A lot cooler in south west Lincolnshire today. A lovely breeze from the west makes for a lovely pleasant day out there.
During my 70 mile bike ride today they were way more cyclists and walkers around than normal. Guessing they were making the most of it after staying indoors for the last 2 hot days.
We also had a few spots of rain overnight but its made sod all different to the garden.

Temperatures like we have today are normal for this country. What we had for the last two days is not.
If we were seeing record cold temperatures right now then you may have a point, but we aren't.
Also looking at the top 10 highest temperatures in the country on record shows a clear pattern - nearly all of them are in very recent history.

Whilst I would be cautious about a journalist or politician making this point, I suspect that an actual "climate scientist" (your phrase) will have a rather better understanding of peak vs. average temperatures than you do...

The problem I have with the climate change scenario is that it gives Government’s an excuse to give us more taxes. Whether or not that money goes into any actual climate system is debatable.
But the thing is, anything we do is just p*****g in the wind, as we're not in the top 10 polluters in the world. China in the biggest polluters, but who is going to police them?
All the wealthy counties need to work together to solve this. I risk sounding like a scaremonger but imagine if temps became even hotter than yesterday here on an annual basis.

Because the key to solving the climate crisis is developing the technology necessary to make greener energy sources viable and economic. This means the technology is then available to the world, including the major polluters. At the end of the day, breakthroughs can be made by any country and the UK has world leading studies ongoing such as the nuclear fusion projects at Aldermaston and Oxford. I imagine if a cheaper greener energy source becomes available, China, India and the US will be as keen as anyone to switch supply. The reason they are major polluters currently is because it is cheaper.

This is true, and China is rapidly switching to renewables. This year alone they will install solar and wind capacity of around 150GW, which on average capacity factors would be enough to power the U.K. They will be doing the same every year for at least the next decade. And, with huge hydroelectric power on tap, they have the ability to change their renewables mix as conditions allow. Although with such a large country, it is usually windy somewhere!
Its a lot cooler in there that's probably why they don't notice it. But I'd have thought they'd have noticed the increased amount of sand available to stick it in due to drought.
This is partially my point, reliable temperature records only go back a few decades so, whilst a newspaper headline reading "Hottest day ever!" may sound scary, it really means "hottest day in recent times".
How hot was the summer of 1883? Or that of 1693? Or even that of 1066? Simple answer is we don't know and have no way of knowing.
Until we know whether the slight rise in temperatures in recent years is a short term blip or a long term trend we should reserve judgement on whether climate change is a serious issue.

It is quite clear that the world, on average, is warming. It is not as clear whether this is part of a natural process or due to human induced change - however the vast weight of the evidence so far is that it is the latter. It's going to be a millennium or two before we know for sure...
However, assuming this is the case that humans are the cause, much of the problems are irreversible now, and the Government's insane net zero strategy is only going to make the average person in this country poorer, whilst doing diddly squat for global climate change. And thus we will be in a terrible position when it comes to coping with the effects of it, and helping other less fortunate nations.
We need to divert our climate budgets to mitigation strategies, not prevention. Unless the whole world adopts the measures necessary to reverse the process, it just isn't possible - and that won't happen. And even if they did, it's not guaranteed it will make a difference anyway.
But there is no way that bankrupting this country chasing Net Zero is going to change that. Not while China, Russia, USA, etc are going about their business. It is a drop in the ocean. 20 years is a very short time in what is a process that has been going on for 200 years.
And even if we do agree on that path as a global community, renewal energy isn't clean. The amount of mining needed for batteries, turbines, solar panels, etc in the quantities needed is horrendous. The environmental damage of hydroelectric. The pesticides and fertilizers needed to sustain plant based agriculture if livestock is phased out. There are no clean solutions that can be used on a large scale.
Ironically, probably the most viable is nuclear power, yet this is now being phased out by some countries (eg Germany), which is just insane.
Some very welcome cooling light rain in Sheffield this morning. It’s also taken the smokey/smoggy air away that was hanging over the North of the city yesterday, presumably caused by moorland fires.
Still need a lot more rain though but much more normal weather is forecast ahead.
Well we do, we have ice cores (and various other proxies) that can be used to reconstruct climate going back 800,000 years. And guess what they all show. Have a look at the British Antarctic Survey and their take on it going back to the summer of 797,978 BC showing relatively cyclic pattens until a spike in greenhouse gasses and temperature in the last few hundred years.
And just to cut off your arguments at the pass. No, its not the highest spike yet but there is also a lag between temperature catching up CO2 and its also quite clear that the temperature does mirror the CO2 concentration. Also remember that the 0 for temperature is based on temperature today which is why it always looks colder and that modern temperatures are normal, but they are not, we are in a natural spike that we are making worse. And before someone brings up Milankovitch Cycles they don't prove anything other than we are currently sat in a predictable 100,000 year cycle hot spell that we are making worse.

Chornobyl happened, people are scared about how dangerous nuclear power is, even though it was a unique situation caused by a cheap, secretive USSR reactor design. Fukushima happened and people got scared, even though that was, again, a unique situation to Japan caused by an anomalously large tsunami, which is unlikely to happen along the Rhine.
Will we get medals for enduring the record breaking heatwave and be telling our grandchildren ''Well it wasn't like it was in 2022''. when they get 45 degrees + days.

Totally agree. And the simple fact is that if you tell everyone 'you won't be able to eat the things you want to eat anymore, you're not going to be able to heat your home to a temperature you're comfortable with, most of you won't be able to own your own motor vehicle, and you won't be able to go for your two week summer holiday or visit your family in other countries' then the vast majority of people will just say 'I think we'd rather put up with it being a couple of degrees hotter and keep things as they are, thank you very much'.

You can't just push ahead with overturning our current way of life in favour of something significantly less appealing, without significant pushback. And if you go too far then people will just give up entirely on the idea of looking after the environment and turn off from the whole message.

Exactly - and also worth mentioning that much of said mining is done using child labour in truly horrendous conditions.
There's a lot of deception around at the moment about how all this is supposedly going to be done. It can't be scaled up in the way they pretend - for example, the plan isn't for everyone to replace their petrol car with an electric one, the plan is quite clearly for significantly fewer people to own cars at all. Maybe they'll be able to get people to support that if suitable alternatives become available, but currently the way it is being described simply isn't honest.

It is times such as you describe above when you see how governments of different political views deal with the matter of such stated dissent of the populace. I am sure contributors to this thread have a good idea which countries will clamp down extremely hard on such dissent.
