HST specifications

hi im new to the site,can anyone tell me the horsepower of an hst (intercity 125) and what litre the engine would be,many thanks

Got the impression MTUs were 65 litres and Valentas were around 80 :?

12L sounds more realistic though :lol:

Paxman Valenta 12RP200L engines still power a signifcant proportion of the fleet. Rated to 2,250hp, although I am of the belief that there may have been some uprated to 2,700hp when GNER went up to 9-car HSTs. I don't have anything to confirm whether they did that or not mind.

Right, here's some specifications. Ta NREA.

Maximum Tractive Effort: 17,980lbf
Wheel Diameter: 1,020mm

(not as many useful figures as I hoped)

Other engine types used are of course Paxman VP185 and MTU 16V4000 (the latter of course now features in all of FGW's power cars).

The fuel tanks capacity is not mentioned, but I am informed a power car's tank needs refuelling after 1,100 miles. So you can imagine it can carry a LOT of fuel!

That's a lot of fuel. I could fill my Leyland Fleetline up nearly 23 times with that much, but then that's *only* got an 11.1l, 150hp engine. Most cars you'd probably be able to get 100 fills or even more from one HST. Also, at current forecourt diesel prices, thats nearly £5000 for one fill, bet you'd get some loyalty card points for that, and then there is the other powercar to fill aswell. Of cource, the TOCs won't pay anything like that much. Of cource though, for a large airliner, 4,680lit wouldn't even be the reserve fuel, actually, a 747 doesn't use much less than that taxying before and after the flight.

- Cylinder configurations: V12 and V18
- Power output: 2610 kWb (3,500 bhp) to 4000 kWb (5,362 bhp) at 1950 rpm.

The MTU engines are currently restricted to 2,200hp rather than the full 2,700hp that they are capable of because of limitations of the HST Powercar electrical systems. That's the case on the GNER/NXEC MTU sets anyway. I presume a complete redesign and rewiring of PC will be required to reach maximum horsepower but presumably would be quite costly.

Valenta=79litres cubic capacity 12cylinders in 60% V form

12VP185=65litres cubic capacity 12 cylinders in 90% V form

16V4000R41= 65litres cubic capacity 16 cylinders in 90% V form




All 3 are rated at 2250hp although all are capable of alot more in marine and some industrial app's.

All are turbo charged and intercooled with the VP being the most Sophisticated with 2-stage turbocharging and being intercooled and aftercooled;)

Nope none were uprated i'm afraid;)

Cheers Kestrel. Wasn't sure but I had a sneaky suspision none were up-rated. Shows how powerful the HSTs are if they didn't need uprating to cope with the weight of an extra coach.

The power cars on the first batch of 2+7 sets supplied to the Western Region in 1976 were rated at 2,250 bhp although the electric transmission was originally designed for 2,500 bhp rated Valentas to take account of the planned introduction of the 2+8 sets for the East Coast main line in 1978.However early problems with the engines and better than forecast power car aerodynamics meant that all "Valenta" power cars were rated at 2,250 bhp.
A few power were experimentally re-engined with 2,400 bhp Mirlees/Blackstone engines for a short period but there were electrical problems and they were eventually replaced by derated 2,250 bhp engines.I dont whether HST power cars could still take the full 2500 bhp.

Wrong, there's alot of confusion over this!

All production power cars/locomotives for the HST's were rated at 2250hp thats engine and electrical capabilities for both GWML and ECML sets.

It was the PROTOTYPE power cars that were electrically rated at 2500hp originally the cars were designed to take the 16RP200L for 2+8 work but they were never fitted, if you look in the prototype engine room you will see the space between engine and cooler group which is much larger than the production types, this was to accommodate the larger engine.

The Mirrless were indeed rated at 2400hp if you managed to get a pair on a set they went like a rocket!!
