Nah, let's go with Flanders and Swann's anthem of which the first two lines are:

NB. This post is completely tongue in cheek so please don't bother with the "outraged" posts.
how about Johnny Cash: "I hear the train a-coming..."?

This thread is supposed to be about Class 800 not announcements on European rolling stock or at stations. New thread time perhaps?

Definitely.
In 800-related news, 800314 has now made it to the Western; it was stabled at North Pole this afternoon.

10 car IETs have now been labelled a no go area for Swindon- Cheltenham now due to all sorts of issues. Apparently there is now one with the sidings at Cheltenham.

Now? They weren’t cleared to operate to Cheltenham in the first place; as has been mentioned numerous times on this thread.

I noticed poor staff struggling a little with the 10 car formation of the 14:00 PNZ - PAD this afternoon. The train was swarming with GWR staff and Hitachi technicians. Did they know something we don`t? Irate people were trying to find bike spaces, first class and on top of this the dreaded reservations displays went down just as we left Penzance. Presumably a supervisor was talking to a group of about 5 saying there are so many things they have to get their heads around and indeed he said some staff are still struggling on the Bristol and South Wales services. Not a dig at staff as they were all very professional and I suppose this is what comes of nay on 40 years of HST routine suddenly interrupted. It`s then that you realise how big the boots the IET has to fill of it`s predecessor.

Generally the 802`s are a nice train and do seem faster when scooting away from stations and the extra room so badly needed on busy trains looks to have been almost solved. It wasn`t a particularly busy service early on so now it seems to make sense to split many 10 car services presumably at Plymouth, certainly at quieter parts of the year. Something I didn`t agree with earlier.

According to the Network Rail Enhancements Delivery Plan, the platforms at Cheltenham are being extended for 10 car IEP operation.

It and 800315 have definitely been at North Pole before, I saw them there a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully the fact it is back means 314 is imminent into service now.

Yes they were, and that was the original plan before 9car were changed to bimode.

So basically what we are saying is that with the 9 cars now being bi-mode, they will scrap the planned use of 10 cars on the Cheltenhams and use 9 cars (or occasionally 5 cars)?

Thanks for your honesty.

Whenever this came up early on there was certainly a number of people who would have agreed with you original position.

I think that many of them thought that it would only be 5 coach units West of Plymouth and hadn't taken on board about the increase in frequency. Which at the very least would have lead to an increase in capacity of at least 20% (assuming only 5 coach units on a 2 tph basis), but probably a larger increase with a few 9/10 coach trains.

Had a short trip Thursday on 1G11 to Stonehouse. I had walked onto a path which runs alongside the railway but at a lower level. As the 9 car unit pulled away I could hear a very loud noise which sounded like a lot of compressed air being ejected. Was this some kind of pop off valve?

Also, why do the 180's and 800's have squeeling breaks?

Having been on several IETs between Swansea and Paddington, and having lived in Wales for nearly two decades... Yep. I was able to hear the Welsh twang straight away. I chuckled at it, and thought it was only for the PAD-SWA line. I'll be a lot happier if the same voice is employed across the UK. I like her voice! :D
I think she says certain places oddly - Carmarthen is a said "Camaaarfen", and Cardiff Central is "sen-trul".

The doors are automatically pressure sealed above a certain speed (3mph?) - the noise was probably the seals inflating, it can be quite a sharp noise at times.

Brake Squeal will be down to what pad material is used. Both the 180s and 800s use a form of Dynamic braking as their primary means of slowing down (Hydrodynamic braking on the 180s, Rheostatic/Regenerative braking on the 800s) with disc brakes supplementing at low speed and in emergency braking. The pad material thus has to be sturdy enough to cope with infrequent, high-energy use.

Out of interest stemming from this post, why were the 80x trains ordered without level boarding?
Unless it really is the DfT just not thinking, or going along with what it's been before?
I just think there must be a particular reason rather than someone just not thinking about it.

