I think ml may be going by the earliest they would have to inform you for notice purposes if you were to start in October. However this would only be if there was actually a course in October ( it has only been said that they will be from October onwards, this could mean anytime after October, we all know there is a shortage of instructors and space to run courses) , that if there were a course it would be for your specific depot and that you would be one of the ones out of several people also wanting that depot to be selected. Best thing to do while in a talent pool, even though we know there are courses becoming available from sometime around October is just to get on with your normal day to day life because always waiting for that letter/phonecall just makes the whole process feel longer.

Would be fantastic hearing that we all have courses in Oct or shortly after though :)

for those that have done our medicals does that mean our courses will be sooner than those who havent yet completed their medicals? I ask as i was under the impression companies wouldnt offer you a position unless they knew you were medically fit and ready to go?

Every TOC seems to run their talent pool slightly differently, it is unusual that they would put us through Medicals if we were not to be placed on a course, but with talent pools nothing is guaranteed, I don't mean to be negative there, we all know their is courses coming up but will we all be used? Nobody can say for definate, only speculate. This is why it's best not to mull over every detail of what had happened so far. Everyone has been told the same thing, there are courses and we will be allocated a place when available. Yes I do think people with Medicals would be up first as we know from this forum that other people have not had them after passing the DMI as these people will most likely be on next years courses. Saying this I can't see a TOC leaving a talent pool completely empty either, regardless of what has been said about being picked in order of completing the assessments, if it comes down to it and they don't have enough places they will use the people who have scored highest.

Good luck to all of you waiting in the talent pool. Some info from the GN side. There are now portacabins installed at letchworth C/S to accommodate as many trainee courses as possible to run alongside those at Hornsey. There are DI courses to be run soon and the latest batch of practical handlers are beginning to pass out, freeing up current DI's. The scale of recruitment has never been this large before so the logistics of getting all the successful applicants through is a work in process but they are getting there. With the planned new route (TL project) and traction types (700/377) the need for new drivers is high so hopefully all that are in the talent pool will get to hear something sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately I do not know any more than anyone else I was just being hopeful as they did indicate they would know future dates by now

There are enough people with medicals to fill several courses for every depot so logically they will be placed first

The company will surely not want to put more people through medicals until the majority with medicals have been placed on courses

A number of people have been told a number of times they will certainly be placed on courses even those who have not yet had medicals with dates likely to be oct - March (first quarter next year)

They did say they will run 24 training courses this year I believe there are many more to come

There may be a situation where they re advertise to keep the talent pool numbers up but everyone who has had a medical is surely a lock.

Thank you very much most encouraging

I also understand three bridges may open as a training academy?

I have no info for three bridges other than it will be a large depot. With the new facilities it is entirely possible there will be an academy there and it would make total sense. The need for drivers there is also large so again a TA would make sense.

I think 99 was a number mentioned but perhaps it will be larger than that. I imagine the southern guards at Barnham brighton Horsham and Redhill will have their eyes on it but not sure they have a priority as thameslink seems to be remaining quite separate to southern . It seems to be a case of waiting to see how many qualifieds relocate there before working out trainee numbers

I guess it really does depend on the qualified transfers. There was not much interest from GN but it probably would depend on where people live etc. also type of work, diagrams etc are still a bit unknown.

Thanks for the info chap, I'm awaiting a GN posting so that's encouraging news :)

Thanks very much for the info
With these new training facilities there could potentially be say five courses planned then before the end of the year

8x5= 40 so that would use a lot up from the pool and that is probably the number of those who have had medicals

Of course some depots must have a greater requirement.

Actual numbers I'm not sure of, only that they plan to run more courses. There are already a lot of trainees at various stages (something like 6 courses on GN X? On TL) and the training facilities at letchworth could well be temporary to ease the load at Hornsey whilst work is carried out. There are more training managers now though and I'm guessing they wouldn't have taken the job if it was a short term thing. From what I can tell training will be at this level for the remainder of this and through next year. Current qualified drivers will have to be released to start their training soon too, creating even more of a need for trainees. And as you say depot requirements will vary, for eg KX is always down on numbers. With crossrail recruiting too, some current drivers will leave GTR again creating more need. It's like one big merry go round :D

Concerning the Three Bridges role, they seem almost impossible to get hold of. There is no recruitment contact on the ad (unlike most of the other ads) and besides, the email addresses of any other recruitment managers with the company don't seem to accept external email.

I've only just found a general recruitment email, gtr.recruitment@gtrailway.com (which was listed on here but not on the official website), I've received an auto-reply saying they'll get back to me within 48 hours, I just hope the role is still open then (wouldn't be surprised if it is closed).

If anyone has a quicker way of getting in touch with them, can you please drop me a PM? Would be a shame to miss out on an interview or role because of a confusing questionnaire at the start of the process.

RE Receiving a start date

In what format does this happen? Letter, e-mail or phone call ?

Obviously after this a contract comes thru the post, just wondered how people heard about their start dates

...can't be too long now for start dates for those who have passed medicals

Presumably those who have passed medicals will be the first to be allocated dates

You should make this your forum signature, save typing it so much ;)
