I ask again, who are the 20,000 people an hour that want to travel from London to Birmingham...train 3-4 mins headway carrying a potential 1000 punters. They have to be near full to pay for thgemselves!!!
I believe this has been answered many many times. The initial Labour plans for HS2 to Birmingham had a connection to the WCML around Lichfield where trains for destinations north of Birmingham could join meaning that destinations north (north/west) of Brum could be served using HS2
The current government plans indicate extensions to Manchester and Leeds and I would assume the same principle applies with assumed planned connections to the WCML and ECML.
HS2 has never been specifically about London-Birmingham trains, it's a common NIMBY comment to make.
