As I keep trying to get through to you, there are duties on the GWML, all the way to and from Paddington, contra-peak and off-peak, where a single class 180 can handle the loads, so a 5-car IEP, with another 40 or 50 standard class seats, should also be able to cope and allow for growth in traffic as well.

Is there some specific reason, other than your hatred for IEP, why you can't grasp this basic information?
I grasped that information a while ago. However, I think that:
  1. there is quite a difference between the current fleet of five 180s and arround 40 IC125s and the IEP fleet with 21 9-car and 36 5-car. Arround 40 long sets (not necessarily all nines, depending on how well it is possible to put busy services that need 600 seats into seperate diagrams from slightly quieter ones which need 400-550 seats) and six to eight 5-car sets would seem like a better match.
  2. if, say, 420 passengers are expected on a particular service (let's say beyond Oxford on a Cotswolds service) the choice for the TOC of 9-car, 5-car or 2x5-car is going to be a bit awkward. If they decide to diagram 5-cars for such workings this will not be a good thing in my view.
Another advantage SWT have, alongside corridor connections, is that their 158s/159s come in 2-car and 3-car lengths. That means they can form any length of train from 2-car to 9-car to match demand. The choice of 5 or 10 carriages with IEP on the diesel routes looks rather awkward in comparison. Even adding 9-car bi-modes to the mix wouldn't help matters much, cheaper than running 2x5-car but still a 600-seat train.

Also, I've said before the IEP fleet for Great Western averages out at 6.4 carriages per set. Obviously you can't actually build a 6.4 carriage IEP set but if you could the number of seats would be less than any of GW's current 2+8 IC125s.

No, you quite clearly have not grasped it, otherwise you wouldn't keep going on and on about five-car IEPs.

There are plenty of trains now which are worked by HSTs off-peak and contra-peak which do not need 500-580 seats but the HSTs are used because that's the stock available - eg Gloucester/Cheltenham - and if you seriously think that with three or four IEPs per hour to Bristol stations, plus Parkway calls by South Wales services, that you would need 600-plus seats on each and every service to/from Bristol, you must be out of your mind.

If, say 420 passengers are expected on a Cotswold Line service beyond Oxford - and funnily enough FGW do have staff whose job it is to look at loadings and work out what stock is appropriate for particular services - then they will put on a 2x5 set, especially as such a service would need more than 500 seats between London, Reading and Oxford. Nothing awkward about it all.

This is a route where the peak train loadings require HSTs now, while the off-peak/contra-peak ones work perfectly well with a 180 or Turbo (even if the accommodation on the latter is less satisfactory). Boring old facts, that will not fundamentally be altered by the arrival of IEP.

With 2x5 car you can serve the same destinations more frequently.

2x5 car to Cardiff half hourly with one half continuing to Swansea (doubled frequency for Swansea) maybe even the whole train to Swansea with half continuing further

2x5 car to Bristol half hourly with one half continuing to westonsupermare hourly (half hourly in peaks, great increase in London to Weston)

2x5 car to Exeter or Plymouth half hourly with one half continuing to Penzance or elsewhere.

If you are just turning back portions earlier you throw away pretty much all the important justifications for having split sets.

By the time you have finished screwing around getting the set detached at Cardiff you can be ten miles down range on route to Swansea.
The numbers of vehicles you save is rather minor once you include the fact that you end up with ten vehicles on the Cardiff-London section instead of 9.

Then add the increased staffing costs, increased journey times and your advantage withers away.

As to continuing beyond Swansea.... there is nowhere to go beyond Swansea that is worth going to.

GW don't even have to order full sets, they could just order more coaches which can be added to an existing 5 coach set to make it a nine coach set, half of these "new" 9 coach sets could even be bi-modal without needing to increase the number of engines ordered.

As each 5 coach bi-modal has 3 engines, meaning that for every 2 you lengthen there are 6 engines. One would go in the electric version and the remaining 5 would be required for the bi-modal version.

