this is a great program thanks :D

I know there are quite a few omissions,(what does omitted mean?) but for the first sheet at least i was working out what to actually do and how to control it. this was on the SCAAT mode but can anyone tell me if this is good for a first attempt

Perception & Attention:

Targets Omitted ------------ 67
Marked Incorrect ----------- 12

Speed:

Total Cells ---------------- 1427
Mean Cell Time ------------- 0.244
Median Cell Time ----------- 0.150

Completed Rows ------------- 53
Mean Row Time -------------- 6.079
Median Row Time ------------ 5.850

Vigilance:

Row Fluctuation ------------ 4.97

thanks

mrredrunner100

That is probably the worst score I have seen. If that is all you can do I would forget it.

Looking at your previous posts mrredrunner100 you're still at school (is that correct?).
If so then ignore the comment above and just keep trying. You have plenty of time to perfect this test before you're old enough to apply so don't worry.
If your dream is to be a driver then that is what you should aim for.
You've already taken the first step by researching the application process.
I hope you get to do it one day.

By continuously practicing this test does give a false impression of a candidates abilities, if you cannot concentrate you cannot concentrate. Possible using other tools to hone your concentration is far better than practicing a gbt. I do worry as if a driver loses concentration at a critical time they may kill people!

Yeah, but this kid is 16/17 so doesn't need knocking back at this stage.
I just thought your comment to 'forget it' was a bit harsh.

Yes, the ramfications are quite serious but I believe that the new vigilance test, the WAFV from Schuhfried, should highlight any possible lapses of concentration.

Furthermore, there is no practice tool available publicly and even if there was, there still is not any available performance data from members of this forum so there would be no means of comparison for being able to make an educated guess as to what constitutes a good performance on the WAFV. Suffice to say, consistency would probably be the key.

I have no idea as I have never met the member in question but I see some people on my travels, encased in headphones, tapping away on mobiles for the entire journey complete oblivious to the outside, and you think, never in a thousand years.

I have never met him/her either but suspected it was a young person by the tone of the post and simply looked through some old posts to confirm.
Please don't tar everyone with the same brush.
I see adults happily texting away, drinking, fixing makeup etc. on the M62 every day. That doesn't mean everyone does the same.

I think it's great that someone of that age is already planning their career and chasing their goal.
A little encouragement goes a long way in my opinion. And it will be a very sad day when youngsters are discouraged from pursuing a career in the Rail Industry (or any industry come to that) simply because they are young and have yet to acquire the necessary skills.

To be fair, it is an aptitude test which should be done cold and tests for the natural abilities which somebody has decided are required to make a competent train driver and keep people safe. We all know it is practiced, you'd be daft not to as everybody else is and you are given materials to familiarise yourself with the type of testing you'll encounter, but you should have the ability to be close enough straight away. Unless you have completely misunderstood the test, that amount of omissions would suggest as the required competencies stand it may not be the role for you, you probably could practice your way to a decent score, but is that safe and does it defeat the purpose of the testing? The skills tested are not supposed to be acquired but should be natural.

Saying all of that, of course best of luck to everyone trying and that is just my interpretation of the tests.

Sorry but the age is irrelevant if the said candidate cannot concentrate or doesn't have a natural ability to concentrate they may hone their career on being a train driver and waste a lot of time that can be used on other careers.

I think age does come into it. If the person is 16/17 years of age then at that age they have other things on their mind rather than concentrating something they know they wont be actually able to do for a few years. They have time, time to mature and get into that work ethic that you need to be a driver, or whatever they want to be.

I personally wouldn't take someone until they were mid 20's to be honest..... A lot of people of 21 are still very immature, and having said that there are some that are mature beyond theirs years.......... obviously, this would show in interview

There is a major difference in wanting to be a train driver and needing to be a train driver, the want to be candidates will be a lot better than the need to be.

yes i do really want to be a train driver, i have been in to trains since a young age and it is my dream to drive trains :D

That is probably the worst score I have seen. If that is all you can do I would forget it.

this is a bit harsh to be honest. and you have overlooked some stuff on my original post in this thread like this;

i was working out what to actually do and how to control it.

and there is a help page but it wouldnt work on my pc and that is my first ever attempt and i had no idea what i was meant to be doing and i was working out what to do with a bit of trial and error, and because it was my first ever time i posted it on here to find out weather i was doing the right thing. now after a few days of trial and error i have found out what to do and i am taking it slow to start with and i have had tests that come out with 0/1 ommisions and a low amount of errors. you probably didnt read my first post in this thread fully hence i pointed it out in the quote above. also i noticed this that someone had posted

but I see some people on my travels, encased in headphones, tapping away on mobiles for the entire journey complete oblivious to the outside, and you think, never in a thousand years.

