The 1038 Stirling to Inverness (3 car 170) is about half full I'd say with all but two bays nearby filled with somebody.

The conductor even reminded two passengers that if the train got any busier he'd have to ask them to remove their suitcases from the seats.

Yesterday's 0813 from Manchester Piccadilly to Cleethorpes (a 3 car 185) was around a third full to Sheffield. Lots of seats reserved from Manchester were empty, but that seems to be typical for TPE services anyway.

The 0935 EMR Sheffield to St Pancras was absolutely rammed due to the East Coast line closures while the 1237 to Dover Priory was incredibly quiet with only one other person in the carriage. Rail replacement bus services towards Hastings were also very quiet, but the Kent and Sussex countryside was quite beautiful in the spring sunshine... ruined somewhat by the Metroline double decker sounding like it was about to explode for the entire journey.

On Friday I caught the 17:01 Guildford to Clapham Junction services

Some coaches were busier than others but still plenty of space. By chance, I ended up in the coach near the stairs of Platform 7, Clapham Junction

Whilst I Clapham Junction I was surprised to find there wasn't a train to London Victoria for another 8 minutes. There should be one 6 minutes later at 17:37 but maybe one was running late.

The train to Victoria was from platform 12 and fairly busy. I decided to stand.

Once id got my haircut and got my Annual Gold Card discount, added to my Oyster card, I got the 19:13 London Victoria to Herne Hill service. It wasn't packed.

At Herne Hill, I tapped our and found the area outside the station to be fairly busy with people eating and drinking. Some of then mist have come by train.

My next train was the 19:35 Herne Hill to Tulse Hill. Lots of space on the train, although the front declassified first-class section did have 2 other people sat in it, besides me.

After being in Tulse Hill for a time I boarded the 23:26. National Rail Enquiries recommended changing at Carshalton but I decided to alight at Hackbridge. The train was very empty and I enjoyed declassified first class at the front to myself. I decided to count the number of first-class labels and hardcovers on this class 700. I counted 40, 7 of which were double-sided. It would be a similar amount at the back.

Once at Hackbridge I had only myself, some nearby wildlife and cad traffic noise for company. After 9 minutes along came the 23:49 Southern service to Horsham. Whilst the train had some people on board it too was practically empty. I positioned myself nearish the front in another section of declassified first class.

I alighted at Epsom and waited for the South Western Railway 0:13 service to Guildford. This was a 455 with no loo, let alone declassified first class. Again extremely quiet. Maybe 2 people in some coaches. Despite this, we still arrived into Guildford 3 minutes late, proving that even when it is quiet, it's not easy to run trains on time.

I have no idea if the quieter trains would have been busier before covid-19 last year. I reckon trains driving on the Guildford Nee Line might have been quiet by the train they reached Guildford.

Isn't First Class declassified at the BACK of a 700?

Tuesday is day out day - so to Saffend - out from Fenchurch St to Southend via Ockendon and back via Southend Victoria to Liverpool St.

LT&S never busy at about 1112 departure but the 8 car had maybe 40 off at terminus , mostly locals nipping in for some nice breezy walking weather - the Victoria train had a shocking 6 on arrival in the city. On a positive note got my ticket checked approaching Rayleigh and the very friendly inspector said they are working hard in the peaks on checking as commuters return in some numbers and many have "forgotten" a ticket is necessary.

Thameslink getting busier both peak and off peak. Operationally interesting as the SV train went mains to electrics at Shenfield and back over at Romford (some track issue said the driver) and we were all lines cautioned at 5 mph through Cricklewood due to a report of a disturbed person. Nothing found. Both drivers exemplary in explaining the issues. Well done.

City noteably busier as was the tube. We need them to be.

What you do notice on the tube is almost no commercial ads - the spaces are filled with public information stuff , better than nothing or blank spaces.

Not a train per se, however Wellington car park (Shropshire) was barely a third full yesterday and it's hardly the biggest to begin with. Didn't see a train at all as I just used it to walk over to Wetherspoon 2min away.

Trains last Friday ranged from 2-3 in my carriage to around 30-40 in my carriage, if you count the fact that schoolchildren got off at Hall I'th Wood where our walking group boarded.

I think the masks are not so much a deterrent for short rides hence local services are doing better.

