Heatwave what Heatwave ?

Both France and Spain had their hottest May on record too.

So did Italy....and we're now on course for the hottest June on record too. Since arriving here on 11th May, the afternoon temperature in our garden has been consistently above 30 and this afternoon it was 36.

I went out of my flat in Blackpool on Friday wearing shorts and T shirt, having heard on the radio how hot it was, and immediately turned back to put on more clothes as it was so cold.

My phone is telling me it's 18°C today and there is sunshine. Yesterday was oppressively dull and felt more like February, to the extent that I actually switched the heating on for a while in the evening (thus ruining the graph on my domestic energy monitor!)

In Falkirk it is currently raining and not that warm, probably the same in most of Scotland.

Somewhere in the British Isles did record a new June high last Friday i.e. St Helier in Jersey, much closer to France than to any part of the U.K.

Looks set to be a mostly grey/dull day in West Dunbartonshire for most of today after yesterday's scorcher, to the point I(!) had to wear shorts and a vest complete with a lathering of sunscreen when I went out to get dog food (I somehow forgot to do my neck and chest though, and I now have red skin in both places as a reminder of such forgetfulness).

While changing trains at Arezzo this afternoon I experienced 40 degrees Celsius for the first time since the early 1990s. Luckily it was a dry heat....had it been humid, it would have been unbearable. Unfortunately our local branch line unit had been sitting in a siding in full sun for a couple of hours with the pan down and no air conditioning working. It took the best part of the one hour journey for the newly-switched on air con to bring the internal temperature down to 30 and when we alighted at our village up in the Appennine Mountains the outside temperature was still 35. I can't help thinking that we're going to feel very chilly when we get back to the UK next week!

Anything over 35 should trigger an automatic bank holiday in my opinion!

Nope, this is the first time:

For the first time temperatures of 40C have been forecast in the UK and the Met Office has issued the first ever Red warning for exceptional heat.

Exceptional heat is expected to affect a large part of England early next week, with temperatures likely in the high 30s C in some places and perhaps even reaching 40C.

The Red Extreme heat national severe weather warning will cover Monday and Tuesday (18th and 19th July) for parts of central, northern, eastern and southeastern England. An Amber Extreme heat warning, has been in place for much of England and Wales for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (17th – 19thJuly) since earlier this week. Today the amber areas are also being extended to cover Cornwall, west Wales and parts of southern Scotland.

The warning type only came into effect last year, however the intensity of the heatwave forecast is certainly new, with the 38.7C record from 3 years ago expected to be broken.

Usually, it's more like 37°F in downtown Batley.

Other random locations up north would also fit the bill!

Forecast for Hebden Bridge is 23 for Saturday, 29 for Sunday, 34 for Monday and Tuesday.....then a decidedly chilly 19 for Wednesday! It will be just like being back in Italy again.

Actually, you get a lot of cloud wave in Yorkshire...called lenticular and very nice it is to be in front of one going up like a lift at a smooth rate of knots.

The forecast heat temps are concerning however, certainly for those of us who have pets (a dog)a and those who have family with health conditions.

Back in July 2019 I remember the temperature in Leeds reaching 37C - in those days for me it was a half hour walk, half hour train, 15-minute walk, half hour bus ride, 15-minute walk to work and then same in reverse after work. I particularly remember waiting at a bus stop at 6pm and it was just too hot unless in the shade.

... and 24 hours ago, I bought me an air-con unit.

It's a bit noisy, but then I'm deaf, so hardly hear it.
I have it on my landing blowing cooled air downstairs, and there does seem to be an improvement in the lounge, where it feels dryer and fresher. Never thought I'd need one in the UK, but I think I'm now in an "at risk" category, having survived a heart attack in December 2019.

Tuesday 12th; from le Braye which is on the western side of Jersey. Time and Date has shown a high of 32c on that day which could well be the June record high. As the sign shows, slightly cooler there at 29c, taken around 5pm.

However the local forecast is for 37 next Monday, exceptional for a small island surrounded by cold water!

... to save water, we stopped using a garden hose-pipe, and instead emptied all of the washing-up water around our plum tree and expected it to survive, ... and in the autumn were rewarded by a bumper crop of plums!
