Can anybody please give some information on locations and diagrams of Pacers allocated to Heaton?

Simply: Any Northern diagram anywhere in the North east, Yorkshire or Cumbria!

It is a very fluid allocation pool as they could turn up on almost any service run by Northern. They seem to be almost interchangeable with the 156 pool but you are looking at Newcastle to Carlisle/Hexham, Newcastle to Middlesbrough, Darlington to Saltburn/Bishop Auckland, Newcastle to Morpeth etc for pacers.

I am unsure if there are any Middlesbrough/ Darlo – Durham - Newcastle runs in passenger service any more.

Basically any service on the North East not run by East Coast, Cross Country or TPE could have a pacer on it! ;)

Most certainly, two services in the morning peak northbound Saltburn - Newcastle via Darlington and one service late in the evening Newcastle - Middlesbrough via Darlington.

AFAIK there are also several services used to avoid an ECS run when transferring units between depots (presumably because of the different facilities/expertise at Heaton, Newton Heath and Neville Hill respectively) for exams, etc. For 142s and 156s the Tyne Valley is the usual route for this, as 156s in particular rarely venture further into Yorkshire than Sheffield or Huddersfield.

5A60 runs every night from Knaresborough -Heaton via York. That is usually pacers that have been working in the Leeds area all day.

Can't remember offhand if there used to be the same amount but there are three in the morning, one from Middlesbrough and the other two as you say from Saltburn.

The evening Newcastle - Middlesbrough now stops short at Darlington, has done so for a couple of years (during the week). There is still a one on a Saturday night which goes via Darlo.

Can also be 150 and 155s. A 150 was stabled there last week.

I didnt know that they still ran. A bit off my radar now

Well if you will go swanning off down south! ;)

Ah my mistake, the only time I've ever used it is on a Saturday (and it was quite a wild ride!).

Conversely I have, however, become and expert on the Bishop Auckland line! For instance last Saturday Northern ran a 4 car 156 train to service demand for the A4 event at Shildon!
And during the week too: as extra trains in the slots where there is normally a two-hour gap in the service.

Well done Northern!

I might be going totally doolally here, but wasn't there a decision not to operate pacers on the Middlesbrough-Whitby line - something to do with their not being regarded suitable for the crowds of schoolchildren who used to use it?

Could well be - although i have been down there on a 142 ( and a 143) and a 156.

5A60 is also used to move 153, 158 and occasionally the odd 144 when Neville Hill are busy.

The Whitby route is usually ran by class 156 units now. As has been mentioned I believe this was in part due to the fact that when on the school runs funded by the local council, a train where a 142 is coupled to something else means that you can't walk the entire length of the train.

Always seems to be a 156. Sometimes in summer with a 142.

Seems that about half the Nunthorpe/Middlesbrough via Durham coast are 156.

Whitby is always 156, should only be a 142 if the booked 156 has failed or short notice Summer strengthening.

142s used to work the summer Sunday Newcastle - Whitby and return service, indeed as recent as 2009 IIRC. However think these have been dropped in favour of 156s which are probably sitting spare at Heaton on Sundays.
