My suspicion is these will get replaced with HSTs and/or IEPs in the mid-term. They could then be moved on to other operators to replace Sprinters or (if they've any left, heaven forbid) Pacers.

Imagine how much better Northern Rail would be if the Pacers were displaced. Or even if Transpennine Express' services were strengthened with HSTs or even Voyagers.

Anyone else think this is a good idea or is this just me!?

EMT took one carrige and put it in a different set, where as you are talking about rebuilding the nose and putting a corridor connection in. Which then also may mean that they have to get completely new noses if Branson dosent want them to be rebuilt with that nose.

Why rebuild the nose? Why not just have less, longer sets instead of coupling two together?

Request more Pendos for Virgin, cascade the Voyagers and reconfigure.

Because you would have units made of two driving cars with no trailers if they were inserted into other units to lengthen them.

Erm... who said anything about two driving car units? They can be reconfigured, the numbers for each set need to be carefully picked. Ofcourse it will reduce their total number of rolling stock but increase capacity.

Capacity stays the same if the number of carriages stays the same. All you are suggesting is to lengten some units and shorten others without any thought going into it. Which services are you suggesting to be run by 2 and 3 car units which currently enjoy 4 or 5?

because by taking trailers and putting them in other sets to make longer sets, you would have less sets because you'd have loads of driving carridges left over!

Point taken. I'm just being silly. EMT had different length sets unlike the Voyagers i assume?

I'd personally like 2 car voyagers...

Yes, EMT had 9 car and 4 car trains which were made into a fleet of 7 and 5 cars.

I think originally it was 16x4 car and 7x9car giving a total of 127 vehicles. It is now 6x7 car and 17x5 car also giving a total of 127 vehicles.

i know about the dreaded (well i am) HST replacement scheme starting in a couple of years or so,when the IEP will be taking its place, why couldnt they build like an updated version of the HST?
and whats annoying me more is that the goverment is going to adventurely electrify everywhere, which is going to spoil everything,EMU this EMU that, and the goverment think this is eco frienly but do they know where the electric comes from,?soon there will be few DMU's in the future, just EMUs,and this spoils it for us train enthusiast, because those who love diesal will be disapointed and those who like electric will be disapointed, why?electric lovers will soon turn off of electric because it'll be everywhere and diesal lovers will be 10 time annoyed because in the future there will be no diesal maybe except freight, and preservation,im not saying this is in a couple or years or so but the future like 2050 or somthing, but this is my idea of how things will turn out so make the most of what you got now

There's no way everywhere can be electrified, it's just not cost efficient to do that. So your beloved diesels are here to stay :D although which ones will stay is anyones guess

Yes they do know where it comes from, but the electricity for electric trains can be generated from other sources; once diesel runs out or becomes prohibitively expensive, diesel trains become essentially useless.

soon there will be few DMU's in the future, just EMUs,and this spoils it for us train enthusiast
So? The railways aren't run for enthusiasts, they're run for the people who travel on them; the majority of who aren't at all interesteed in what they're travelling on, just that it gets them where they need to go.

because those who love diesal will be disapointed and those who like electric will be disapointed, why?electric lovers will soon turn off of electric because it'll be everywhere and diesal lovers will be 10 time annoyed because in the future there will be no diesal maybe except freight, and preservation
If people who like electric will stop liking them when there are loads of electric trains, why did people like steam when it was everywhere? Why do people like diesel in areas where they only get diesel trains currently? What about in most of America, where it's all diesel, they haven't gone off diesel trains.

im not saying this is in a couple or years or so but the future like 2050 or somthing, but this is my idea of how things will turn out so make the most of what you got now
I really don't see the point you're making at all. Things move on and times change. We cannot keep running trains forever on what is a finite power source. If we use electric trains, as the power sources become cleaner, so do the train themselves. And if diesel becomes extremely expensive if oil prices go up again, electric trains won't be affected as much as diesel ones are.

Belive me if that whole of the uk was electrified I would not even give a type 3,4,5 a look and just stick to my AL's thank you very much.

This is, quite simply, the least the important thing to consider when it comes to electrification/train replacement etc. There would be massive operational benefits to the passenger railway from a electric system running a single class of intercity EMU, a single class of regional EMU, a single class of commuter/suburban EMU, a single class of "local" EMU and a single class of "metro" EMU. Even better, these could all be based of the same basic bodyshell and electrical systems.

It won't happen- money prevents replacing the whole fleet that widely and quickly- and if the design was poor we'd be really stuffed, but the boredom of spotters would not be a reason not to do that.

I hope that one of those places that doesn't get electrified is the Scottish Highlands. Those damned canopy's would just ruin the beauty of the highlands if there was a railway nearby!

Not true at all.
The OHLE is really hardly noticeable from even a fairly short distance away.

Everyone uses this excuse for on the train. And that's fair enough being on the train. You barely notice it. But the scenery around the train it would ruin it. Maybe not for rail passengers, but for locals, ramblers and visitors. Imagine putting wires here:
harrypottertrain.jpg

They would undoubtedly ruin that beautiful scene.

I wouldn't electrify the Far North or West Highlands for that reason alone; if we can keep diesels on there or get new trains that don't need OHLE they'd probably be fine.

Yeah, it's a shame we can't revert to 3rd rail. While battery powered vehicles work on tramways & whatnot with really short distances between stations/'power-up' points, on 'full' railways it doesn't seem so easy. :(

I bet someone claimed putting a viaduct across that glen would "ruin it".

If we stumped up the cash, and got the Swiss to do it, I reckon it could be done well. And remember, we're talking about a low speed single track line- not the vast amount of knitting required for a four track high speed mainline.

OHLE on rail lines looks horrendous in this country - but I'm sure with a little effort and cash it could be done respectfully. Make 'em look more like lamp posts, that seems to work!

HST's-Past, Present or Future?

Hopefuly, all hst's will be in the scrap yard soon.:D

So my answer is: PAST
No way do we want HST's in the future and we don't really want them now
Long live the Voyager!

the voyager is all very good except when it comes to peak.
a hst with 7/8 coaches holds so much more than your 5 car voyager
that's why xc have brought them back.

Yeah right, that's why the HSTs have a huge following around the country...

Reminds me of a Private Lines cartoon from entrain a few years ago of Meridians in storage sidings as a HST storms past:

"When I grow up, I want to be a HST"

:p