Clearly not the only factor, but will contribute significantly. Most people can tolerate them for short periods now. The train rides people make are probably only equivalent in time as a visit to the supermarket.
Masks are a god damn nightmare, especially for longer services. Helps to buy food and drink for a bit of relief from the stupid things. Going to have a jaunt on Friday from Sheffield to Bognor Regis so it'll be interesting to see if its any busier.

Always, but on the ‘suburban’ 700 services around the Wimbledon Loop the front is declassified also.
But there were a few trains where because it runs fast north of London, the whole service was shown in the timetable as having first class. This I concluded, first class on such services was in operation at the front. No idea if that is currently the case.

Not that I think anyone would do anything if you sat there.

I have a particular interest in sitting in declassified first class because I'm amazed at how much there is.

How interesting. Thanks for that. I am the don't of person where if it says first class was in operation I would go to the back carriage, where it isn't. I even checked Real Time Trains to ensure it was standard class, given the time of day I was travelling.

11.29 from Tweedbank arrived at Waverley with all bays occupied and a few standees. Pre Covid I suspect some would have found a seat. By that crude guide I'd say the 2 coach 158 was about 55% loaded.

It was slightly more on our return on the 15.24 from Edinburgh, maybe 65%, with 3 in our 4 bay.

However the LNER and XC trains we saw had very, very few aboard. Tourists have evaporated and commuters are still staying away. Princes Street shops that had been there as long as most remember are shuttered up for good. How long those remaining can carry on with the current levels of footfall must be a big concern.

In my experience long distance services are still very quiet. I'm often the only person in my carriage in my morning Avanti service.

The only relatively busy long distance services are the Manchester Avanti services, and even then they are still not exactly full or anything. They are getting busier slowly which is a good sign but its slow progress. Another thing, is first class travel seems to be completely dead at the minute.

Local services and services down in GTR and in particuarl southeastern land are getting busier, though, so good signs there.

I noticed a XC HST pass Dawlish earlier on towards Plymouth that was absolutely packed. Maybe people escaping for the Bank Holiday?

I was at Derby station yesterday (Thurs) at 11am and it was utterly empty, more staff than passengers.

In the afternoon I went to Matlock and back and the trains were about 20% full. No ticket checks but barriers at Derby were staffed

Funny you should mention first class. I walked through two in a class 450 and not a soul.

This was on the 10:34 Guildford to Waterloo service.

I was surprised at the number who boarded at Guildford.

I got in, on coach 5 if I think 12, where I counted 9 people. In the next carriage, 4, it may have been 12 or 14. My short term memory isn't great. Then another carriage of perhaps slightly less and finally carriage 2 where it was 10, including myself.

Now we are waiting at the junction with Woking and will be 2 minutes late departing Woking. I wonder with fewer trains running if we will make up that time by Clapham Junction. I guess it depends on how much allowance they make for us reaching Clapham Junction. The x49 from Guildford seems to have no problem making up lost time.

I suspected the train was indeed late 2⅓ minutes so.

The next train was the 11:12 Clapham Junction to Bognor Regis and Portsmouth & Southsea. I boarded in carriage 2 of 8 and it felt just but there was only 8 people in the standard class and 1 in the first-class area. They were a member of rail staff. It was the class of carriage where the first-class has no door to divide it from standard class. I would imagine more rail staff are using first-class off-peak on these services than paying customers. Well, the quality isn't worth the increase.

Coach 3 had 13 people in it. In coach 4 I decided to stay and go no further as a guard was talking to someone and blocking the aside. Turns out all they were doing is checking where people with luggage were going and where to change. I had a few bags with me but mustn't have looked like I have luggage. As it is, I knew where I was going

I could alight at either East Croydon, the recommended station, Gatwick Airport or Three Bridges, to reach Haywards Heath.

As it was a same platform change at both East Croydon and Gatwick Airport, I opted for East Croydon as the next train to Brighton, 11:29 would be a class 700 and I could see how busy declassified first class was. I rather enjoy sitting in this uncomfortable class, in the knowledge, it is slightly less uncomfortable than standard class on this rolling stock and I don't have to buy a first-class ticket to do so!

The section was empty, save for an empty paper take away bag. Actually, there is 1 other person. Perhaps they walked through to this section, just as I would do if I boarded further down.

I did see someone sat in standard class, probably unaware you can sit here. Not surprising when the only message to say it is standard class appears once every few minutes and 40 labels or headrests are proclaiming it to be first-class continuously!

No idea how busy the rest of the 12 car train was.

