I'm sure others will know better, but the original plan had Euston tunnelling complete by the end of 2025, after an 18-month drive starting in early 2024.
This was independent of the station plan for Euston itself, and tied in with the station plan at OOC.
The logistics tunnel is supposed to be complete by the end of 2023, allowing the Euston TBMs to be assembled and launched soon after.
We'll just have to see what the new tunnelling schedule is.
As I understand it, the cost of tunnelling is largely driven by the skilled resource needed for the TBM teams - at least 60 people per TBM (3 shifts of 15 plus spares).
I can well understand HS2 needing to optimise those costs by reducing the number of TBMs in use simultaneously.
For example, it is looking increasingly likely that the Chiltern tunnels will complete before the Euston tunnels need to start.
If the Chiltern crews could then transfer to the Euston job, it would generate a major cost saving.
