Only on this forum have I ever read so much blame being placed on passengers, it’s like some on here just can’t accept the railway gets things wrong

Exactly this. The passengers aren't going to know the train will derail and they won't be able to retrieve their belongings, we can't expect them to think ahead on that. It annoys me that some people don't think the passengers have the right to complain about their belongings being lost permanently to the system.

One would hope a small team of people could be dedicated to getting the belongings and returning them.
I’d like to think that’s being prioritised. At the latest as soon as any carriage is upright.

Sadly I suspect that if a VIPs belongings had been left on the train someone would have decided it wasn’t too risky to go and get them…

hopefully quickly to be re-united with their owners!

Actually in fairness to BTP - a contact of mine had a bag stolen from an LNER train a few years ago - he didn't even report it just wrote it off and I don't think there were high value items in it - but BTP found a bag thief and a house with lots of bags in it including the person's I knew. His bag didn't have a luggage label (not when BTP found it in the offenders house anyway) but BTP officers went over an above to find the bag owner and return it - obtaining a statement about the original theft too to help their case against the offender.
