Yes, my mistake. I meant T27 and T28. I saw 800014 outside, and was actually expecting that to be the unit that would be delivered, whereas in fact 800015 was the unit that left Newton Aycliffe on Friday evening. I remember seeing 800027 inside the cab I sat in, so that clears it up.

Is the 9 car set at Hitachi Newton Aycliffe a Class 801? If not, then why aren't GWR having it any longer?

The seats aren't hard, but they aren't as comfy as I would have hoped.

Another path is in system for Tuesday for a delivery, maybe 014.

The 9 car is confirmed as 801201 which is now VTECs electric set. Originally this would of been for GWR, but since the problems with the Wiring of the line and there decision to have all there trains as bi-mode, this is now destined for Virgin. This had already been built in Japan before decision to go all bi-mode was made.

The 9car set in the yard will now be 801201 for VTEC.

Superb, thanks for that. Happy to now have seen a Class 801, didn't think I would with it being early days for Virgin. Wonder where they will send 800014 if it leaves on Tuesday? Only path in place is to Doncaster Carr IEP Depot, so maybe they will keep it there. The attemps over this weekend to get 800015 to Stoke Gifford never went ahead, possibly due to the engineering works around Swindon. The RTT page for North Pole IEP Depot is very quiet this week, absolutely nothing Monday to Friday.

Reading was very busy with 800s lunchtime.

800002+800001? arrives at 5X32 and leaves as 5X33 on a Paddington - Reading -
Paddington. In between 5X10 passes through as a single white 800 on a North Pole to Stoke Gifford.

To top that a pair of 700s visited too to/from Staines at the same time.

Seems the headline news about the first East Coast sets under assembly was a little premature, with one unit already assembled about two years ago. I don't know why anyone's so excited to see it. It's really just an 800 with four engines missing (does anyone know which carriage the single diesel engine is under?). I was under the impression that an 801 could be converted to bi-mode by adding engines. Obviously not in this case.

Motor coaches are different to trailer coaches, so they can't be converted to bi-mode easily; the motor coaches are designed to be converted to trailer coaches by having the motors removed, though. (I believe that's right; I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!)

[Edit: I guess motor coach is really the wrong term here, given there's no relationship between diesel engine and electric motors. Uh.]

It's easier than you think as all the equipment like APS etc is still there just minus the mtu engine units themselves and they are just bolted on underneath.

I thought they had a different floor, with a very very slight rise over the engine?

Happy to be corrected, but I think it's been established that all intermediate vehicles have that higher floor.

Yes there is a difference in height, however unless you knew there was a 'slight' ramp, you wouldn't know it was there.

All saloons are the same as each other. Only DPT is lower and that's only interior because of the pan.

Out of curiosity, what knowledge do people on here have of the 80x's?

I've been on one of the test runs. My impression is that a lot of people are going to bang their heads on the overhead luggage racks which are exceptionally low.

I found luggage racks no problem, im 6ft 4, i had more of an issue height wise in the vestibule ends.

I think that the overhead luggage storage has to be the size to take the carry on cases for most of the airlines.

Are these 800s due to be trialled with passengers before they formally enter service?

When they start in passenger service then they'll probably start on a some unaccounted additional off peak service, or something similar.

If you mean will they be tested with passengers so any feedback can be rectified then the answer's no. Imagine doing this with the 709s - they'd have to go back for new seats, tables, more litter bins etc.