Lengthen just 6 sets (24 coaches) and you could run 27 x 9 coach sets (3 of which were bi-modal), 6 x 5 coach sets and 12 x doubled up 5 coach sets. That would then be 39 full length sets rather than 40 HST's.

Which given that:
- some existing services run by HST's would be fine being run as a five coach set
- IEP would be more reliable (and therefore in service more) compared to the HST's so less of them are needed
- we don't know what EMU's GW will be having so they may run some services with these rather than with IEP's whilst they are currently run by HST's

it means that there could well be an abundance of IEP's.

Even if there are no extra sets or coaches are ordered the maximum number of services which not be able to run as full length sets would be 7 (assuming all HST's and 180's are available at one time), but given the above and that because of the class 180's being a micro fleet (meaning that just one out of service is 20% of the fleet out of action), it is unlikely to be a problem.

That depends. Apart from summer-only trains to Tenby (which couldn't be IEP worked anyway) and perhaps a commuting peak working to and from Carmarthen there is nowhere beyond Swansea that it is worth an INTERCITY train going to, and then only for capacity reasons.

That's another problem, if you lengthen the 5-car sets after they are built you end up with a few more trains than you need because you can't easily convert driving vehicles to intermediate coaches. They need to forget running in multiple and work out how many trains they need in each length to meet demand and the proposed frequency.

I agree, although to get around some of the problems raise by HSTEd you could do some of the following:

Run some services to Bristol Parkway where one portion runs onto Swansea even and the other to Weston-Super-Mare.

Run some services to Swindon where one portion runs onto Gloucester and the other to Bristol TM via Bath.

Run some services to Oxford where one potion runs to Worcester and the other to Banbury.

The draft timetable used in the DfT document to determine the Great Western IEP order size that was posted on this website, if I remember correctly, had the following Wales-Paddington Off-peak service:
  • Cardiff-Paddington
    • 2tph
    • Stops seemed similar to the present hourly service
    • 9-car Electric
  • Swansea-Paddington
    • 1tph
    • Non-stop between Newport and Reading
    • 5-car Bimode

There has no joining and splitting off-peak and the use of 5-car Bimode sets on the Swansea service is probably the justification for such a fast service whilst maintaining 2tph between Cardiff and Paddington with the current stops.

The Swansea services could run in 5+5 formation when in the morning peak and leave one 5-car set in London which would later be used to lengthen a West Bound afternoon peak service.

Why would we need to do that exactly? Explain in what situation we would need to convert driving vehicles into intermediate coaches??? Please explain.

You have a 5 car bi-mode. buy 4 carriages it becomes 9 car? How has that required any carriage conversion?

That services takes over a previously doubled up 5 car and you release 1 5 car train, for use elsewhere.

I know, I was just replying to the above concept about turning back early.

The Swansea services could run in 5+5 formation when in the morning peak and leave one 5-car set in London which would later be used to lengthen a West Bound afternoon peak service.

Leaving a set in Paddington is going to fill up half a valuable platform for most of the day.
Moving it to sidings is going to take additional staff and movements across the station throat.
Better to simply leave it in service the entire day, or to use clever set assignments so a 9-car can work the peak service.

Both LM (Northampton) and DB (various places) do this successfully why can't IEP be used in this way?

LM Northampton stock loses essentially nothing from working in multiple.
The units all have gangways (Well 350s do anyway and I believe those are the bulk of such services) and have no need for 8m of the leading vehicle to be removed from the passenger available space.

This reduces the problems, although AIUI it remains a 'niche' operation with most LM splits being to serve two seperate destinations.

As to DB, they operate an entirely different railway in an entirely different environment with far less heavily stressed rolling stock and infrastructure.
They have plenty of spares so running additional vehicles in a formaiton is not a problem and they have no problems with overly short platforms.

Quite, I thought I was quite clear that this was what I was suggesting. In that I was saying that GW wouldn't need to order sets just extra coaches.

It even provides Rhydgaled with his much desired longer than 5 coach bi-modal train!

