No-one really knows what the pass mark is but just before I done it for real I was hitting around a total of 1400 cells with none incorrect and between 0 -2 omissions.
If I was to offer any advice it would be to concentrate on accuracy, you'll find quantity will increase with practise

Slow down until you can consistently get no errors or you run the risk of failing the test

hi Guys,

i've only just downloaded the Bourden Test and i have an assesment in about 10 days, here is my 1st test result, i assume its pretty poor compairing on what i am seeing on here, am i doing it right? i have the time set at 2mins per sheet and 5 sheets. i use the arrow and the enter key. any tps would really help please guys. heres my 1st test stats:

Read all the advice in this thread, that many omissions is a 100% fail so that's what you need to work on!

Try and aim for zero... then after you've got that, work on building up speed...

and try and find out if your test will be on computer or paper. If it's paper I suggest you don't waste your time with the computer test and just print some sheets out.

I think they are looking for accuracy and consistency.
Try and work out a comfortable pace that means you can complete the same number of rows with no errors for each sheet.
I don't know what the pass mark is (don't think anyone does) but after practicing the paper test for a while I worked out I could do 10 rows on each of the 5 sheets with no omissions and no errors. I found I even had a few seconds after doing 10 rows to have a quick scan back over the sheet for any errors before the time was up.
I could push myself to do 11, 12 or even 13 rows per sheet but I found the odd error creeping in.

So when I did the test for real I made sure I did exactly 10 rows on each of the 5 sheets which meant I didn't rush, didn't get any errors (as far as I know) and was consistent on each sheet.

I can see you are averaging between 7 and 8 rows per sheet with a few errors. Not sure this will be good enough.

Just keep at it and you'll get there.

7 lines per sheet consistently with no errors is better than 10 per sheet with 1 error on each sheet. From what I remember as long as it is consistent and accurate and reasonably fast 7 lines plus it is a pass. When I did mine I did about 11 - 13 lines per sheet with no practice material except the stuff I was sent by the TOC, many folks went at this stage due to rushing and trying to fill the sheets, the problem was they didn't listen to the assessor because when he said they are looking for accuracy and consistency that is exactly what I did.

They use paper test, and if it helps you there are only two patterns to look for. The first is the square pattern of four, and the second is the 'y' shape. There are no other patterns.

When I had my assessment day with DBS in Doncaster, all tests were done on same day, and the MMI was carried out that very end of the day, it's a long day but they tell you in the day if you have been successful good luck, I start my new job as a trainee driver on Monday

Not bad at all for your third attempt.

Just work on getting the ones you omitted by slowing down slightly.
Aim for zero omitted and marked incorrectly, then build up your speed from there, working at a consistent rhythm.

For your information, I worked at a pace of about 1.5 cells per second in the actual test and passed.

I passed the assesment with them in February. At the end of the day those of us that passed were asked to commit to a day the following week for a Multi Modal Interview I believe.

When I arrived at Selhurst I was taken in to my Interview, which turned out to be my line manager interview!!! totally unprepared, I got myself through it and felt fairly confident, having had 10 years railway experience i knew a few buzz words, and through them at every opportunity.

I was told I'd be contacted by HR within a week, I was impatient and phoned 3 days later, to be told I was unsucessful - I questioned why I was slung in at the deep end for my interview, and was told it was possibly an admin error!! - I have since learned that everyone that got through, were existing staff - I assure you i'm not bitter as I am young enough to go for it again - but would like to see fair play with these vacancies or just advertise internally.

Thanks for your reply.

I know that sort of stuff goes on, luckily enough I have been with southern for the last 15 years so hoping that I get a better chance as I'm already in the company.
Unfortunatly I have also applied for a few jobs while being employed by then where people have got the job even before I have been for interview so I know it sucks.

I have already passed the assessment for a Shunters job but unfortunately have to do the whole shebang again.

I have bought a book from how2 become a train driver which gives most questions that I should be asked.

The only thing I am worried about is the interview as I have not really had a proper interview before so think this is where I might come unstuck.

Personal opinion of course but I found paper easier. It's easier to focus without it turning into a magic eye picture, if you know what I mean.

My advice is don't go too fast you will hear others marking their papers with a pencil at a rate you probably won't be able to keep up with don't worry they'll soon be on the train home. You will probably get about a third down each page, that's fine but be accurate.