Update: Despite the train being empty and arriving at Balcombe on time, it managed to depart there a minute late and arrive into Haywards Heath 3½ minutes late. The nearest train ahead of it on Real Time Trains departed Haywards Heath at 11:50 and there was no non-stopping train in between.

Something caused the train to stop and slow down that we were not told about and it shows how even lightly loaded trains can be delayed. So 2vout if 3 trains didn't arrive on time, despite lower loadings.

I suspect punctuality dropping will be the sign people are returning to public transport in greater numbers.

Been to Birmingham shopping today. Took 10.08 from Hinckley. No less than 15 got on here and about 8 off. Nicely loaded. Easily 40 in the centre car. On way back now. Just seen 6 car Class 323 heading to either Four Oaks or Lichfield. Good load of I'd say least 100. Good number both of and off. Vogager just left for the South West. More than half full easily. 15.22 backnow. Very busy. Rear 2 coaches are close to SD Capacity easily. I'm in 1st car which is always quieter at Birmingham. Still about 20 in my coach. Things are certainly picking up! Edit. Just seen pair of 350s arrive from either Northampton or Euston. Loads on that service. Easily 200 plus. I know it's a Friday and bank hol weekend but trains in my opinion are much busier now.

Lots travelling today, as MML and WCML closed all weekend, therefore people doing their journeys now. MML looked busy this evening.

I concur, travelled from Milton Keynes to Euston earlier and went through Euston at around 17:30 and the station was the busiest I'd seen it in a long while, and all the long distance departures that were departing within the next 20 minutes all already had their platforms announced but that concourse was still packed.

Big blocks on sussex as well with London Victoria - Windmill Bridge Junction/Streatham Common being blocked every weekend in May.

But plenty of alternatives for most Victoria passengers.

I do wonder if there was something else afoot on the MML tonight - announcement at St Pancras this evening was ‘would the trainspotters on Platform 4 please leave space for passengers to board this service” o_O

True about their being plenty of alternatives for most Victoria passengers, almost everything long distance is diverted into London Bridge, its more disruptive to metro services arguably.

That's a new one in terms of announcements! I presume this is to do with the HST's time almost being up?

The 1745 Notts to St Pancras HST left Notts full and standing so I'm not surprised. I boarded a stopping 222 earlier and every row was occupied in standard class.

Nottingham station seemed to be bustling around 1800 hours, people everywhere.

WCML closure means that EMR trains are very busy today, often full and standing so far.

I feel sorry for staff dealing with the customers this weekend. Everyone has it in their head that not only should they have a seat but they should also have only have a few other people in their coach.

09.26 Wigan NW to Manchester Picc (07.47 ex Barrow to the Airport) was busy this morning. All tables occupied. Some crew standing in the vestibule commented on it. Few got off at Oxford Road, left Piccadilly almost empty.

10.08 Picc to Buxton was fairly lightly loaded (2 x 150).

10.15 Picc to Chester was fairly busy, but not overly so (2 x 150).

16.15 Chester to Man Vic (Leeds service, 2 x 195/0) was not very busy.

17.5x Man Vic to Wigan W (ex Leeds) was middling. Most banks of seats had at least one person, but didn't feel full.

Lots of young (aged 15 to 30) people travelling. I'd say 75% of passengers on my trains today.

It’s more of Boris’s populism. I can’t (legally) stay on my own in a Premier Inn prior to spending a day visiting somewhere this week, yet after having spent billions on measures like furlough we can still have a bank holiday frenzy.

On the one hand it’s good we’re seeing scenes going some way towards resembling normality, but I don’t get why we still have stuff closed causing people to pack more tightly into what’s open. Likewise I can see little reason why a lot of people can’t return to their substantive workplace now, much less urgency there!

We went for a long walk this afternoon. The ThamesLink services we saw from our walk didn’t appear massively busier than has been the case, though the Cambridge-Brighton was a bit more notably loaded.

The drunks have been problematic to say the least. I personally have had an absolute nightmare of a week trying to stop incapable people from causing havoc/killing themselves/someone else. Social distancing my arse, doesn't really come into play when you're trying to stop a legless pisshead from falling down the side of a train and they try to kiss you in the process (thankfully in this case I was wearing my mask even if he wasn't, because it meant I could just throw it in the bin!!). Here we are as ever though, picking up the pieces.

It's nice to see people back and having a good time but I've not missed the having to clear people up afterwards.
