This feels like a stupid question that I already know the answer to, but I thought I’d ask anyway.

Is the Heathrow Express an exception to the “not before 10:00am” / “not before 9:30am” railcard rules?

A relative arrived into Heathrow and bought a ticket using the HEX app at 7am, discounted by a Network Railcard. Trainline won’t sell such a ticket at that time of the day, and the Railcards’ policies seem clear that they are not valid at that time.

However on looking at the HEX App and website, no time restrictions are indicated, and they had no problems getting through the barriers at both Heathrow and Paddington.

It's a mistake.

Network railcard users can receive the following discounts:
  • Adults save 1/3 on full-fare Express Saver tickets
Please note, discounts using a Network Railcard are only available on Heathrow Express after 10:00 Monday-Fridays or at any time on weekends and public holidays.
However, as they had an itinerary, their ticket was valid, as per contract and consumer law.

No doubt this mistake will be fixed soon, now it's been posted here, given a director of the relevant company reads this forum.

So if anyone wants to take advantage of this, you'll have to be quick!

Good find!

They had better correct this while they're at it...
Please note that discounts using an Annual Gold Card are only available on Heathrow Express after 10:00 Monday-Fridays or at any time on weekends and public holidays

Interestingly they don’t show you can use the veterans railcard on that faq.

But then it’s available when purchasing, unsure of the time allowed, etc.
