Was this the first solo ex-C2C 387 from Paddington? 4-car service to Theale.

387306 looks like it’s on a diagram all day.
No, 387301 was reported going to Paddington back in December. Not 387306 though.

387306 was certainly on the 1607 departure and was photographed running into Reading from London. Ran through (RTT says) to the 2007 departure from Paddington after which the shuttles ran only from Reading. The trains used the up loop platform at Theale again.

387301 + 387155 were on the 19:37 Paddington to Reading this evening. Does this mean that the software on the 387/3s has been updated so they can work with the 387/1s?

Yes, software was infact updated several weeks ago; however there was paperwork to be signed off etc before they were authorised for “free use”

That authorisation came through at 1600 this afternoon; and partly in reaction to earlier disruption, was put to good use immediately, with 387301 attaching to the 1759 Newbury - Paddington to correct an earlier short formation.

I can presume that they won’t be returning to c2c then if that’s the case?

That’s good to see.

The other 3 387/3s have been sitting at Shoeburyness CS for a while not seeing any action.

Nothing has been announced regarding the long term future of the /3 units

On paper their lease to GWR ends in June 2022. Beyond that there’s half a dozen versions of what might happen.

Fair enough. As noted above, the remaining 3 have been OOU since February, and with the first 720s being built for c2c I can imagine it won’t be long until something concrete is announced.

The C2C units are now diagrammed as per standard GWR 387s following a software upgrade - 387302 working in tandem with 387150 this evening, for example.

Strictly they lost official separate diagrams in December, and the 3 units have just been used on standard GWR 387 diagrams that their restrictions permitted - ostensibly Newburys, but they did make forays to Paddington as 4 cars occasionally, most recently last Saturday.

Posts 34/35 detail those former restrictions being lifted, now they can be operated as if they were part of the standard GWR fleet. Today saw 1 of the sets on its traditional Newbury work; the other 2 as part of pairs on Didcot stoppers.

Next step will be to put one on Cardiffs…

GWR could use all the 387s they can get right now. Several services have or are being put up back to 12-cars (previously temporarily 8-cars) as the loadings on particular trains already have started to justify it.
