A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Having seen "the back streets" of Blackpool in recent times and noting its new title of "DHSS-by-the-Sea" and the drawn and haggard faces of those resident there, can I nominate Blackpool and make a suggestion for a new "Illuminations" display to be placed in both the Bispham and the South Shore approaches that will span the coastal road...."Abandon hope, all ye who enter here"

Or even "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

Paul Sidorczuk, being caught out by a common misquote, surely not?

Compared to those holes down south, Blackpool has the redeeming features of:

a) It's on the coast, so you're not surrounded by it
b) It's a very very cheap place to live.

(I live in Blackpool by the way, and it's got character - which is more than can be said for a lot of towns!)

Not really a misquote, as the quote that you show looks to be a singular connotation, but the addition of the word "all" adds extra emphasis to the multitudinous hordes who have chosen to make Blackpool the unfortunate "DHSS-by-the-Sea" that it now finds itself the unhappy holder of in 2013...

Ah - I assumed you were quoting Dante as the phrase you wrote is a common misquote from there. My quote contains "all" - just in a different place, adding to just how much hope should be abandoned. <D

May I enquire into the following:-

How clean are the coastal waters and the beaches?

Are there still any sewerage pipe discharges into the sea water?

Why is it "very very cheap" to live there?

Please note that when the word "character" is used in a Northern connotation, it invariably means something "lacking in character".

If towns had sponsors, my own town of Prestbury would be sponsored by Fortnum and Mason....Blackpool would be sponsored by "the local Pound Shop".....<(

Sits back and waits for the flak to fly..:D

I have been to Blackpool a few times over the years and It's ok for a day maybe 2 but after that you've had enough.

The so-called Golden Mile is a filthy area especially after dark.

Every second shop is either a pound shop a betting office or a charity shop but this isn't by any means exclusive to Blackpool.
