GWR website and app being usless since the update

Since GWR did an update around March, the website and app have turned into a mess! I cannot log into my account because it thinks my email address is invalid. The only way in is resetting the password which only logs me in for one session and then I get logged out. My friend is trying to do a refund and it's a total pain. What did GWR do and what can they do to fix the website ?

The old app used to log me out randomly every few weeks. Now I have to log in (almost) every time. As far as I can see there's no way to authenticate with a fingerprint as many modern apps allow.

I wonder if it's the same as SWR use? I gave up with their app and now use Trainline for tickets bought on the day (I don't use it for booking in advance due to fees) on my phone because I got fed up of it constantly logging me out and also telling me that when I tried to log in my password was wrong and I had to reset it. I also usually had to enter a lot of details like postal address when buying a ticket, which Trainline don't ask for. I know trainline gets a bad press on here but if you only use it to buy tickets on the day (so you don't pay their fees) it seems to work much better than TOC apps.

Unless this is still possible but not obvious, I can't find a way to book multiple tickets in one booking beyond one return journey. This makes split ticketing difficult to book (if like me you don't want the middleman taking a share of your saving).

To be honest, when "manually" splitting (if I don't already know the splits/feel like researching them manually, I will normally use a splitting site) I tend to write down/print off a list of all the tickets I need and then pop to my local ticket office.

The staff there have always been happy to be handed the list and do all the tickets in one go (and through reservations for the whole journey, which avoids ending up with a massive number of reservation slips and playing musical chairs or having to fiddle around with seat selector tools).

You could book the tickets, individually, with the site you use for research so as to help finance the continued operation of such a site through the normal commission. Researching without buying is expensive for sites like Trainsplit.

Compared to mixing desk version on old site the new ticket buying process is a complete joke.

I rarely bother with the GWR app nowadays. My main usage for it was buying train tickets on my way into work when I could commute by rail but I can't commute that way now because my workplace moved so I now travel by car. I could get the bus to work but that would take 3 times longer if it turned up.

For tickets I use TrainPal which has given me some quite decent reductions on occasion (and has never logged me out automatically) but if travelling from a mainline station I now have a website called Tiger bookmarked for arrivals and departures: it is used on the wall-mounted platform displays - the ones which show the railway layouts - such as at Bristol Parkway, for example, and can be found at https://tiger.worldline.global/home. Tiger doesn't cover each and every single station though so the operator's app sometimes still proves useful.

Interesting for me, the app is now much much more reliable than what it was before the change. Previously I had the constant being logged out problem but that doesn't happen anymore!

I agree that, after a very dodgy update that led to me no longer using it, the app has now settled down.

One quirk that hasn't gone away is the app insisting on me confirming my home address before processing a Google Pay transaction.
