I know more than you, I have been shortlisted out of 80 applicants for the role of Revenue Protection Officer and spoken with Revenue Protection managers in great detail!!
...while 221129 already works in the rail industry.

Being shortlisted for a revenue protection job does not necessarily mean that you have a lot of knowledge about revenue protection matters.
On the other side of the coin there's probably £250 million year plus being extracted from the travelling public who use TVM's , click on Internet without knowing what there doing. Don't know of split ticket options, railcards etc etc.
That is an excellent point, though the figure must be much greater than that. It's quite normal to identify savings of 25% or greater.

I don't think innocent people should be prosecuted either. I am just saying that IMO, it would be a good idea for XC to introduce more RPOs on board...
You were earlier saying you wanted them to be taking witness statements from people.
to minimise experiences like the OP's.
The OP hardly had a negative experience by not having anyone ask to see his ticket.
If an RPO knows their restrictions, validity etc, then there is no need for people with valid tickets to to be prosecuted. All of the RPOs I have met have had excellent knowledge on validity.
And I've met, or helped others who had the misfortune to have encountered, several staff with responsibility for inspecting tickets, whose knowledge is the opposite of excellent (though I am sure would claim to have excellent knowledge if asked).

In fact certain places are hotspots for customers with valid tickets to be incorrectly told their ticket isn't valid, e.g. the London Euston gateline to name just one.

Possibly been missed on this thread (can't see it mentioned) but XC are actively advertising for Multi-Skilled RPOs at two locations.

Assume they will primarily be for working the front half of double voyagers, but it also mentions in the job spec station CC duties, bus co-ordination, downloading on-train CCTV whilst onboard and other non-standard tasks not usually associated with an RPO role.

Surprisingly there are a few things in my job on there that I often find myself doing - ie they are trying to get as much out of them as poss.

The RSS role is a lot more than just revenue protection.

To be fair I've nor heard of anyone having problems at Euston with Cambrian Off Peak Returns (Restriction Code VJ) in the evening peak for a long time.

Checked twice on XC on Friday between Reading and Durham with the team change over in Birmingham

Inspector taking her job very seriously when faced with six students travelling on four young person rail cards
I was told by an XC TTI that they are doing this 100% nowadays, for all reduction card tickets - I am a 'Senior'. It was the first time I had ever been asked that. Clearly there has been substantial fraudulent purchase (you can buy anything online without proving that you have a card).

I regularly see XC Revenue Protection Inspectors (with that title on their name badge) working on trains between Birmingham and Manchester, either singly or in pairs - I have also had my ticket checked by XC staff on strike/dispute days (including by someone not in full uniform but who was carrying a ticket machine, and was doing train dispatch duties onboard). Perhaps I am just lucky!

Interesting as they aren't called that on XC...

.

As Ive said before we don't have a TVM here at Newtown so we get to see what the great British internet buying public purchase. Corporate Accounts are the worst the amount of times Ive seen Anytime Returns printed off followed by seat reservations at times where the off peak return would be fine beggars believe....we still get the old two singles more expensive that the return ticket purchasers as well. Unless you know what your doing you will just click on what you think is the best option. Internet retailing with our over complicated ticket system is quids in as folk buy stuff they don't need if its more £ then its kerching and if they buy a fixed AP or Off Peak and then find they need to travel at different times staff can charge them more £. I very rarely see anyone doing split tickets from a TOD collection.

Late running services are another good way of seeing what people are buying. We usually get a mini stampede of people who have bought elsewhere panicking about their tight 7 minute connections at Wolverhampton and Stafford on there Any Permitted Return portions to Euston. The via Birmingham tickets are cheaper and you have a lot better connection times, one change and get to Euston all of 10 minutes slower....the internet always pushes the Trent Valley route as "quicker".

I'm sure I actually put that in my post?!?
