I'm thinking of a station...

West Coast Mainline
4 platforms
is not in the county it was built in

(hoping it's unique but if not ignore 'new' counties and concentrate on the boundary.)

Leighton Buzzard?

(actually in Linslade - was Buckinghamshire until 1965 then transferred to Bedfordshire)

 right then...

This station sees trains heading as far afield as Cornwall and the North-East of England, but they don't stop there.
It has just two platforms, which have a two trains per hour service in both directions.
The station has 'moved' in its past, once, which then resulted in the closure of the stations either side of it which it replaced.
It used to have three platforms - the third used until the 1970s but since disused. There used to be a triangle junction to one side of the station.

I imagine that it is the cross country service which runs from cornwall to north east england?

Somewhere around Reading would make sense, that has only XC services to Newcastle (the Edinburgh ones are from the South West), and FGW stuff to Cornwall. Now to crack the relocation and triangle elememts...

I apologise - Cornwall was not what I meant to put, it was from a previous one I'd been thinking of...

Here's the revised 'clue':

This station sees trains heading as far afield as the sunny South of England (not the coast) and the North-East of England, but they don't stop there.

Ok, clue:

Less than a mile away from this station you could also find trains going as far as Cornwall and Scotland, but on a line which doesn't pass through this station.

:D

OK, try this one. Hopefully harder than my last pitiful attempt.

Although located on a busy rail line (seeing at least a half hourly train service in both directions), this station has a poor service. Its neighbours to either side see a pitiful two trains a day. However, this station has the luxury of an extra daily train in one direction only.

Nope; good guess, but both its neighbours have three trains a day.

Nope. This station has a marginally better service than those around it. Ackilington's got the same as Widdrington, and much fewer trains than Alnmouth.

I've got Ackilington and Widdrington the wrong way around. I'm guessing its not on the ECML?

Ahh, that would be telling ;)

I won't exclude the ECML, but you're definitely in the wrong place at the moment. You are however, thinking along the right lines.

Monifieth has had that extra train in the past but it doesn't seem to be current

Monifieth was the one I was thinking of. Last time I checked, it had the Carnoustie-Edinburgh and Edinburgh-Carnoustie trains that the others along there do, as well as an extra service to Glasgow Queen Street in the morning (that none of the others along there do). Unfortunately, that has now been removed apparently. I should probably have checked that

paulravuslante got it, though!

Whilst on the theme of poorly served stations I'll jump in with an easy one.

A group of 4 stations - 3 of which have one train a day each way, but the fourth has more than twice as many.

What are they collectively known as?
