I have a day in Hamburg just after Christmas. Anything interesting rail or transport wise?

Taking an ICE 4 service from Altona to Wuppertal next Saturday.

Yes, on the list.

The Elbe Tunnel is a new one for me.
There's also the overground section of the U-Bahn Rödingsmarkt-Landungsbrücken while you're in the immediate area.

At Landungsbrücken have a look at the ferries. One person operated boats, capacity 250 passengers, operating scheduled routes. Normal HVV tariff, so included in day tickets.

AKN lines, north of the city, are part rural(ish) railway, part S-Bahn but Eidelstedt-Ulzburg is currently shut for rebuilding.

S-Bahn and main bus routes are 10 minute interval all day so very useable.

AKN is a really unusual setup - a metro style but lower frequency semi rural operation with stations that look like mini U-Bahn stations and rolling stock that is a bit like a bogied Pacer (if they still have that). Worth seeing as a curiosity. The closest thing in feel to it in the UK is probably the outer bit of the Oldham Loop on Metrolink.

Interestingly some of these units are bimode (diesel and 1200VDC side contact third rail) and used to operate through services to Hamburg Hbf via the S-Bahn at peak times. The first bi mode units I ever heard of, dating from the 1990s if I recall.

Depends what floats your boat, a reasonable amount of loco haulage still around and Hamburg Harburg station good for watching freight.

Very nice near-original Hochbahn-architecture / atmosphere at Klosterstern, Baumwall and Mundsburg stations.

Agreed entirely.
Booked the Wunderland. I have booked for tomorrow although to buy a ticket online I also had to buy a VR experience which I am not really interested in. Not many slots to book but the ticket for the wunderland itself says all day. I am not sure what pre booking the wunderland ticket will achieve if its valid all day.

They usually expect you to turn up for time booked although no time limit once you're in. Turn up too early and they may turn you away.

I got in no problem, was not even a queue. It was busy though.
That's good, I know people have been turned away for arriving at the wrong time. Maybe it depends how busy it is at the time?

I sampled the AKN on two lines. I went from Elmshorn over to Ulstadt and from there I took the A2 south to the U1. Does anything apart from AKN stock run on the lines? Interesting that AKN ran through to central Hamburg.

I took one boat service as light was fading, service 73 that went across the river to industrial docks. It was cold and foggy and with light fading it was quite austere.
