I'm hoping to travel from Paddington to Hereford tomorrow. If there are still problems does anyone know if Euston-New Street-Hereford (VT and LM) would count as a "reasonable route?"

There are LM Only fares to Hereford via New Street.
In the "good old days" (BR) it was certainly a valid route (at higher fare).
I don't see why it would not be accepted in the current disruption.

It is valid, ticket acceptance is in force.

Customers are advised to expect significantly increased journey times and our services both to and from London Paddington to be particularly busy. We have lifted ticket restrictions for all journeys affected. Customers may wish to avoid travelling at peak times, or use one of the alternative transport providers below, where First Great Western tickets will be valid.

- South West Trains Services between Reading and London Waterloo
- Transport For London Buses in the Outer London Area
- London Underground Services from Ealing Broadway
- Virgin Trains/Cross Country Services to London Euston
- Chiltern Services via Banbury to Marylebone

Network Rail expects disruption to continue for the remainder of Friday 21st December.

Further updates will be provided on this website when they are known.

Lets just hope it works on Sunday. I've gotta get back from Kent to Worcester as I have work Christmas Eve!

Any word about Paddington to Swansea services?

I'm travelling to Swansea tomorrow and returning on Sunday about midday.

Padd to Swansea servies are the only south wales services running, so you are in luck, but expect delays

As far as I could see looking online, then actually doing my journey home from Oxford, Cotswold Line trains were all running from Paddington this evening, typically departing about 20-30 minutes late from Oxford.

FGW's JourneyCheck page has been doing a decent job of listing which trains are cancelled and which will run, so probably best to look there before you set off to a station, whether that's Paddington, Marylebone or Euston.

Yea, I've seen the Cotswold trains are running, its just if the disruption will be bad enough for it to be worth my while to go another way.

Rather academic, though, given that the problem was actually fixed this morning before you posted, so ticket easements on other routes no longer apply. And if the direct trains are running, albeit with a bit of a delay, what is the point of going all the way round via Birmingham?

Especially when you would be relying on LM to complete your journey and they once again don't have enough staff on duty to run a full timetable, plus the signals in the west of Birmingham are playing up this morning...

NRE has tweeted that all trains in the Cardiff area are at a stand due to a major signalling problem, would be the 3rd day in a row we have had one of them !!!

Lines between Bristol Parkway and Swindon now blocked as well.....as is usual in bad weather.

Good job they have sorted it out. No second chances/ back up plan as the relief lines are shut at the London end next week.

The delays in the Paddington area are cleared but there are still delays in the Cardiff area and in south west England (see map), details on NRE:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/today.html

The parts that affect the main line services to/from Paddington are:

National Rail Enquiries said:
Plymouth - Exeter - Taunton

  • No trains will run between Plymouth and Tiverton Parkway / Taunton
  • A limited bus service will run between Plymouth and Tiverton Parkway / Taunton but this is expected to be very busy
  • A limited CrossCountry service is also running between Penzance and Plymouth. Passengers are advised to use First Great Western trains
  • Journey times may be extended by up to 3 hours
  • First Great Western and CrossCountry are accepting each others passengers
  • First Great Western passengers may use South West Trains services between Exeter and London Waterloo
National Rail Enquiries said:
Newport - Cardiff Central - Swansea
No trains are running between Newport, Cardiff Central and Swansea due to flooding at Pencoed and Neath. No replacement road transport is available because of poor road conditions

Bristol - Cardiff Central
Trains between Bristol and Cardiff Central are being delayed by up to 60 minutes.

Even if your journey is just Reading - Paddington it may be affected as some trains are cancelled and some are delayed. Those that are running may be busier than normal due to displacement of passengers from other services.

Well the original post about going that way was made last night when NRE and FGW were both expecting it to carry on for all of today. Now its solved (apparently) its via the Cotswolds for me.

The line between Swindon and Bristol Parkway is still open, the 0845 and 0945 ex Paddington have terminated at
Bristol Parkway, and the 1045 has just arrived there.
