How much do old carriages cost?

If you were to place a carriage in your garden, planning requirements would be based on local policy, your location, etc, but you should bear in mind that railway carriages do not receive the same exemptions as sheds, regardless if they are to be used for accomodation or not. I saw mention earlier in the thread regarding comparing a railway carriage to a mobile home. I know in Scotland at least, that carriages are not legally deemed as a mobile home. Whether this is a similar case elsewhere though, I do not know.

How about a planning permission free version? Or so it's claimed.

Transport costs are calculated on a per job basis and it would depend on distance, location and whether or not a crane was also required.

A few factors regarding transportation can be found here although they relate to using carriages for filming. Same considerations apply.

There's quite a few carriages for accomodation dotted around the country, many at old stations. Several not far from Scarborough - Cloughton and Hawsker on the old Whitby line, Ebberston on the Pickering line, plus the NYMR has two I think as well.

If you really wanted to know the cost, you could always write to some of these places and if they have the time and inclination they might divulge how much it cost them. Certainly if you went to stay in one and were therefore a paying customer/guest they might be more willing to talk about it.

Not sure about using Mark 3 stock (though I think Hawsker partly does) as I would think most people would prefer to have windows with openings in their bedroom and elsewhere, even though opening the door windows would give some through ventilation.

Those coaches at Ebberston, Hawsker and Cloughton are the ones that we installed the track for.