DB are usually short of ICE sets so if anything breaks down, expect an IC. Plus there are regular 'ICE' services that have to be run by Metropolitan sets due to lack of available ICEs

The last bit (bolded) answers your question. If you just lengthen 5-car sets, you will no longer be running them in multiple. Given that enough 5-car sets have been ordered for some (but not all) to run in multiple, you will end up with some spare units that you no longer need to cover the service. To lengthen sets to cover the same services with the minimum of extra vehicles (avoiding surplus units) you would need to convert the driving vehicles.

Exactly, portion working with units like 350s and 158s is a whole different thing to doing it with 125mph INTERCITY stock. The former makes sense, the latter is extremely messy. Even without the crumple zones, I don't think portion working should be used with 165s, 150/1s etc. without gangways.

The IEPs don't necessarily have to stay on the GWML/ECML for their entire lives so if we did extend half the 5-cars to 9 or 10, the remaining 5-car sets could be used on other routes such as CrossCountry, or as fast regional units for Scotland or for fast TransPennine runs (after most of the local passengers move onto the longer local electric trains and won't clog up TPX workings). Especially post-HS2 there may be plenty of routes which will not require a 9-car IEP but would still be able to take advantage of the bi-mode and 225km/h capability such as Liverpool-York or Liverpool-Norwich.

Portion working isn't the end of the world on InterCity. It's a compromise but it's certainly not as bad a solution as the alternative, which is to run only 600 seat 9 car IEPs which would then be uneconomical to extend further past Edinburgh or Cardiff or wherever as they do today.

They wouldn't use thier 125/140mph capability much on Liverpool-York or Liverpool-Norwich, and the former probably won't need a diesel mode much longer either. CrossCountry sounds like a good idea when the Voyagers are finished, but how long do we have to wait for that? And TPE will have new EMUs (should be a 442/444-alike in my opinion, so 5-car without the crumple zones of an IEP) by then also.

The trouble with that is it relies on there being diagrams which can cope as 7 coaches throughout the day.

If all trains run as a single set throughout, the GW IEP fleet would need to cover around 43 diagrams. I think 50 diagrams have been ordered which leaves 7 diagrammed 5-car sets for strengthening others. The number of diagramed vehicles ordered for GW I think is 322. 43 9-car diagrams would be 387 vehicles, an increase of 65. BUT if you lengthen the 25 5-car sets to 9-car and release the 7 5-car sets elsewhere you need 100 additional vehicles, becuause the 7x5 are then lost to the GW fleet.

If you can find 11 out of the 43 diagrams which require a maximum of 7 coaches you then have 32x9 + 11x7 = 365 which is just 22 diagramed vehicles more than are already ordered.

It depends on what hapens with the GW services to to Plymouth and/or Cornwall, as it is likely that more sets would be required for them if they start being run by IEP.

Of course there may also be enough pasesnger growth to justify more of the sets to be run as full length for the whole of their routes amd/or needing more sets for a more frequent service on some routes.

You've been told why it won't be any such thing on TPE - a 450-alike perhaps. And now crumple zones are evil are they? So on the one hand you want a end-door coach with everything lining up with the windows, on the other you want to pack 'em in by getting rid of the crumple zone - which on a Class 180, to name but one example and excluding the cab, is rather small and used for bike storage and would provide all of eight more seats. Never mind it's a safety requirement for 125mph running.

The extensions beyond Edinburgh and Cardiff are full-length trains today, hourly to Swansea with 2+8 IC125s and 5 per day north of Edinburgh with 2+9 IC125s. Thus, I think those examples are not ones where 9-car would be uneconomical, but I get your drift.

Routes where again those full-length sets happen to be the trains available to the operator. Their use does not necessarily reflect the loadings, same as HSTs on off-peak Cheltenham trains now, or the off-peak weekday Cotswold Line HSTs, to and from Hereford, where an HST-size train is only needed east of Oxford.