im guessing your stereotyping here because there are young people that aren't like that, just because people have seen programmes like the only way is essex (which i have never watched by the way but i know what the programmes like) and other things like that they immediatly get the image of what young people are like and yes i agree there are some people that are oblivious to the outside world but there are younger people and people in general like me that aren't like that, that go out and do something different, achieve stuff, voluenteer, explore the world and stuff so your sterotype is a bit unfair, yes i see people on my travels on the train that are on their phones a lot on the train but then there are also young people which i see that arent on thier phones all the time and look out the window, talk to fellow passengers and other stuff so it is not completly as you see it, its only when you get to know the person that then you know what they are like and if they are likley to be "encased in headphones, tapping away on mobiles for the entire journey" or not.

back to what others were saying, at the moment age does come in to it because like red18 said it is awesome that younger people are taking an interest in this industry. and from what i have gathered from other posts it is a long proccess and it is best to research now. and i guess its a bit like GCSE's with the practicing side of things because they dont say "you can't revise for this exam" do they? and some people do have the natural ability to concentrate but it needs practicing and once it actually comes out then they are good at it. its like with a sport such as swimming you can become really quick but it will require training like i have been training for about 5/6 years and i an now really quick and i can do a lot more distance in competitions and training sessions when when i first started i couldnt do 10 lengths of butterfly and a fast pace and now i can (and more), so its the same with concentration.

i believe that if you believe that you can do it then you can and keep trying and you will get there, no matter what people on forums say. just look at the paralympic and olympic games you will see the exact same example there too, but in this context it is with trains

anyway as i said at the start you have overlooked an important part in the first post by me in this thread, it was my first time and i had no idea what the controls were and no idea what the things like omitted mean and stuff like that and also what was good and what isnt, and now i have found that out i am a lot better than the original result in this thread. and your comment about forgetting it i am ignoring it like red18 says because it is very harsh (the way i see it)

one last thing i noticed the post before mine i want to be a train driver, i have wanted to be from a very young age

It may be your dream to drive trains but is it your dream to be a train driver? There is a huge difference! As for the rest of your post I did no stereotyping I looked at the result and commented on the evidence, provide some more evidence of no omissions and no errors with 8 lines per page consistently on your 3rd or 4 attempt and then I will take back my original comment. Practicing this part of the test does not prove your ability to naturally be able to concentrate consistently and will give a false result.

As for younger people taking an interest in trains this has been about long before you and I were born and it was hell of lot more popular years ago than it is now.

Really odd question, and for this I will assume that the SCAAT program here is like the one when getting tested by a TOC. but if that is the case at the end of the 1 min for each sheet, say you was to move onto the next symbol and as soon as you did the time ran out before you could mark it, that's still an omission i guess? as unfair as that would be.

The omissions counted are the ones missed withing the range that you managed to get through i.e from the first symbol (or dots as it will be) and the last symbol (dots) that you marked.

No intention of using any brushes on anyone. From your description of the M62, it makes me glad that I catch the train mainly.

Your latter comment has given me inspiration for a new thread. It is my impression that many people tend to come into the railways from certain career paths where the experience is conducive towards working on the railways. Mr RedRunner would do well to use the five years to his advantage.

Yes, Mr RedRunner100, you are 'guessing' that I am stereotyping. I never explicitly stated that I thought that most or all young people engage in the afore-mentioned practice of listening to headphone music and playing with mobiles. I would not even want to comment on the demographics of age relating to such activities although I recognise that I had a more avid interest in music as a teenager and beyond. You may or may not think that my opinions on the subject are tantamount to the production of fertiliser using bovine means.

Not actually a qualified train as such, I have only ever driven a train once, but there is more to being a train driver than simply driving a train. You have to know the rules, traction and routes to a fine level of detail and you have to know what to do when things go wrong and act decisively. I think the excellent post from TDK should cover some of the more notable qualities that individuals need to bring to the role of train driving. Additionally, I would add that experience of working shifts would be a distinct advantage. There is also the constant threat of those people who wish to terminate their lives by jumping in the path of a train.

Be also good to have a plan B as the competition for train driving jobs is very intense so you have to be prepared for disappointment.

