I'm thinking of a station...

Despite only having a single platform, this station has direct services to a number of Britain's major cities. It is served by 3 TOCs.

Nope

The station sees a lot less trains than Cambridge but the ones that do call serve a wider range of destinations.

------

EDIT - Dunbar is correct

This unmanned two platform station serves little more than a small village, but still has an hourly service to London, even though it is over 100 miles away.

It is served by two TOCs and has both diesel and electric services.

It is now the last station before the terminus of the services from London, following clousre of the intermediate halt in the 1980s.

It was a junction until the 1950s, and has been renamed more than once.

Upwey?

Fits everything, except that Upwey isn't a small village, it's a large suburb of Weymouth. The station serves the whole northern half of Weymouth, which is a sizeably large town.

Served by FGW 15xs and SWT 444s. The intermediate halt was Radipole (closed due to health and safety reasons, of all things); the branch was to Abbotsbury.

Upwey is correct.

[It was a small village last time I went there - Weymouth hadn't sprawled that far then !]

Upwey station is actually further south, in Broadwey; my father grew up near it (he was born in 1956) and Weymouth's been at least that big for as long as he can remember.

This station is served by one train an hour in each direction (to and from London), although a couple of years back it was 3tp2h, but the service was sacrificed so the units could work longer distance.

It is the only station in its county not to be served by a certain TOC.

If I told you the number of platforms it would be too easy.

.

There used to be Upwey Wishing Well halt as well, up by the bridge over the road near the Tunnel. There's been a lot of expansion around the area since about the 70's, most of the housing near the station has sprung up, like fungus, since then.

That road no longer exists :P

Well, [pedantic] it does still at the bit that goes under the bridge, it's a slip road up on to the new road now. The bit that went round the hairpin bend & over the top of the tunnel is a cycle path now.[/pedantic]
But I fear this may be digressing.

My question still stands:

Crewkerne? The only station in Somerset not served by FGW?

No can't be - Yeovil Junction is in Somerset as well, though it didn't used to be.

Got confused by my online map showing Milton Keynes UA as a separate county !!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Bletchley? Milton Keynes? Fenny Stratford? Etc.? :P

Good guess though w.r.t. the service level and the platforms.

Surely not Tisbury ?

Only station in Wiltshire not served by FGW
1 platform

Yep you're right. Formerly it used to be 2tph Salisbury, 3tp2h Gillingham, 1tph Yeovil and 1tp2h Exeter; the Gillinghams were cut back to Salisbury to free up 159s so that Exeter could become hourly.

This four platform station has services to two of Great Britain's three constituent capital cities and is only one interchange from the other, which can be managed in quite a few different locations, including Birmingham. It is within commuting range of a major city but is also a commuter hub itself to a lesser degree. Although not used under normal circumstances (by passenger traffic anyway), it is possible to bypass this station using an avoider line. HSTs are a common sight here, none of which terminate.

Somewhere, not in London
Darlington

Direct to London and Edinbrugh

Can get to Cardiff with a change at:
Birmingham New Street
Manchester Piccadilly
Bristol Temple Meads
Bristol Parkway
etc etc.

Commutable to Newcastle and commuted to by the Bishop Auckland line and Tees Valley Line.

HSTs to Edinbrugh and Highlands pass through, very few LDPEs terminate and the ones that do are formed of 91+nMk4+Mk4DVT

1, 2, 3, 4a, 4b (Could class 4 as one..)

And darlo station sits aside the through lines.

OK, fair enough, my apologies. But tell me this - do the scotsman and any other fast services run through the station, or otherwise are the avoiding lines not electrified making such a move impossible in some cases? Also, by "avoiding lines" I did mean they don't share the same site as the station, because otherwise the same could be said of the likes of Burnahm, near Slough, for instance. I must admit though, I thought Darlo had more platforms...

And lastly, if EC HSTs can run Leeds terminators, why not Darlo terminators? Also, please forgive my ignorance, but what exactly would LDPE stand for here?

WsM is definitely not correct. If nothing else, it has too few platforms.