No, you just have the problem of lugging around a half-empty train much of the day if you use nine cars, wasting energy, which is something you used to go on about a great deal. The trouble with your idea is that it would completely remove the ability to couple and uncouple trains to reflect variations in demand and would produce seven-car trains that were too big for lots of jobs, which won't need 450 seats, and too small for lots of others, which will need more than 450.

It's not a diagramming problem, it's a meeting demand sensibly problem, which is why when FGW replaced 180s with HSTs on the Cotswold Line in 2008-9, they soon changed their mind and brought back 166s for want of anything else, as 500-seat HSTs were patently obviously not a sensible train to use outside the peaks. And why, when they got some 180s back, they put them on the Cotswold Line again, as they are appropriate for the demand on services they work, with one exception.

And on the subject of meeting demand sensibly, you were told the following about the impact of the increased service frequency with IEP on capacity between London and Bristol on another forum last September, or have you forgotten/ignored this as well. Even with evil five-car sets in the mix:

Working to the current IEP information (draft weekday timetable, draft seating capacity) in the public domain, Bristol TM-Paddington may have:

6x double 5 car services: 3780 seats
14x 5 car services: 4410 seats
40x 9 car services: 25080 seats
Total: 33270 seats

Looking at current Bristol TM-Paddington HST provision there are a maximum of 34 weekday services and if we assume they are all operated by 2+8 high density sets with micro buffets, then there are 34x 560 seats.
Total: 19040 seats

So if we were to replace the 5-car sets with yet more nine cars in your ideal world, there would be about 37,600 seats available each day, almost double the current capacity - never mind that the projection based on DfT's timetable is a huge leap in capacity anyway. Similarly, from Oxford, if there are 3 IEPS an hour, plus assorted 100mph-plus emus, there will also be a huge leap in capacity there, same as an hourly 5-car IEP to/from Cheltenham and Gloucester tots up to rather more capacity than an HST every couple of hours.

That stuff about Bristol illustrates that there will be a massive increase in capacity - but the demand that capacity will meet is not evenly distributed across all services, all day, so you do not need nine-car trains all day - same as it is now, but the only stock FGW has at the moment is full-length HSTs, so that's what they use.

Turning back early? A meaningless expression. If you want more capacity you, er, buy more coaches, which is what has happened with Pendolinos or 333s in West Yorkshire - unless those cases are in some way different to buying more IEP coaches.

You don't need platform extensions, the trains will have SDO and operating paired up will stop with part of each set on shorter platforms, whatever length the sets are, as was pointed out some months ago.

I do love all this stuff about coupling short trains. What is it that you and Rhydgaled know that train operators the world over have clearly failed to grasp, so they persist in doing it, day in, day out?

We should really have one thread for the facts about IEP and another for Rhydgaled's various justifications for why IEP cannot work (too late now, I appreciate).

If those services were not viable they simply wouldn't be run

Plenty of services run that aren't economically viable. See Arriva Trains Wales/ Northern etc.

Well beyond all the waffle I don't see an issue with paired and portion working, It allows capacity to be matched to demand, it may well allow a better service on off wire destinations which currently only have a token service as lugging an 8 or 9 carriage train to these places is not really justified.

In fact I believe IEP will revolutionise Intercity services on the East Coast and Great Western in a similar way to the HST's did in the 70's.

And that's the point we are still running a 1970's Intercity today not a 21st century one.

Judging by some of the recent comments, there are still some people who appear to be still in the 1970's.

That stuff about Bristol illustrates that there will be a massive increase in capacity - but the demand that capacity will meet is not evenly distributed across all services, all day, so you do not need nine-car trains all day - same as it is now, but the only stock FGW has at the moment is full-length HSTs, so that's what they use.

Well they don't just have full length HSTs, but I will accept the argument so I can move on.
The 'massive increase in capacity' will likely be swamped within a few years, so there is nothing to expect that this capacity will even be sufficient a few years from now.
The lessons of history show that reduction in journey times produce enormous increases in patronage, so DfT is probably conservative in the long run.

