Hornby 156

Just wondering how good are the recent models of the 156s by Hornby? I've taken a wee look around Hattons and am tempted by the Saltire 156 (which I've always thought looked quite pretty IRL).

One thing that bigs me about it though is the roof. It's blue when most of the Saltired 156s have grey/black roofs. I'm thinking a good way to fix this would be to primer the roof and black/grey spraypaint it with masking tape over the rest of the train where I don't want paint to be. Think this would work?

You can remove the roof quite easily so no masking should be needed, it simply clips on.

The Hornby model is the old Lima one with a new motor, which is good enough for that unit and maybe a dummy unit too, and a DCC socket. There are no working lights on the model.

There is a set of parts by Hurst Models if you wish to replace the rather boxy underframe equipment and get some deflectors/snow ploughs.

I bought a 156 of eBay a few years back which had the underframe work done (not cheap, set me back around £100). Didn't have the time to do the work myself, but it does look much better IMO.

I see. A wee bit of the Saltire does go onto the roof so some masking would still be required but it's nice to know not it's not much.

As for the underframe, I don't really know much about that, to be honest. I don't pay attention to stuff like that and as long as it's a fairly good representation of a ScotRail 156 I'm happy. The only reason the roof gets me is because it effects the look of the front of the unit slightly. The snow deflectors, however, are a necessity.
