How much do old carriages cost?

Just supposing that, in a flight of idle fancy, one was considering buying a couple of old Mk1/2/3 carriages and siting them on a piece of track.
These would be carriages that are bodily sound, but need interior refurbishment. They wouldn't need to be in usuable condition, as they wouldn't be moving.
Roughly (and I mean massive ballpark figures) what might it cost to purchase and transport them, and for track for them to sit on?

Which is why I asked...'what might it cost to purchase and transport them, and for track for them to sit on?'

Well you would need to be a bit more specific, would you require a large crane to move them or are you planning to put them somewhere they could be winched off the back of a low loader?

Scrap metal price x weight of vehicle will put you in the ballpark.
eg £150 / Tonne.
Transport.
Depends on how far, When, Part of a chain of moves, The Haulier you choose.

Track to sit on - 2 x 60ft rails approx 1 tonne each x £150
Sleepers approx 24 @ about £8 for scrap rate sleepers.
Fastenings,
Labour to install them.
Material transport.

You might ask your local railways PW Dept if they would do the job with scrap materials for a fee.
I know that we have on at least 3 occasions for Holiday home type locations at former stations.

You'd be as well with an old touring caravan for that- gut out most of the fittings once you've got it in place and level. Okay it's not quite as big as a coach or a shipping container but you could probably get one for £100 and you could fetch it yourself!

Thats why I'm saving However I dont think the price would go below the scrap value of the steel.

(I also think some of EMT's first class IC70's would make a nice sofa

So a couple of hundred coaches being scrapped will affect the world price of scrap will it?

a MK1/2 Coach is a reasonable order will cost approx. 20k with an additional 3 k or so transport costs..

It's somewhat larger than your shed. Basically I think you'll find your shed is small enough to fall within permoitted development rights, a railway cariage is unlikely to be small enough.

I live on a residential park so I suppose (lol) if I took the bogies off it would be a caravan hmmm plan b the buffet and 1or 2 carriages as a b n b if you could build a platform or find a disused station. ....oh eck mind working overtime now so where's that lottery ticket lol

u may need to confirm this, but my understanding is the vehicle -there is rail on sleeper sunder the wheels it technically( just the bogies) it becomes a mobile vehicle..so planning isnt needed..as it can be technically moved...thats my understanding anyway, so u could have one in your garden..or driveway if u really wanted to annoy the neighbours...

There's quite a few carriages for accomodation dotted around the country, many at old stations. Several not far from Scarborough - Cloughton and Hawsker on the old Whitby line, Ebberston on the Pickering line, plus the NYMR has two I think as well.

If you really wanted to know the cost, you could always write to some of these places and if they have the time and inclination they might divulge how much it cost them. Certainly if you went to stay in one and were therefore a paying customer/guest they might be more willing to talk about it.

Not sure about using Mark 3 stock (though I think Hawsker partly does) as I would think most people would prefer to have windows with openings in their bedroom and elsewhere, even though opening the door windows would give some through ventilation.

It's quite a few years since I dealt with such matters and I am not up to speed. And I am not enthused enough to look up the curent legislation.

I imagine you'd do quite a bit of knocking about inside to get it up to a decent standard, shouldn't be too hard to get a different window fitted then.

No idea how much they cost, but the owner of Casterton Filling Station, just north of Stamford, bought 2 Pullman coaches must have been about 20 years ago, and some track to put them on, and had them set up by the side of the filling station, where they were used as a restaurant. Remember it being in the local rag. Never went there, and they have gone now.