Even with Sprinters it takes something like ten minutes with the appropriate padding to split a train.
I certainly wouldn't want to a joining in anything less than that with how troublesome modern trains are.
You also really have to have someone walk through the second unit and make sure everyone is off. So ten minutes each way.

The second point is that 'balancing capacity against demand' is often pursued as if it were an end in and of itself, the actual objective is ensuring that farebox recovery is as high as it is possible for it to be.

Let us take the Oxford example, a train will cover the first leg of the journey in roughly an hour, and then the onward journey to Worcester (according to the Franchise Replacement spec for consulation this would be the normal terminating point - no idea if that has changed since) in roughly 1hr20 more.
This means that (with a customary 20 minute turnaround and cleaning time) the cycle time for each of those diagrams is something approaching 2:40 in the first place and 5:20 in the second case.


If we take the twin 5-car option then will require 6 sets to main 1tph on whole diagram and 3 more for the strengthening section.
Taking us to 45 vehicles.

If we take an alternative 9-car option which would offer comparable numbers of seats that is six sets or 54 vehicles.

So all running the through train has cost us is a set of 9 vehicles. Which requires a hire charge (all up) [assuming that figure of £180,000/month for 5 is still accurate] of roughly £324,000 a month.

Since the costs of running a train scale incredibly non linearly with length, the cost of running a train that you already have boils down to a marginal maintenence charge and the cost of fuel. This would be accounted for in the costs of ~£324,000/month alongside the capital costs.

Now we have to account for the operational savings of the unit train:
It is likely that each 5-car set would need a catering crew of roughly 3 staff members (one first class host and one in standard - indeed FHT seem to run with this settup), a quick search on First Group's website seems to put the starting salary of a catering team member at roughly ~£16,500; including Employer NI it probably puts it up in the region of ~£17,000.
So one three-person crew requires a cost of ~£51,000/yr, you will then need roughly three crews to be able to assume one sets diagrams are always covered, taking us to ~£153,000/yr - some £12,750 per month.

Having a split set will require three additional catering/CS crews, taking us to £38,250/month in costs.

That reduces the additional costs of through trains to roughly £285,750/month.

Next, we have additional staff at Oxford, it is likely you will require at least one shunter to handle movements with the second sets, since a set just detached from a Country-bound service will be on the wrong side of the station to be coupled to a City-bound one, and using a shunter reduces the number of conflicting movements from two (crossing ove the station twice) to one (the shunt move).
I have no idea what a shunter is paid, but the starting salary for a driver (and it might be a driver for ease of diagramming?) would cost roughly £45,000yr, which after multiplying by three to get 100% coverage gives us roughly £11,250 a month.

That reduces the costs of the through trains to roughly £274,500/month.

There will be approximately 16 trains running between Worcester and London each day, taking us to ~£600 in additional costs per train.
That gets us 4 vehicles with a seating capacity of 312 seats.

So the marginal cost of providing the additional 312 seats is roughly £2 each return.
Considering that the fare between Worcester and Oxford is currently £29.90 [return] that implies that if you could fill the trains with a fare of roughly £16 return you would be better off, and even if you can't you would not be that much worse off.

If you have unlimited capacity filling it almost certainly isn't hard since you can slash fares as required.

Noone in Britain has ever designed such IC trainsets to be operated in this manner, even Virgin only resorted to it out of desperation when Operation Princess fell to pieces.

Just to add, whilst the problem of extending 5 car units will be an issue where they need to be doubled up, but let's not forget there is the option also of cascading future spare 800/801 units to other lines, so for example you may get ten five car units extended 2yrs into the contract to 9/10 cars, leaving ten 800/801 five car units to cascade elsewhere. Given the 800/801 fleet spec specifically outlines easy splitting of formed units, there's options for creating a mixed length fleet for elsewhere, so you could end up with a mix of 4, 5, 6 or 7 car units cascaded to XC, MML or indeed as spoke services linking with the HS2 network whenever that opens. The key is flexibility, just because 9 & 5 car units are being ordered, doesn't mean they will stay like this - it's also entirely possible that the 800/801 fleet enter service in different formations to what's currently planned, for example 4+6 car units, 10 car units working peak times vs 8 car units servicing less busy just outside peak services, a lot will depend on future franchise agreements.

