Personally I think it's obvious that, once HS2 west is built, there'll be a good CBR for a 'cut the corner' line between London & Nottingham, sending trains for Leeds, Sheffield & Newcastle due north instead of 'round the corner' via Birmingham International.
Then extend HS2 (E) from Leeds to Newcastle & Edinburgh, so have two routes to Scotland, one west coast, probably calling only at the Manchester Parkway (Preston?) and Carlisle, and one via the east for Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds & Newcastle.
