Today I received a letter from tfl saying I’ve been reported for a criminal offence, it doesn’t state what the offence was or where it took place. All I know is I wasn’t stopped by any inspector. My question is is it possible for them to find my name and address through a camera? If memory serves correctly there isn’t even any cameras at my station, so im very confused. My first thought was someone i know got caught by an inspector and gave my name and address instead. Can someone please give me some advice on what to do next and if it’s possible for my name and address to be found through a camera.

1. Are you certain that you have not committed any offence?
2. It would be useful for you to post a copy of the letter here, with any personal or other identifiable information removed

Does it say when it took place? Were you travelling that day/time? Do you use Oyster or do you use a contactless bank card?

If you are using a registered Oyster card they can look you up from that.

Another possibility, perhaps more likely, is that a different person has been stopped and has given your details.

For us to advise you properly we will need to see a scan/photo of all pages front and back of the letter received. Cover any personal information. A single justice procedure notice will always say what it is they’re accusing you of and where they say you did it, so I’m a bit confused at this point.

This is exactly why im confused, I don’t have a registered Oyster card and if I do i haven’t used it in years. So if i didn’t tap my contactless how would they find my information? Furthermore it doesn’t state the offence, where i committed or or what time. It just has a date. I’ll attach a picture if it’ll help, thanks for replies aswell.

Did you travel on TfL services at all on the day in question?

Did you travel anywhere on TfL network on 7th June (tube, overground, tram, bus etc).

If not, then fill out saying Not guilty as never travelled on date stated.

You can't do much more as Dont know where or what time they are referring to, so presumably your details were quoted by someone else.

From memory TfL often then just drop it, can't remember if they send you an apology and/or gift for wasting your time, or simply ignore you.

It's probably worth pointing out that this isn't a Single Justice Procedure Notice: it's what we tend to call a 'verification letter' from TfL. So you haven't yet been charged with anything - and while you're not obliged to get involved in the process, in practice it's probably a good idea to take the chance to try to head off a prosecution before it begins.

So as @Snow1964 suggests above, think about whether you used TfL services at all last Friday. Check the bank/credit card statement for your contactless to see if they give any help. And if it turns out that you didn't travel anywhere with TfL on Friday, then write back to tell them so.

It might also be worth thinking hard about whether you ever had a registered Oyster card: if it turns out that you did, do you know where it is? Might someone have 'borrowed' it without your knowing? I can see that as a possible way which might have started this hare running.

Bearing in mind the following

I may have forgotten to tap, however how would they find my information is my question?
Think hard about whether 'forgetting to tap' may amount to an offence: it seems to me that if you remembered to tap at one end of a journey you will face a maximum fare because the system will work out a fare for you. If on the other hand you forgot to tap at both ends that could be rather more serious.

If you forget to tap at both ends nothing happens and you don’t get charged.

Okay let’s say hypothetically, I didn’t tap on either end and was on the train for a very short time, and there wasn’t barriers at either end, how would they find my details. That’s my biggest question that’s been puzzling me all day. I’m using a hypothetical scenario because honestly I’m not a big fan of admitting crimes online even if it’s for my own benefit, digital footprint is a real thing. Again I do still appreciate all the helpful feedback.

Someone may have seen you (in person or on CCTv) and recognised you from a previous indecent? Has anything happened before when you had your details taken?

Youi need to tell people on here exactly what happened so they can give you the correct advice.

Thanks for the correction.

I'm not sure how helpful we can be if we're mixing a hypothetical incident with a real TfL verification letter.

The thing is, TfL really have written to you. So while it's interesting to speculate on how they've managed to get your name and address, it's not going to change the fact that they have them. Writing back to say 'I don't know how you got my details' will not make TfL go away.

It's possible we might be able to help you with what's really happened (although as you will have seen if you have looked through this forum, TfL's near-to-invariable approach is to prosecute). But we can only do this if you're willing to share the facts.

Let me put it to you this way - I would know if I had been committing offences and if I had been stopped about them.