Haven't got time to read through the whole thread but is there a free download available for Mac? I've searched online to no avail. Any help would be appreciated

Well I've had a little practice with the download and on paper and I'm getting there slowly.. I've got an assessment in a little over a week and my information pack suggests they don't do the Scaat test? I've had a couple of goes though as it must be good for reaction and memory which will help.. Below are my results so far... I know I need to reduce the omissions but can I get to the required standard within a week?? We shall see...

GB TEST:
Overall Statistics:
-------------------
Perception & Attention:
Targets Omitted ------------ 4
Marked Incorrect ----------- None
Speed:
Total Cells ---------------- 1178
Mean Cell Time ------------- 0.325
Median Cell Time ----------- 0.260
Completed Rows ------------- 45
Mean Row Time -------------- 8.125
Median Row Time ------------ 7.960
Vigilance:
Row Fluctuation ------------ 4.99

SCAAT:
Targets Omitted ------------ 5
Marked Incorrect ----------- None
Speed:
Total Cells ---------------- 1432
Mean Cell Time ------------- 0.239
Median Cell Time ----------- 0.170
Completed Rows ------------- 54
Mean Row Time -------------- 5.959
Median Row Time ------------ 5.525
Vigilance:
Row Fluctuation ------------ 10.16

I think I've got some work to do....

Slow down to achieve 100% without any errors or emissions and then try to speed it up. You are going too fast by looks of it at the moment.

Cheers, l keep working on it... I managed zero omissions but only averaged 6 or 7 lines per sheet. Slower seems to work but that might be a little too slow?

7 lines with no errors or omissions is better than 10 lines with. Consistency and accuracy is the key

Sounds good! Thanks for the heads up... I can achieve that already so I just need to keep practicing. I won't get stressed about it but it's good to be prepared ??????
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I just had another couple of goes.. I dropped the speed right down and got zero omissions and now I'm trying to pick the pace up and keep the accuracy. Not a perfect score but not bad:

Attempt 1:

Overall Statistics:
-------------------
Perception & Attention:
Targets Omitted ------------ 2
Marked Incorrect ----------- None
Speed:
Total Cells ---------------- 1236
Mean Cell Time ------------- 0.309
Median Cell Time ----------- 0.250
Completed Rows ------------- 48
Mean Row Time -------------- 7.709
Median Row Time ------------ 7.535
Vigilance:
Row Fluctuation ------------ 4.44

Attempt 2:

Overall Statistics:
-------------------
Perception & Attention:
Targets Omitted ------------ 1
Marked Incorrect ----------- None
Speed:
Total Cells ---------------- 1269
Mean Cell Time ------------- 0.301
Median Cell Time ----------- 0.240
Completed Rows ------------- 49
Mean Row Time -------------- 7.516
Median Row Time ------------ 7.340
Vigilance:
Row Fluctuation ------------ 3.94

Getting there...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Right.. I had another go this evening and got good accuracy and fairly speedy. I've only had 7 goes at the DB in total and will probably give it one more go before my assessment centre day. Here's my results from today (I'll stop posting my results up now...)

Perception & Attention:

Targets Omitted ------------ None
Marked Incorrect ----------- None
Speed:
Total Cells ---------------- 1148
Mean Cell Time ------------- 0.333
Median Cell Time ----------- 0.290
Completed Rows ------------- 44
Mean Row Time -------------- 8.314
Median Row Time ------------ 8.275
Vigilance:
Row Fluctuation ------------ 2.65

Although there is no clear pass mark on this I heard that you must score at least 96% accuracy with at least 51% of the paper complete....

You heard wrong

Yeah I agree, definitely wrong.

I passed it today and probably managed a third of each sheet, maybe less. An element of speed is needed as someone on the assessment failed on it, but a steady pace is fine. Accuracy is key!

Just given this a go, got my assessment next week. Results below. If you could give me feedback I'd really appreciate it :). I was under the impression you had to complete as many rows as possible, but reading comments on here it would suggest that isn't the key. More so the accurary % as opposed to % complete...is that right?

Thanks.

Just given this a go, got my assessment next week. Results below. If you could give me feedback I'd really appreciate it :). I was under the impression you had to complete as many rows as possible, but reading comments on here it would suggest that isn't the key. More so the accurary % as opposed to % complete...is that right?

Thanks.

This tool and this thread really are making this assessment test into something it isn't. It's a simple 10 minute part of the day. They do not build up to it nor make a fuss of it. I don't even know where to start.

After sitting the tests myself and speaking to the other trainees who will be on my course the impression I get from this test is if you cannot do it without stupid amounts of practice then you won't pass on the day. I don't mean that as insulting to anyone however.

It's a paper test and practicing on the program on a computer isn't the same as practicing on paper.
