Well if the 802s really are so much quicker on electric than 800s this is not a desirable situation seeing as 802s generally leave Paddington at xx03 past each hour with an 800 leaving at xx00. No wonder we are catching them up. I try to leave Paddington a little slower in order not to catch up the Bristol in front.

That’s because the xx00 Bristol always catches up with the xw50 Oxford that stops at Slough. No point getting straight up to 125 only to drop the anchors at Langley.

I consider the main difference between the 802s and 800 is on diesel, not electric. 800 will lose 30s - 60s on every acceleration. More noticeable where line speed is high e.g. westbound from Taunton. 802 may just beat an HST into Whiteball Tunnel, but both leave the 800 way way behind.

I understand from Clarence Yard posting on wnxx forum that 800 performance on diesel is being looked at - presumably to allow higher output over a greater part of the speed range?
Are any 802s regularly booked over the Cotswold line as I'd like to do some comparisons as an 802 could regain say 5 minutes if late at Worcester - which could be useful.

802 acceleration on electric is very impressive. Very first public run from Penzance to Paddington on 20 Aug left Reading a few minutes late and was a whole minute quicker out to Twyford than the previous week's HST and the gap widened further until the HST reached max speed. But the overall gain over my best 800 on electric was about 15s.

Believe there was another Hitachi failure yesterday... A sense of humour failure from Hitachi people at the “Golden Spanners” awards after Roger Ford pointed out that Pacers are more reliable.
He points this out every month in Modern Railways. In fact, of the new generation trains only the 707 beats the Pacer. The lamentable 345 is bottom of the pile.

No regular 802 duties yet, though 802101 has made an occasional appearance. The only run I have had on it was on the 16.22 Paddington to Great Malvern (I got on at Reading) in place of a five-car 800, so not exactly the right service to sample performance capabilities past Oxford, though a clear run through the Didcot junctions and cancellation of the preceding stopping Didcot-Oxford Turbo meant it did Reading-Oxford in just over 20 minutes - then had to stand for 10 minutes waiting for departure time at 17.25.

802101 is also the only 802 I have seen on Cotswold duties on 12.21(twice) and 17.52(once), on all three occasions deputising for an 800/3. The only regular turn for an 802 to Oxford has been the 0950 Paddington - Oxford and 1201 Oxford - Paddington but that is of no use for monitoring Oxford - Worcester performance.

That is crazy...surely there should be enough battery power to last at least 10 minutes!! What happens if the OLE power is discharged without advanced warning and time to switch to diesel?
I can't speak for the 800s specifically, but on all modern stock I've travelled on where power has been lost, the lighting switches to emergency after 30-60 seconds or so, basically the minimum that's long enough that a fault has occurred, and it isn't just traversal of a neutral section. That isn't no lighting, I imagine the emergency lights would last several hours, but there are only a small number of them, it is not a pleasant environment to be in if it's dark outside. I haven't heard anything to suggest 800s differ from the norm in that regard. After all, you wouldn't want full lighting depleting the duration for which emergency lighting can be used!

As well he should. I know reliability isn't the reason people want the Pacers withdrawn but they don't score that well anyway, new stock shouldn't really be considered 'bedded in' until it is reliably surpassing those figures by considerable margin.

The following graph illustrates the difference between 800 and 802's in electric mode.. 802's time from rest to 6 miles was 20 seconds quicker in this case!! :) 802 in red, 800 in blue.Screen Shot 2018-11-25 at 11.12.25.png

I was once on a Class 360 that was stopped North of Chelmsford after a tree feel onto the line. Power had to be discharged. After 20 minutes - the batteries completely failed - no lights, no power doors, no toilets, no heating. It was a disgraceful situation - and i felt very strongly after that - that the train should have had at least its own emergency generator - or battery packs able to last at least an hour. In the end we were stuck longer than this.

Only 2 small minor problems to report yesterday. One of the 802's suffered a 'non working outside light' which caused a delay departing Chippenham. And then a 'door' problem at BTM partially caused a 23 minute late departure. We would have been 15 min late away due to the driver turning up late. At least the door problem did not reoccur during the journey. Biggest issue after that was losing path. Late running services at Swindon caused congestion as there were not enough platforms available and at one point three trains were waiting for a platform eastbound. Operationally the station layout is not the best when things go wrong. A third mainline platform would be helpful. Maybe they should have created an island platform between the up and down mains instead. But that subject is for another thread!!

Exactly - please try to delay til xx:04, no make it xx:05. I will tell you why - xx;00 is catching up the xx:52 to Moreton - Marsh by Maidenhead. The xx:52 makes a Slough stop - as I experienced yesterday. Fortunately TVSC managed to route him into 8 at Reading and we were quickly routed into 9 landing in just over 23 mins despite slowing for signals. So really the XX;00 should leave by xx:01, and probably the xx;03 should be leaving at xx;05. Because they are all catching each other up! Lol!
I have ridden the xx;52 as well - and they don't hang about - completing the scheduled 13/14 minute run in close to 11.5 minutes. So even with that arriving 2 early - it still delays the xx;00. This is all a consequence of the schedule being timed for 24 mins plus 1 min recovery when we all know the 800's will do it easily in 22 to 23 minutes without even being driven flat out.
I wish the signallers would open up the platform starter at Reading to green which would allow most of the inbound services to come in on greens rather than crawling in on a single yellow. But that is an operational issue and prob for another thread.