The last bit (bolded) answers your question. If you just lengthen 5-car sets, you will no longer be running them in multiple. Given that enough 5-car sets have been ordered for some (but not all) to run in multiple, you will end up with some spare units that you no longer need to cover the service. To lengthen sets to cover the same services with the minimum of extra vehicles (avoiding surplus units) you would need to convert the driving vehicles.

You literally make me want to throw the laptop out of the window.

Why would anyone extend ALL the sets if some would be useless, you would extend the ones you need to!!!!

None of which has anything to do with the numbers of passengers likely to be on board trains west of Oxford most of the day. So clearly we're still not going to get a clear, coherent answer as to why we should send 600-seat trains up and down half-empty all day.

If you think IEP will be dawdling along for 1hr 20 minutes to Worcester, think again, better acceleration, enhanced speed limits, power doors, etc. A 180 given its head can manage the run, inclusive of seven station stops, in about 65 minutes now. Cleaning time? FGW have travelling cleaners and have done for years, 180s were turning round at Worcester in 10 minutes years ago, etc...

I won't bother repeating the back of a fag packet calculations to save space.

Where do you get this stuff about crewing? When Turbos join/split at Oxford, the only catering is in the set running to/from the Cotswolds, on the basis that London-Oxford passengers on a sub one-hour journey are rather less likely to want to buy anything or bought before boarding. So zero catering crew in that set. First class host? Well right now the 17.50 to Worcester only has one as far as Oxford, to take but one example. There is zero catering on London-Oxford only HSTs, unless a Rail Gourmet trolley is hopping a ride on one.

What additional staff? There is a team of shunter drivers at Oxford now. Some of the splits/joins are handled by a driver waiting to take the train forward anyway. And with island platforms to operate from at Oxford in the future, you won't be shunting stock across the station layout anyway.

Think you'll find there will be more than 16 trains a day. There are 16 London-bound now. Then throw in trains to fill the gaps to make up a full hourly IEP service, or trains turning back at Moreton-in-Marsh... Time to get out the fag packet again.

You can have all the capacity you like but if people don't want/need to make the journey, then they won't. There's lots of spare capacity on current services, operated by smaller trains. There is no need whatever for trains with 600 seats outside the peaks.

Why would you need crossovers? When you arrive at Oxford/Swindon, the front set goes forward. When you join trains, the one from the west couples to a set sitting in the platform. This method of operation has worked with Turbos for 20 years at Oxford. And if you are going to spend money on crossovers, they allow another train to use part of the platform and get past the set that is waiting. Though with a well-organised timetable, such a wait is not going to be very long anyway.

Will they all have kitchens? They are still draft layouts. Not all of FGW HSTs have kitchens now, do they? Or is this another crime against passengers that must be rectified forthwith? FGW's Class 180s seem to get by quite nicely at the moment with one person from Rail Gourmet and a trolley, not three.

Where do you get this idea from? You could just buy some extra trailer cars, as was done with Pendolinos and the 333s. Yes, the only realistic constraint on train length is going to be the distance between the buffer stops at Paddington and the starting signals at the end of the platforms. Though if you rebuild the station throat then that may no longer be an issue. And even without that, there's nothing to stop you lengthening nine-car sets to 10 for starters. But since no-one has any idea at the moment if the trains will need lengthening in the future, then it's a complete red herring anyway, closely related to all your molehills.

What Thameslink has done is plan for an entirely new mode of operating through the core central London section, to handle ever-increasing numbers of commuters in a manner more akin to the London Underground, a mode of operating that has nothing to do with operating intercity or inter-regional services with portions in this country or abroad, which happens all the time, day in, day out, and is simply not the problem that you and you know who persist in making it out to be, because, quite simply, you still dislike the whole idea of IEP.
