I'm thinking of a station...

OK, fair enough, my apologies. But tell me this - do the scotsman and any other fast services run through the station...

There used to be a good few a day, including two CrossCountry trains I think, as well as most EC services that went beyond Edinburgh. However, with the recasts on both routes over recent years, only the 0540 Edinburgh-London does now, every other trains stops. I've always had it down as four platforms, never knew where people got p4 being two from :|.

As for this, Didcot Parkway?

Even if Darlo doesn't have more than four platforms, Didcot Parkway definitely does.

I genuinely did believe Darlo had five or even six until Nym suggested otherwise. I got the answer of four from Wiki after Nym's suggestion - where most, not including me, probably got the idea of five from

Somewhere, not in London
Long Distance Passenger Express

And in service the HSTs tend to terminate on the southern end of the ECML at Leeds.

And there are regular passenger services that run through fast without calling, but most do call at Darlington.

Just the one a day, Monday-Friday only ;)

So was Didcot Parkway correct?

It was not. My post was supposed to indicate that Darlo may not have more than four platforms, but Didcot definitely does have more than four. It has five.

I'll give you all a clue now - this station is *not* electrified.

And the avoiding lines at Didcot are very busy with both passenger and freight

Dundee? Trains to both London and Edinburgh, and Cardiff changing at Brum. And there seems to be an avoiding line though I've no idea of its status

I wouldn't call HSTs a truly common sight in Dundee. There are less than ten a day. Also, note what I said about Darlington's avoider - this station's avoider is not on the same site or visible from the station.

But, seen as this is objective and nothing more, I shall give two other clues to negate Dundee and others:

There are regular services to two of the three capitals, and the train that connects with the other route(s) is also regular, as is/are the connection(s).

All platforms are through platforms - there are no bays.

A little tip with regards to the term "avoider" in this instance:

The Dr Days Chord (or whatever it's called) in Bristol, which runs direct from the GWML to the Parkway route completely skipping Temple Meads, would count. Lines that run immediately next to a station, as with 13/14 at Manchester Piccadilly (if there were no platforms there), would not count.

I can't remember if it's sign posted as such but operationally P4 is used as P4a and P4b. It's not an uncommon sight to have a Northern service held in P4b (south end of the platform) whilst a long distance service is routed past it onto P4a.

This station was originally built as a terminus with an unknown number of platforms
It later became a through station with two platforms
Much later it became a terminus again
It's now a through station with one platform.

Initially I thought Blackpool South, but that doesn't fit all the clues…

East Grinstead?

This is another village whose station has an hourly service to London, but it isn't quite as far from the capital as Upwey. It closed in the 1960s, but reopened in the 1970s, and has since been renamed.

The reopening train was hauled by a class 31, but nowadays the line is electrified.

An easy one:

The majority of services at this station are provided by CrossCountry, but the station is also served regularly by two other TOCs and rarely by a fourth.
