What the original poster should have done was to pay for the fare at Stratford; however it does seem harsh to go for prosecution, or something similar, when it seems that it was a case of "I am in a rush, I need to get to work" and he was almost certainly intending to pay the fare later in the day.

A penalty fare would seem to me to be a fair compromise between nothing happening at all and the OTT response of prosecution. One has to remember here that the train company was at fault for cancelling the train.

The passenger's behaviour and actions immediately before and during the encounter with e revenue protection staff member will guide the decision between options such as taking no further action, selling a ticket, issuing a Penalty Fare, or reporting for prosecution. A passenger who appears to be taking an action that is associated with paying a short fare rather than speaking to a staff member to regularise his situation will tend to see consequences later in that list.

I'm afraid I don't really see the relevance - Compulsory ticket areas are only really relevant for Penalty fares; North Fambridge is not a Penalty fares station and as there are no ticket issuing facilities there a customer cannot be charged a Penalty fare for being present within any Compulsory ticket area.

For what it's worth however, Stratford station is not a Compulsory ticket area under the Greater Anglia Penalty fares scheme. The Overground and DLR platforms are Compulsory ticket areas however.

This the gateway into London if anyone wanted to jump the fare this is the route they take not saying this is the case here but if I was the RPI I be looking into the statement given and checking if bought the correct tickets in the past, as you dont always get a ticket inspector on the southminster line trains either ..lol
