Currently however, the hottest place on Tuesday looks likely to be somewhere in Yorkshire - Doncaster or York look the most likely candidates right now. Which really isn't where I would have guessed as a likely candidate for getting the hottest temperature ever. Will be interesting to see if the models have got that right.
On the BBC regional weather map on the website, on the North page, there is a list of named places. Against Sheffield for Tuesday, a temperature of 42 was shown when I referred to that page yesterday.
I was up and about at 0500 this morning, carrying out the advice of opening all the widows to let any trapped hot air out for 30 minutes then shutting the windows and drawing all the curtains.

Amazon was doing one for £170 or £190 last week (Prime Day) and today I've seen one for £279 with a 10% discount voucher. Given they should last 5 or 10 years with no maintenance (just use it every few months even in winter) they're extremely cheap if you look at the total cost of ownership.
Sure, I've spent around £5 a day running it (constantly) in electricity and it's noisy, but I don't care in order to have a comfortable bedroom and having no trouble sleeping. You get used to the noise, and can always use earplugs at night.
I've had this smugness now for 20 years, and yet even now I tell people about it and they dismiss the idea because a) we only have a few hot days per year or b) a good fan is just as effective... Sigh!
With more people working from home, they're a no-brainer - although for anyone working from home all the time, a split system properly installed is even better long-term.
24.4c here in Bolton (550' ASL) and 21.7 inside just after mid-day. My builder worked this morning, gone for lunch and some materials, probably won't return this PM as the side he's working on faces the sun and there's no shade.

It is possible, was demonstrated in Finland recently.
Basically get about 100 tonnes of builders sand and stick it in an insulated silo with electric heating elements running through it, powered from solar panels, sand can be heated to about 500c. Stays fairly hot for 6 months then you pipe your heating water through it in winter and get virtually free winter heating.
Or just instal a ground source heat pumps and water coils in a big trench in your garden. Again virtually free heating (Ignoring installation cost)
Still, at least I'm not the workmen outside, who seem to have decided this is a good day to re-lay the pavement! It certainly needed doing, the pavements around here were awful, but I'm not sure today is really the right day to do it...!

Yep, that's pretty much what I did here in London. Lots of windows open at 7am to let in all the cool air (19C according to BBC weather). Then closed them all and drew all the curtains when I had to go out for couple of hours about 8am. Tin foil on the outside of the kitchen windows (South facing and no curtains on them to close). And so far it's worked a charm. Nice and cool in the house, but stepping outside feels like a wall of heat.
Not sure whether it'll work as well tomorrow though, seeing as there won't be any cool air to let in the house in the morning according to tomorrow's forecast.

I'm not fully certain - but my suspicion is, probably not very well. Your radiators are shaped and positioned so that the heat the water releases can very easily rise up and therefore spread into the room. But if you pumped in cold water, then that would cool the air next to the radiators: The cooler air will tend to fall, not rise, so - because of the position/shape of the radiators, it won't be able to spread into the room effectively.
Also, there's a rather hard limit on how cold you can make the water - seeing as when it hits zero, it'll turn to ice, so I'd guess you probably couldn't go below about 5C in practice. I'm not sure whether that's a big enough difference from the temperatures you'd be trying to cool the room from.
I cannot bring myself to close windows and curtains during the day, I'd feel like a hermit who keeps themselves hidden all day, it's just not natural and it's clear skies with a light breeze here which wouldn't flow through the house if they were closed. Even in mid winter I keep a window open to let the fresh air in. I'm just glad I don't live somewhere where windows don't open or can't be for security reasons at night.
if it was cool enough - yes it would, but it would be grossly inefficient and leave puddles of condensation on the floor under each radiator. most importantly you’d have to find a way of getting the water cold enough in the circulation system.
