What the original poster should have done was to pay for the fare at Stratford; however it does seem harsh to go for prosecution, or something similar, when it seems that it was a case of "I am in a rush, I need to get to work" and he was almost certainly intending to pay the fare later in the day.
A penalty fare would seem to me to be a fair compromise between nothing happening at all and the OTT response of prosecution. One has to remember here that the train company was at fault for cancelling the train.