When it goes hourly they will run five car units probably with a 9car in the mix as well. Peak times will be all 9cars. Sunday is also going hourly apparently.

5cars will also be used on the Coltswoods and some Bristol services when it goes 4tph.

I think that's probably what it is, but don't forget there's also the hilariously loud air-operated windscreen wipers...

Also sounds like she's trying to say London weird. Like "Lundain Paddington". XD Which is perilously close to the welsh spelling, "Llundain"

I've just seen a nine car in Cheltenham sidings - there appears to be plenty of space for a ten car (if space is the issue).

Because no one is planning to rebuild or alter every platform on the entire GW network (let alone the rest of the railway) to a standard height to fit the trains? Although that’s what further posts in that thread suggest ought to be done, it isn’t ever likely to be affordable.

The Swiss did. Merseyrail are doing. No doubt GA will do at least some.

That is an excuse.

Two distinct discussions going on here, why aren't 800/1/2s low floor, and why wasn't the IEP specified to be low floor.

For the first point, a couple of reasons spring to mind: firstly the difficulty of having low enough floors and fitting the engines underneath. As it is, they have a (slight) ramp up from the vestibules to the saloon to fit the engine underneath - lower the floor height at the door and you need to make that ramp steeper or longer, neither of which are any good. Secondly being a 140mph capable design, the bigger the wheels the better. In order to achieve a low floor you'd need smaller wheels (or try to parcel them underneath bits of the interior as you have on low floor trams) and motors that run at higher speeds, which are more expensive.Thirdly, with the position of the doors relative to the wheelsets, they would be very narrow at floor level to enable level floors, meaning a large horizontal gap that would need to be filled with ramps.

As for the second discussion quite simply the DfT didnt see a need for low floors. There shouldn't be any technical reason to prevent it - an hst style power car and coachws was one of the bids and would have been capable of being low floor - but it would have required more infrastructure work as noted and the benefit of having level boarding would have to be pitched against the cost of rebuilding all platforms (and introducing non standard stuff, if you make the high speed stuff level with low platforms, you then have massive steps up to other stock that wasn't designed to be level to the platforms)

A point of clarification. There is no ramp between vestibule and saloon, it is between the coach and the corridor connection in the higher floor coaches only.

As for wheel size, partial low floor would deal with that. You only need the bit with wheelchair accommodation as low floor (though all of it is preferable).

Indeed. The voice artist for the Great Western Railway IETs is Janine Cooper-Marshall, a voice artist from the South Wales area.

Quick question about East Coast 800s. Will they be using the bounds green depot, as per the Class 91/MK 4 fleet?

Occasionally see one in the sidings by hornsey, but never at bounds green.

Eventually yes. For the initial period LNER Azumas will be based solely at Doncaster Carr IEP Depot, which of course, being new, has no existing fleet to maintain. As these displace HSTs and Mark 4 sets, Craigentinny and Bounds Green will have capacity freed up to take on 80x work.

Another point of note is that the Hull Trains 802 fleet will be based at Bounds Green. I seem to recall the Transpennine 802 fleet will be based at Doncaster.

Finally got mt first jolly out on a pair of 802's (005/006) on the delayed service between Par-Penzance-Bodmin this afternoon, few things I've noted, the PIS was very quiet in one unit, struggled to hear it over background chatter and engine noise which is an issue when most stations only take the front unit plus one or two cars from the second, whereas in the other unit it was very easy to hear (was admittedly one without an engine in.) the other thing of note was that other than the slope between carriages 1-2/4-5 there was also a mark temperature difference between carriages with and without engines underneath. Other than those two minor gripes I think I can honestly say that it will be a good addition to the GWR fleet.

You can see why really! If Hitachi have delivered a product that meet the standards they were told would be sufficient to have Network Rail now move the goal posts is going to rankle.
Meeting EMC standards depends on the environment the testing is done in. It might meet the test requirements in a factory test area (may be even with the equipment on a static load bank but not on real railway lines where the environment is much more complex.)

Interestingly other stock doesn't seem to cause problems in the same location.