Remember, the timetable is still for HST's, so the IET's performance isn't taken into consideration yet.

I agree about the platform starter idea, but if the train has an extended dwell, which is fairly common at Reading, or if the signal needs to be pulled for whatever reason, the signaller doesn't want to be the one to snarl up the interlocking for 2 minutes, or however long the time-out is at TVSC.

As well as that, GWR wouldn't appreciate their drivers entering the platform at a high speed, defensive driving techniques and all that ;)

Reading uses TRTS plungers at every platform; if the staff are on their toes, they hit the plunger the moment the train stops in the platform, especially for the IET's.

I thought the core concept of the specified "get you home" self power mode of the 800's was so that in the event of OLE failure the comfort and lighting could remain and the train could self rescue. Under normal circumstances how long does engine start up take? I assume to allow for warming it can't be more than 10 minutes but a "cold" start could and should be possible in a couple of minutes at the cost taking cycle life out of the powerpack.

The planned switch overs from electric to diesel or vice versa seem to see the power sockets and AC switch off for a about a minute, internal lighting is unaffected during, so I'd assume the batteries are specified for at least a couple of minutes power. It would be a fairly big oversight if the batteries could not provide power for long enough to allow for unplanned engine starts.

ATP is quite aggressive approaching Reading on the new layout - I'm off work injured at present so don't have access to the tables but IIRC the release speed is 25 or 30 for the starting signals for the 4 "mainline" platforms (8-11) - perhaps @Mintona or @irish_rail can confirm - which is generally a little slower than you'd enter such a long platform with an HST or IET if observed driving style approaching the likes of Swindon or Didcot on clear signals is anything to go by.

On that basis there's maybe a little performance to be gained coming in with the starter off, but not masses.

That is confusing because the main lines have a 95mph speed limit through the station. So does that mean non-stop trains have to slow to 25mph before the starter will clear? Even GWRs record attempt came in on a green. It does save at least 30secs. Not that a stopping service will hit the east end if the platform more than 35mph anyway.

I believe it means that if the signal is red, the ATP will release from monitoring the trains approach to the signal at 25mph, IIRC the basics of the system.

Platform 8 (down) - 20
Platform 9 (down) - 25
Platform 10 (up) - 10
Platform 11 (up) - 25

It’s all to do with the positioning of the next conflict zone after the signal.

Quite happy to hit Didcot at around 50 and Swindon at 40-45 on a dry day with good railhead conditions and unrestrictive signals.

My fastest thro RDG so far on the 19.12 from PAD is 90. Usually only possible if it is delayed. And the 19.00 BRI, 19.03 PLY and 19.06 Bedwyn can usually be relied on to co-operate.

PAD = Paddington
RDG = Reading
PLY = Plymouth.

I’ve not driven 800s for very long so still getting used to them to some extent. HSTs a bit longer and I know the limits, so won’t push them, but the platforms at Swindon and Didcot are really rather long.

As soon as there’s some drizzle though 30 is plenty at the ramps, goes for pretty much anywhere.

I cannot remember being aboard any train hitting the ramps at those speeds - even in good dry conditions. But yes i would agree that stops in general seem to be quicker aboard HST's. As you say - probably people are still getting used to the 800's - even though the brake is reported to be very good.

Bear in mind the power car is that much further forward with the brake in it will have slowed down more by the time the leading carriage is alongside the platform.

When I was training I was told that hitting Didcot at 60 used to be normal and at 70 wasn’t all that unusual. Different times though, I wouldn’t want to be above 50 at the ramp these days.

Platform 7 at reading need to be doing 10mph half way down the platform. Bloody pain in the arse. ATP can be as much of a hindrance as a help

We tend to hit platforms harder with HSTs I guess partly because we are all used to them. But also a fast smooth stop is easier on a HST whereas on an IET the stop tends to feel less smooth when done at speed but this may just be whilst we all get used to them.

The HST fast smooth stop is much more apparent with the ‘old hands’ and Drivers who cut their driving teeth on HST or Loco’s. Quite a few of the Drivers that transferred from DMU to HST try far too much to feather the brakes - probably because their traction training doesn’t explain how the brake system works. Their was always a rise in below average brake reports when a batch of converts were out, inevitably all reported at low speed stopping in a station, they just had to get used to a brake pipe system rather than a DMU type brake.

No doubts after a bit more handling, the feel of the 80x will become second nature.

One question, as most HST brakes had a wide ranging feel, with application rates and notches needing varying from set to set, even from end to end, how does the 80x compare, are the sets more consistent in feel?

Class 802 no 802004 failed at Devonport on the 2C48 1557 Plymouth to Penzance service with a brake related fault. 1A93 1400 Penzance to Paddington ( formed 2 x 802) turned round at Newton Abbot and sent west as a rescue train.

800023 and 800029 in multiple just departed Reading on diesel so they must still be restricted
