Used to go out for unusual stuff hauling passenger trains. Had quite a few 20s. Did not particularly do large amount of duff bashing but every Saturday in the summer of 1990 one came through my local station. RfD 47s on passenger trains were quite unusual at the time.

Too early for clues on this one yet.

Is the correct answer.

Blythe Bridge to Blackpool Relief train. The other picture of the 20s the other day is a couple of days earlier. If I was in late turn I would get up at 04:30 go to Blythe Bridge cover the Blythe Bridge to Llandudno to Stoke and then Stoke to Blackpool and back for late turn. If I was early turn I would go to work then go to Blackpool for the train to Crewe.

Happy Days......

Is that definately Preston, looks exactly like the west end of Carlisle!

Yep. I got off and went to work. Give me a couple of minutes and I will post the uncropped image. What is unusual is the train is in Platform 2 but heading north,

Ducking the issue there I'm afraid. You know as well as I do that back then when it mattered duff bashing was not something anyone would ever have admitted to. I doubt modern enthusiasts would be able to believe the scorn in which this activity was held, after all, what is the modern equivalent of a duff (although possibly now everything is a 'duff', and maybe that's why some people these days seem to think there's nothing wrong with liking 'em)? Even the passage of time has not moderated my views on duffs, and I have almost no fond memories of them. And it's not as though I'm some sort of doctrinaire English Electric man, as many duff-haters are: 33s were right up there for me (although the less said about Peaks the better TBF).

It may be ducking the issue. I has never really bothered me what was on the front of the train. I just enjoy visiting unusual part of the network and travelling on unusual traction. There is no modern equivelent of 47s as virtually everything is units these days.

I know some people who used to spend every Saturday travelling between Manchester Vic and Stalybridge and had every peak for haulage. This is my idea of torture.

Nowadays it is just good to travel on a loco hauled train.

I would not particularly head for a 47 hauled tour these days 37s a different matter.

So it is. The way you cropped it looked exactly like Carlisle, even down to the signal and OHLE.

That's why I did it.

Night folks.

I will be unable to post pictures until Sunday evening being away and no access to photo collection. I may look in from my travels particularly of the sleeper tomorrow night, should I get any right feel free to step in and take the floor as mobile signal comes and goes. You do not need to wait for me to offer the open floor.

AKA Spoon Goons

More importantly anyone posting a picture.

Who got the last one right?

Back in the day nothing was more important than outing the duff bashers.....

Last year when I was picking up a class 37 tour at York I took my lads to stay with my parents for the day and the younger one (aged 5 at the time) asked my dad "Grandad, are you a duff basher?".
