I doubt many trains have been withdrawn since 2005

There have been some new deliveries of trains since 2005, such as TPE class 185, London Overground class 378 and London Midland class 172s. However, these have been used directly and indirectly to bolster services across the network.

It seems that few trains have been withdrawn since class 421, 422 and 423 stock by the end of 2005. Maybe just a few class 142 and 508 stock.

If there have been many other withdrawals recently feel free to report these, although I can't think of many.

SWT's last 421s (the Lymington ones) were withdrawn in 2010.

The ex-SE 508s were withdrawn about the same time and have mostly been scrapped.

Has ATW's class 121 bubble car technically been withdrawn? If so its probably the most recent withdrawal.

Despite being so badly damaged in 2002, I don't think that 365526 was actually withdrawn until after 2005. That's the only one I can think of after 390033.

Aye it took them quite some time to get on with scrapping it, it was always listed as stored at Crewe Works in all my years of being into the railways, so I'd say it was counted as withdrawn by at least September 2003.

Can't remember when it was scrapped, but a group of us including myself observed it (just about!) at the Crewe Works open day in September 2005, but it was still some time after that before it was all gone.

313121 hasn't been withdrawn, but it has been withdrawn from passenger service now since it was displaced by the 378s. Also ex-Silverlink 508s, 301-303 have also been withdrawn as well as the Southeastern units.

Quite, the 508/2s and 508/3s are pretty much all scrapped now aren't they? Was glad to be honest to read that news, I could take out a significant number of EMUs on my EMUs Required for Haulage list. Not that it lasted long, had to add for the new 350s and 377s!

313121 was taken into NR use, surprisingly they didn't remember it. So withdrawn in a sense, but not at all in another.

Of course, at one point the 314s were going to be withdrawn (around 2004 or 2005 I believe) then that got pushed back to 2006 IIRC, obviously something changed and they're well past those dark days.

Can't think of anything else that came quite close to withdrawal but kept carrying on in recent years than the 314s.

Moving away from passenger stock, there's also the 66 that went 'rambling' on the banks of Loch Trieg.

Oh, and the DBS one that's still OOU and unlikely to return after falling off the Highland Main Line.

66732 and 66048 respectively there IIRC. The former was only fairly recently scrapped too, after being stuck down there for ages on end.

Was still at Wolverton when I went on a visit there two years ago.
Photography was strictly prohibited of this unit.

It was 66734 that was scrapped.... 66732 is still in regular mainline use.
Also there is the Freightliner 66 that was scrapped after a major collision.... 66521 if memory serves me right.

Oops, you are correct, I had 734 in my head before typing but I must have been distracted by the music I was playing

66521 for the Freightliner one is correct.

David Goddard: Oh right, I was of the belief I'd read it had been scrapped sometime in the last couple of years, but I could be mistaken.

Only really A Stock and C Stock has actually been scrapped recently; a lot of the 1967TS that was in good nick is in cold store. (Corrosion was hardly an issue on 67TS)

But technically they have been withdrawn. It's looking to be a similar fate for the poor D stock - vacation at Eastleigh

There may be some things in the works to extend their use (especially the double enders), but one doesn't make the decisions...

its hard to see what if anything might be cut up before 2020. With growth predicted to keep going it would be a brave politician who sent units to the scrapyard whilst overcrowding gets worse. I can even see some sort of grandfather rights coming into place in 2020 or units that arent DDA compliant to allow continued use.

The freight operators seemed to have twigged that demand is going to increase and that they need to grab motive power whilst they can. The never ending procession of freight locos going for scrap has stopped and has even reversed with scrapyards emptying of usable assets and classes which were thought to have been redundant now having a future.

Over the next few years there will be a tidying up of fleets and sidings will empty of old wagons as they are cut up. A few spare coaches might also go and some spares donors for the rejuvination of the freight loco fleets but there will be thin pickings for the scrapyards.

Didn't DBS withdraw their last 37s about 3-4 years ago (shortly after one was re-painted into DBS colours)? What happened to them?

Their last 37s, will have been the Class 37/4s (419 was painted into DBS Red), which were all sold to DRS. 37402/405/419/425 have been returned back to traffic, 37401/422 are undergoing restoration, and 37406/410/411/416/417/426/427 were scrapped.
The other DBS Red Class 37, 37670, is now owned by DRS, and stored at Derby RTC (it is still Red). The only other 37 I can think of that DBS kept till (near) the end was 37669, which was sold to West Coast Railway Company (which is now Maroon, and at Barrow Hill for restoration). There was also the ex-Spanish (Continental Rail) 37s, of which 703/714/716/718 are owned by DRS (714 is a shunter at Daventry), and 800/884 are owned by Europhoenix and should eventually be hired to Colas Rail.

I knew about London Underground stock withdrawn. As regards national rail, the lines upgraded are the most interesting namely Lymington, Cardiff and - I believe - Redhill-Tonbridge now class 377 ex-class 508. I've heard a rumour that, with the anticipated continuing upsurge in rail travel, few if any major fleet withdrawals will occur before 2020. I still intend to ride a Southern class 313 before 2015 in case they are withdrawn as part of the 377/6/7 introduction and merger with next Thameslink franchise.

Why? ROSCOs like them cos they cost nearly nothing to buy and have provided a good source of income while at the same time they are far cheaper to lease for the TOCs than new trains would be

Because passengers and crews despise them for endless reasons. They are the lowliest trains in existance.
