So maybe the ballast and what looked like drainage work on the curve late last year did mean something, hope so !

It is members of parliment who saying things like this - do you ever believe what comes out of their mouths? Now if the news came from sources within Network Rail then I'm more likely to believe them. Wait and see eh!

I don't mind the politicians jumping on the band wagon and taking all the credit, but when Weaver to Wavertree and Frodsham junction are not re-signalled, and the line re-laid with service running by Dec 2016. What will they say then????

I was under the impression that the scheme is reliant on the resignalling programme between Wavertree Jctn and Weaver Jctn so surely this is a factor too?

That's what I meant by the NR CP5 plan.
There are recent references to remodelling/resignalling at Lime St, but it's all very quiet on the Edge Hill-Weaver Jn work.
There's no mention of this project in the Hendy report or its small print, let alone the Halton Curve add-on.

My understanding was Merseytravel would sponsor its operation for the first three years but then yes it would either have to be picked up by a ToC Dft take over sponsoring it.

As I understand these were drainage works and not related to the road bridge scheme.
I am sure the Curve will reopen properly but the timescales that these politicians speak of are dependent on other infrastructure projects being completed and as had already been mentioned we do not know if these other projects are planned in to CP5.

As mentioned in other threads on Liverpool improvements, latest reports are now May 2018 for a service over the chord. So it looks like Weaver - Wavertree Resignallng has got a definite date for completion before this??
Has anyone got inside information on this scheme? will Frodsham Junction signalbox be retained?

The info said 5 boxes to go , presumably thats Halton, Runcorn, Ditton, Speke and Allerton if its weaver-wavertree

Indeed that is correct. Runcorn box isnt demolished as its grade 2 listed, Ditton is meant to stay too. Allerton, Speke and Garston October 17 and Ditton plus Halewood, Runcorn and Halton May 18.

Halewood? That is a new one on me! I assume you mean replacing "Hunts Cross" which is that brick almost windowless building near to the station? Likewise "Garston" now I am puzzled as there were two boxes, 1) Garston Church Road and 2) Garston Junction - both have long gone with latter having been almost burnt down! I will have to assume, you are referring to something in that area but clearly I've missed or not aware of something? Regardless, thank you for the 2018 closure dates, if it all goes to plan. :)

Some strange info in that document Planner! Garston has been gone over 10 years! Both were burnt down. Can't see Hunts Cross going until there's actual work on the LSP DC lines turn-back happening.

Ah, makes more sense then. Would seem a waste of a good building to flatten Ditton when it's only been open 15-16 years. Guess it'll perform a similar function to the old Coventry and Bletchley boxes.

The original question was about the other end of the line - Frodsham Jn.
If the junction is being upgraded and modernised you would expect it to be controlled by new kit, eg from Norton, only 2 miles east.
I can't see them reinstating semaphores at Frodsham Jn.
It's probably too much to expect Chester-Warrington to be resignalled at the same time.

It probably will for now. Would make more sense to get rid when they resignal the line from Acton grange to Chester.

You could install a colour light controlled by Frodsham Junction. Or even do away with the box as part of the re-signalling.

Not that anyone will be looking to save money, but I bet the lever frame at Frodsham still has the mechanical locking in it for the junction and signals, just never been recovered.
If its the single line chord option then it would need alteration. Of course it could be left as a double junction at Frodsham, and double line to Halton with a new modern single lead that splits into 2 on the chord. That would allow trains to pass each other and give more flexibility than a loop.
A new interlocking could be controlled from Warrington as Norton (Runcorn East) is only plain line and could be replaced by a few automatic signals.
The original plans for Warrington PSB included extending down the Chester line and a blank panel was installed to cover this option, that was back in 1972!