Have you been stopped for any incident recently?

No I haven’t been stopped recently, the last time I got in trouble with the tfl was about 5 years ago when I was quite young. It was my first time leaving London and I put all my money onto my Oyster card thinking it’ll work outside London. I had a very rude awakening when I got to the barriers, the police officers there weren’t considerate at all and just gave me a fine, they were just doing there job I guess. Anyways that was the last time I got in trouble with the TfL which was 5 years ago.

So you weren’t stopped on the date in question and you should simply reply as such. Someone else is using your details.

Did Willesden Green / Jubilee line figure in your travel plans on Friday 7 June 2024?

The thing is, hypothetical scenarios will get hypothetical advice, but you’ve got a very real letter from TfL

If you want useful advice - and if you read other threads you’ll realise this place is a goldmine of free, relevant, useful advice - you need to be a bit more open and explain to the best of your knowledge what happened

If you look at other threads you’ll see lots of examples of people doing that and getting positive results, so hopefully that gives you the confidence to open up a bit

That’s what I was thinking. Thanks for the clarification. And no I didn’t use the Willesden or julbilee line

Okay let’s say that hypothetical scenario is real. Imma add more information to the hypothetical scenario if it helps. I got on for one stop, didn’t tap in at either end because there was no barriers. Obviously this is all hypothetical on my end but you can take it as a real event.

Then the least that can be said is that if you commit offences and people in your circle are also committing offences, then this will make life difficult for you.

The easiest way to stay out of trouble is to not break the law, because now you're worried.

You are talking in riddles, and if you carry on like that people will not help, remember they are volunteering their time.

You were asked if you travelled 7th June. So far you have refused to say so.

You then discuss admitting crimes online, presumably you wouldn't even have thought of this if you hadn't ever been involved in a crime.

No one has any idea what the offence might be, because you are not giving any useful info. For all we know you did travel, there was a group of you, and someone got caught (which might be you or someone else), but your name was given. If so you probably know who it is even if (for obvious reasons) don't want to put their name on a public forum.

I think you need to give everyone the proper story

All this talking in circles is giving me a headache.

Did you travel or not?

Were you spoken to by a TfL officer or not?

My twopenn'orth:

Last year, I did the London Marathon. Afterwards, to get the pictures, I took a picture of myself on the app, and it then came up with about a hundred pictures of me. I haven't got any particularly unusual features, but they were all me, and no false positives. Sometimes I looked like me, sometimes I looked like a bulldog riding on the back of a pick-up truck, sometimes I was half a face in the crowd. The point is, whilst we all know about facial recognition, it is insane how much more advanced it is than we think it is. Now, I have no idea whether it is ever used in law enforcement, but....

If I had a letter saying I had committed a crime on a certain date, but I knew that I hadn't, then I would fight it all the way. I'm one of those people that would like to be pulled up for a breathalyser test, safe in the knowledge of my total innocence.

However, if I had a letter saying I had committed a crime on a certain date and coincidentally and hypothetically, had committed a crime on that date, I wouldn't be quite so bullish. Whilst I wouldn't know exactly how the Man found out about it, there would seem to be a good chance that he had.

Reading between the lines the OP probably did travel between 2 stations without tapping in which is an offence. Unless you had a paper ticket that covered you for the journey

TfL will need to prove the OP did this, they haven't disclosed their evidence yet.
If they do reply then it can be in as much or as little detail as the OP wishes, considering that whatever is written may be used as evidence.

Yes but how on earth would they know who they are? They weren't stopped. This seems like a red herring.

It is best to reply saying something along the lines of "I was not stopped on this date and am concerned to read your letter. As I do not know what, if any, offence you are corresponding with me about, I trust this verification letter will be the last correspondence I will receive from you".

Okay let’s say that hypothetical scenario is real.
All these questions about a hypothetical situation make it increasingly difficult to see what is true and what isn't. And when you can't see what may or may not be true, it's impossible to give advice. You are really not helping yourself at all here.
