Just given this a go, got my assessment next week. Results below. If you could give me feedback I'd really appreciate it :). I was under the impression you had to complete as many rows as possible, but reading comments on here it would suggest that isn't the key. More so the accurary % as opposed to % complete...is that right?

Thanks.

This tool and this thread really are making this assessment test into something it isn't. It's a simple 10 minute part of the day. They do not build up to it nor make a fuss of it. I don't even know where to start.

After sitting the tests myself and speaking to the other trainees who will be on my course the impression I get from this test is if you cannot do it without stupid amounts of practice then you won't pass on the day. I don't mean that as insulting to anyone however.

It's a paper test and practicing on the program on a computer isn't the same as practicing on paper.

TBH if you practice it will help in passing the tests but will give a false result.

That was my first attempt. I've had a few more goes now, got 2 omissions and 1 incorrect from 3 sheets at 2 mins, 30 rows in total.

I plan to do two or 3 a night until the assessment day next Wednesday. By then I hope to be fairly decent at it!

In the pack I got sent (from DBS), it just gives you pages of various letters...do DBS use the computer version or paper version? No practicing one if they use the other...

I'm not sure about DBS but I did the paper version. I really wouldn't worry too much about it. It's a simple test designed to make sure you can focus and concentrate.... I just made sure I was accurate and worked at a steady pace. It's good to have a couple of practice goes so you know what to expect but it's a very small part of the day. My advice would be to prepare some good examples for the MMI. You need to demonstrate that you have the relevant competences/qualities for the role. Good luck with it

Thanks. I'm currently an Engineer on the infrastructure side of the industry, so I'm hoping my knowledge of the infrastructure and its systems will be a big plus-point.

Yeah I agree, definitely wrong.

I passed it today and probably managed a third of each sheet, maybe less. An element of speed is needed as someone on the assessment failed on it, but a steady pace is fine. Accuracy is key!

Well done - in this section of the forum the advice has always been accuracy and consistency over speed, paid off for you, good luck with the rest of the application

Fair enough. But I'm not convinced passing it through practice indicates good concentration ability.

It doesn't show much natural ability to be able to concentrate if you have practiced the tests or any tests for that matter. It shows forward thinking though for candidates to make an effort on acquiring the materials to practice but once again this will possibly put the candidates who do not practice but do have a natural ability to concentrate to be refused a position as their results may just be below the candidates who have practiced. As I have mentioned before I do worry that candidates who do not have the needed abilities to become a train driver are getting the roles due to gaining practice material on all the tests and also getting the answers to interview questions.

TDK, You make a good point...
However, the TOCS send out an information pack with practice material to help prepare you for the assessment. You even have to confirm that you've had it for at least seven days to make sure it's a level playing field. The paperwork Actually recommends you practice before attending.

Personally, I carefully read through the information pack and had a go at the practice material to familiarise myself. I also had a few goes using the GB download. It worked for me as I went feeling prepared and confident... I was the only person left by lunchtime.

It does seem that a lot of people spend far too much time practicing the GB test which essentially makes up a mere ten minutes of a six hour assessment day! All that practice is not very productive in my opinion.

My interview was based on my personal life experiences and they do dig deep to make sure you're not blagging it! Some of the other tests like the multi-tasking and reaction tests aren't easy to prepare for either. I think you'd be unlikely to pass unless you genuinely have the skills required (even if you ace the GB test).

My advice for anyone going for an assessment would be as follows: Read the information pack and have a go at the practice material so you know what to expect. Arrive on time, dress smart and listen to the instructor! Once those tests start you're on your own so make sure you understand what's expected.
Also, remember that being at that assessment centre is a big achievement. Most applicants don't even make the paper sift! Thinking about that gave me enough confidence to get over those initial exam nerves. If you have the skills required there's no reason why you won't pass.
If it's not for you you'll get feedback and you know what to work on for future opportunities!

Hi everyone, just a wee question - if I increase the density of the test does that just increase the number of times a 4-dot pattern comes up? Or does it have an effect on the size of the patterns or number of columns?

The only problem for me with the GBT was bad advice, first time I attempted it I had read on here people saying you have to go flat out as many lines as possible as accurate as possible. I read some people saying 13-14 lines was the way to go, I could do nowhere near that accurately, and I mean 100% accurately,so the upshot was I got a pass which was basically a nothing due to the practice material being in widespread use.
The next time I was advised that accuracy is more important than speed, but still go the best speed you can. This time I passed at the required standard. It is worth noting that even the OPC assessor before the test starts stresses what they are looking for and that accuracy is the priority.

Just given it my first ever attempt, not too shabby I think. I'm confident that if I get invited for assessment with DBS I can refine it down alot. I wasn't sure entirely what I was doing to begin with (8 omissions on the first sheet) but the later ones were better.

Seems like everyone is posting about GBT practice yet that time would be better spent on the Structured Interview which takes up 2 hours of the assessment day and 50% of the criteria.

GBT is just a little 10 minute test and is less than 10% of the criteria.

Unfortunately for people now trying to pass the tests there are no aids available for the new reactions test. I know an Internal who breezed though everything else but failed this.

Aim for 1,200, you'll probably do it with very little mistakes, then instead of wasting your time with the little 10 minute Group Boredom test, practice the Structured Interview instead as that takes up 90 minutes of the day.

I've been preparing my answers to the structured interview questions also, but it's good to cover all bases. I've practiced a little more with the GBT and i'm averaging around 1400-1500 with 0-2 omissions.

It'll all be a waste of time unless I get past the application stage anyway! :)

It's designed to be either something you can do or something you can't. They've designed constant practice out of the computer based test.

Just something I'd like to moot about the GBT, I lost one of my two chances on this in 2013, prior to the assessment day I practised assiduously on both the online version and the paper one, regularly getting 14 / 15 lines of dots on each page with none incorrect and less than 5 missed to give you an idea.

Yet how does the candidate know that they've failed on this or any other aspects of the tests, they merely tell you were too slow / not accurate enough and don't present you any empirical evidence of it.

Nothing to do with speed, the question is "fill in as many with 4 dots as you can accurately and consistently" if you miss 5 and do 15 lines on each this is probably why you failed if you had done 8 lines on each sheet and had 100% accuracy and consistency you would have passed. Unfortunately you will get duff advice on how to do the GB test and usually by other candidates.

Thanks for reply , but its 291 targets omitted not errors :(

As far as I know (and only as a hopeful applicant), errors and omissions are pretty much treated the same.

Error means you mistook the box for having 4 dots...
Omission means you didn't even see the 4 dots...

I'm sure someone will pick me up if I'm wrong, but you should be aiming for next to no errors OR omissions.

Totally unacceptable and a fail all the way, try reading the advice given about this subject on numerous occasions and then you may have a slim chance of passing

Guys I sincerely apologise for my last post in which I posted the results of my GBT on my computer. As I just downloaded and attempted the test with out knowing and understanding of the use of that software.
I apologise once again.

Actually I was clicking Space bar to select the asked set of dots. But I realised I should be pressing THE arrow button.
