Well the headcode has a 'B' on it, which I think means freight, so that narrows it to a loco. By the looks of it, the train has quite a round profile so that makes me think 2x or 3x series. Class 28?

Afraid not, the Metrovick Co-bos didn’t have headcode boxes, they had indicator discs.
I’d be careful with your reasoning on headcodes as well: After the practice of displaying headcodes publicly was abandoned (1971 perhaps?), any old arrangement of numbers and letters could be seen carried before the headcode boxes were plated over (Although displaying “0000” was the favoured practice). Not to mention the possibilities that preservation has brought along since…
Additionally, the “B” code could mean anything, freight trains were identified as classes 5 to 8 (Class 9 I think as well for particularly slow, unfitted freight trains) which was denoted by the first digit of the headcode.
Mail trains in this day and age are class 1, as they have priority over many other trains to ensure they run to time. I don't know if this has always been the case, and I presume that newspaper trains were lower down the classifications.
Well I have very little knowledge of headcodes, being from a world of turbostars and sprinters

It isn’t a 116 but you’re on the right track now.
That's not really an excuse as trains still have them, they just aren't displayed anymore
I think a 1st Gen DMU is a good shout so 115?
