Greggs at stations

I'm quite fond of the sausage cheese and bean melt.

Right at the foot of the footbridge on the concourse adjacent to plat 9 and 10...

Note the Neville Street Greggs is still there. I think it's something small like 5-10-15p more in the station itself than across the road.

I know that it had been removed for a period of time as it hasn't been there recently.

The Greggs down south (well Brighton) dont sell the corned beef pastie. Have to get them when i head back ooop north.

Small history:
Greggs, based in Newcastle. Started to expand in the early 80's when they took over Carricks. Then took over bakers oven. Some bakers oven used to have a cafe/ restaurant in the back, and were good for cheap filling meals when I was at uni back in the day (late 90's). They then started to expand, and finally made it down to Brighton around 2007. They have since expanded to Airports, Stations and recently, Motorways. Still based in Gosforth, Newcastle.

Down here in Sussex I also like the Forfars bakery. Since Greggs came to town they have had to up their game.
Meanwhile, at Brighton station, if you want a sausage roll, you pay £2.80 at the Pasty Shop. (ex Cornwall pasty shop). If your lucky, you get a 10% bite discount.
If your feeling adventurous, you go to the Sing Lee Chippy just across the road. Cheap, but either great, or whoaaaa, and perhaps the first chippy that seems to be in their front room. Jumbo Battered Sausage and Chips, £2.60

Don't think so. There's one opposite the station immediatley across the road upon exiting.

I don't think Greggs is much cop. I prefer Pound Bakery for hot food - still warm, much greasier (therefore tastier..) and it has a much better range of products.

That said, I'm not sure whether I should be concerned that the filling of my sausage roll is grey or bright pink

Just out of interest, would it be permitted, with an Advance ticket, to leave a station (e.g. Newcastle) between train connections, to pop across the road for a pie, or would the fact that there is a shop on the concourse (albeit at three times the price) mean this reason for a 'BoJ' is not allowed?

I know the old chestnut about "popping outside for a smoke", but wondered what the official ruling on "popping outside for a snack" would be.

Possibly slightly more but certainly not a great deal.

Greggs are represented in, as far as I'm aware, four of West Yorkshire's bus stations (Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Wakefield) and I think they're slightly more expensive.

The ones in a West Yorkshire bus stations charge the same price, no reason why not, I doubt Metro would charge extreme rents. Besides the one in Huddersfield which is new, they've all been there donkeys years, since Leeds and Wakefield were built, and the one in the Interchange in Bradford used to be a Bakers Oven and has been there since the 80s at least

Greggs insist relatively normal prices are maintained- otherwise Greggs' on motorway service stations would be as expensive as everything else (excluding M&S who have a similar policy in place).

Greggs at motorway services do charge more, and exclude themselves from offers/loyalty schemes etc. I think the Breakfast Roll and Drink offer is £3, at least at Birch on the M62

They are more prevalent up north, walking round Central London you rarely see one, it's all Pret a Manger down there, whereas in Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle they are on every other street.

Greggs are Awful, Greenhalghs or Pound Bakery for me.. although i used to love the bakehouse the one at Orrell Post it was near the silly college and they had amazing Butter Pies Place is now an Italian Takeaway

I think it counts as BOJ, but I believe getting Dominoes to deliver pizza to the ticket barrier is permitted

They are more prevalent up north, walking round Central London you rarely see one, it's all Pret a Manger down there, whereas in Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle they are on every other street.

Let's just balance this out slightly. Yes we do have plenty of Greggs, but we do also host Pret a Manger up here too.

The only one we don't have for some reason is "EAT", which I have no doubt we'll get in the near future.

Not all Northerners munch away on cheap, crappy pasties.

Greggs did have plans to open up a South-West bakery in Amesbury, although I think that's been on the back burner (and Amesbury got a massive Home Bargains depot instead)

The real question is of course why we have allowed these chains to take over and virtually evict the good old greasy spoon from our High Streets. There are still a few around where you can get a well cooked traditional english breakfast, or a bacon or sausage sandwich made with fresh bread, a choice of sandwich made to your specification in front of your eyes. However not enough.

Incidentally has Greggs always just sold sandwiches, pasties, melts, sausage rolls etc or did it used to sell loaves of bread and other bakery items? Or is it just down soth where it doesnt sell bread?

The one opposite the station in Raynes Park sells bread n stuff - it took over an existing bakery so maybe that has something to do with it.

For the same reason other fast food places have done the same - we are increasingly in a rush and don't want to sit down for a fry-up, we'd rather take it away in a sandwich to scoff on the go. Particularly in the City.

You are zoomed out quite far on that map. I don't see many in what I would class as Central London i.e the West End. Looking on their website there are about 7 or 8, with a few more in the City.

I wouldn't have thought so - I could think of quite a few stations with a Starbucks, and endless ones with a Costa. At least up north, all three are equally common.

(an aside: the Greggs in Wolverhampton has eat in prices. There are something like three tables and two of them are outside. Also, 90p? Aren't sausage rolls 80p, or has there been a New Year price hike?)

Greggs should be at all main stations now as the french pasty places and upper crust are no longer decent or worth the money.

Remember "A Piece of Cake"? Another BR brand I believe? Their sausage rolls were lovely.

Subway, which provides fresh sandwiches, seems to be going from strength to strength, does it not? (The one that used to be at Euston is missed...)

I don't think having a large number of Greggs bakeries in a town/city is necessarily a good thing. If there are too many then the food is more likely to cool down before you buy it.

In Bradford I actually prefer the interchange outlet to the others because it has a lot more customers.

And in Guildford I can't say I miss the one at the top of the high street (nobody goes up there anyway).

Until such a day when Greggs realise the potential of the South West market and make an irresistible offer for one of the aforementioned companies.

Greggs lack of presence in your region will be short lived. They've taken over most places!

I must be one of the few that don't like Greggs. Always find their stuff a bit of a disappointment. Probably why they say "you only get what you pay for".
