Hanson 56's

Hanson will soon be running tripple headed 56s on many freight workings, and are also investing in retired paxman valenta engines to replace the brush engines in some more 56s, to see what happens. These will be designated as class 56/9s. They will be painted in bright pink and will have the words froth, veg and ned written down the side in bold red letters. There will also be a Cross Country logo on the front, as XC are intending on using them on the Aberdeen-Penzance services (quadruple headed obviously) to drag voyagers, and are installing droplights in voyagers' doors to up their passenger numbers as bashers flock to their services to hear grid thrash. This is expected to happen by February.

aah they could just nick some every time they went past a DB or Fastline coal train and shove it in the firebox

as an alternative, they might be buying some deltics and fitting them with 5 cummins engines that they use in 156s, so that both deltic neds and unit neds can enjoy this creation - a 55/9. Killed two birds with one stone they did!

I gave you a sensible reply. Read it and it will give you the most reliable info on the HT 56 fleet so far posted on this forum.

Re-engined grids? For a start 56's use a 'tuned up' V16 version of a HST engine, made by Ruston Paxman, not Brush.

Replacing a 16RK3CT with a Val would reduce the power of a 56 to a pointless level.

I do love the idea of painting Neds etc on the sides though

haha now thats someone with a sense of humour (sulzer125) i would pay to see that in all fairness it sounds hilarious.. all the deltic veg would be like "DELTIC" and then it revs up to reveal unit thrash and then all the unit veg become to happy for the health and safety case..

They put a load of 37s back into store now that the RHTT season is over, so what do they need 56s for? They don't really haul any heavy trains.

I heard/read that DRS are getting some more 37's nothing about some more 56's.

They are completely different engines.

The 16RK3CT was a development of the 16 cyl English Electric engine fitted to e.g class 40s and class 50s. That is its family heritage.

The Valenta was an entirely different design, and entirely different size, and designed to run in a different rev range.

Class 56s DO have quite a lot in common with HSTs in terms of electronics and brakes, but not engines. The Napier SA-085 turbochargers on a 56 sound a bit like the single SA-084 on an HST, but that's it.

He's the one that accused us of "have you ever looked inside a 56" then showed complete dud gen on whats inside then called someone who owns and has pretty much rebuilt a 56 a "ned" which is almost the most ironic thing I've ever seen!!

XC scrapped that due to the fewer than expected number of people, due to the refurbished 56s not being hellfire enough :cry:
