Proving it is needed after all - and didn't end up in the bin as some may have predicted, 43160 has made a comeback - The PC involved in the Plymouth Station shunt has been out on test in the South West this week, sporting both a new cab and FGW Blue with First Great Western.

Technically the cab is not "new".

Was around London today, the following were observed:
130 & 131 at Reading TCD
132 & 133 H&H shuttles
135 & 137 H&H shuttles
134 & 136 stabled outside shed at North Pole

Doors were open to the shed, as well as 800004 visible there were also two shiny 387s so presume 138 & 139.

Rode on 137 last week, soon as I stepped into it there was that nice distinct "new" smell. ;)

Any idea when 387130 and 131 will return to North Pole? Or will they need to return, given that 387138 and 387139 have both now been delivered, with 387140 and 387141 both running up to Crewe on test so not far off themselves?

Took a 165 front Worcester to Paddington a few days ago which stood in for a failed 180 earlier in the day. That was fun!

To be honest I was just happy any train turned up as I was meant to board the 17.02 Foregate Street to Westbury service that was cancelled (due to it breaking down on the inward journey apparently) so got the Paddington one instead. Though I'd prefer to be on a 180 than a 165, I'd rather a 165 than to be stranded there for an hour or two!

Interesting fact - a 5-car Cl.180 has almost exactly the same number of Standard Class seats as a 3-car Cl.166 set.

Yeah we tend to get a few 165's and 166's that work on the Great Malvern/Worcester FS or SH and Hereford route, unfortunately the 180's seem to not be as reliable as we want. Nevertheless, I wouldn't be surprised if GWR put the IEP's on the Hereford and Worcester routes from Autumn 2017.

And for you complainers (Deepgreen in particular) ... A train is better than no train.

Yes - blindingly obviously! My point was a mild expression of preference for 166s over 165s on the NDL, not an insistence that nothing else can be tolerated!

Interesting question; what is the intended roll-out plan for the class 800s? Are they going to appear one-by-one vice other stock, or are GWR going to wait until 7 or 8 have been delivered and introduce them all at once at a timetable change? How quickly will the roll-out of the 800s happen once the first is ready for public use?

Plans have yet to be finalised. GWR don't get their hands on their first set for driver training until late Spring. The good money would be on a deployment on N Cotswold duties in place of 180s, but there are a lot of compatibility works to be done on that route in the interim.

We do know that the at300s are replacing the west HSTs on a one for one once testing and training are done. As are the short sets replacing 150 diagrams one for one.

Yeah that does sound about right, the 180's do need to go, especially with Old Oak Common closing soon. Funny thing is, though that seems like a bright idea, not a single IEP has even touched North of Didcot yet, let alone the Cotswold line, with more of the testing being focused around London to Bristol Temple Meads and Parkway, as well as down the South Coast and the Riviera Line, so maybe they would be replacing the Bristol HST's first? Who knows, a lot of time yet for Hitachi to send the IEP's up to Oxford and maybe even beyond!

Arguably the first sets to go ought to be the ScotRail HSTs. I know the 180s are promised to Grand Central, but they already have a contingency in their fleet. ScotRail don't.
