It would indeed, 165103 was stopped over the weekend for decal fitment. It will be out & about tomorrow. It's pencilled in for 5P00 ECS Paddington.

Yup, it went to Padddington, then did a Reading stopper to Reading and has now operated ECS to Maidenhead to go on the Marlow line. Whether it will stay on the Marlow Donkey all day or operated 1P97 to Paddington is yet to be seen.

166220 was on the North Downs line (0702 from Reading) this morning, accruing more and more lost time with all the doors on one car out of order. Chaos at a packed Redhill where everyone had to leave by the remaining four sets of doors before allowing the crowds on. The train was 35 late by the time it got back to Reading.

I noticed that too, I was on a green turbo last night. What I also don't understand is why as part of the declassification they thought it'd be alright to rip the drinks trays off the walls, leaving an unsightly mess!

Exactly - the whole programme has been messy, and just seems to reflect the lack of attention to detail that plagues the railway today. The '1' on the door for first class is pretty poor, and there could easily have been both a large '1' on the body side and the legend 'First class' without any detriment to the quality of the livery, plus, of course, a proper yellow stripe over the windows.

Had a a ride on 166205 (the one with the green interior) on Saturday - the 21:50 Paddington to Worcester.

The interior was in a mess and it's very understandable why GWR have stopped for a rethink. The grey seat fabric is showing every stain in crystal clarity (eugh) and the green headrests have started to develop a slightly brown hue (eugh again).

Is there any news of when a more robust design is going to be introduced?

Not surprised it's looking pretty poor now, it looked like a bad design from the start. At least the dark Blue moquette and carpet of the Dynamic Lines livery hid it rather well.

Still not a fan of the HST - How is that looking these days? If there's one thing I dislike about it the most, it's the leather head rests. Why do I want to put my head against something that's probably oily and uncleaned? (ScotRail had them on the 170s, they looked awful and became fairly dirty pretty quickly on those!). It's a premium look that's been done on the cheap.

I spotted that a few weeks back and nobody agreed with me!

It's hard for people to agree or disagree on how that interior is wearing if they haven't actually ridden on the set in question and seen it for themselves.

166220 and 150001 on the branch today. 220 may be green but its interior was blue - almost spotless and looking quite new. 001 has the modified GWR interior which includes moqutte on the seats instead of the flack material used on the 166. Seats looking ok, but interior panels looking scratched around the vestibules and the grey Lino flooring looking dirty and tired. Probably needs a good clean but overall it's not giving a good impression. New lav had an argumentative door though, first it wouldn't close then wouldn't stop reminding you "Toilet Door is Locked""Toilet Door is Locked""Toilet Door is Locked".

And I still wish they'd find the punctuation for those announcements!

I looks like they have spray painted the back of the 150/2s seats during the refurbs. I was on 150233 earlier and already a few of the seat backs are starting to look ropey.

Certainly 001 & 002 have had the black plastic seat backs sprayed. In light grey. Oh dear. I do wonder what the life expectancy of that is expected to be!

Most are holding up so far. Although clearly little attention has been made to fill out 25 years of knocks and vandalism as the light grey shows up the etchings more.

Any of the light grey coming off seems to be around the back of the nibs on the Ashbournes - probably where people are trying to pull them out again.

Still find the recent refurbishment to 001 a little odd - DMS 55300 is freezing, 55400 seems to put out a little heat but DMSL 55200 is absolutely roasting - In the fitment of the new loo, have the moves the heaters?

If it's the same cloth in 150001 that has been used in the 150/2s it certainly isn't moquette, but flat cloth. Yet another train operator cutting corners and seemingly determined to not learn lessons over and over again. Idiots.

Ooh, any further info on the green power car with dragon?

Well apparently it's on both power cars, 43187 and 43188 to go with the coaching stock. It's already heading down to Plymouth tonight on 1C95 1903 Paddington to Plymouth, was never going to be long before the 'Welsh' power cars headed South.

It's a new service GWR launched today called 'The Welshman' to mark the opening of the Severn Tunnel.

Was introduced into service today on 1L34 0728 Swansea to Paddington, where upon arrival, the photo was taken above.

It is to celebrate the re-opening of the Severn Tunnel following re-wiring and we have another named train, Y Cymro (The Welshman). 1L34 0728 Swansea to Paddington has now become a named train..

Another 166 livery error today - I boarded 166216 at Betchworth and saw the silver first class band at the front, along with the '1' on the door, and assumed it denoted first class inside - wrong! There was no internal indication of first class or any antimacassars. However, on alighting at Redhill, I noticed that the other end of the unit had no external first class markings, but the interior was fully-fitted with stickers and anti-macassars!

How hard can it be to get something this basic right?

Whichever HST set was working the 18:50 to Oxford last night has a TF in place of Coach B. Not sure if it's out today but it made a nice change last night!

I saw the same set at Swindon yesterday, it occasionally happens. You end up sitting in 1st Class whilst it's empty, because nobody knows its declassified! All you have to do is ask the TM...

I was on 166205 again this morning. It still carries its (admittedly almost useless) silver first class stripe at both ends of the unit in error - I assume we can expect this simple task to remain uncorrected for years to come? The same goes for the units which are carrying green livery, but with no decals, etc? No doubt all will be overlooked because no-one is supposed to review each unit's livery once it has been at least partly applied.

Details, I know, but it shouldn't be so hard to get a new livery right, given the huge publicity arranged for the re-branding.

What annoys me more than anything is the fact First group want to go for a British Airways, John Lewis, Waitrose sort of high class brand recognition, which means attention to detail and actually planning things out, and all we've had is a load of posters and videos(some of them are appalling e.g. staff recruitment video) and liveries which don't even have consistency, for example LA16 set doesn't have a first class band on the buffet coach, in comparison with LA15(original set), all the 165s have a light green band on the drivers door where as most of the 166's have nothing on the drivers door, and 150238 has a different disabled logo compared to all the other 150's. It just goes to show what a cheap rebrand this is, its a shame is dragging the GWR name into the mud as well!

Will they repaint the 8 blue 166s in green?

Don't believe there are any plans to, I was surprised myself to see the first 166 come back from it's repaint into GWR branding with FGW stickers and in plain blue. Those units will be transferred west, regardless of whether they are green or blue.

Does anyone know why they are in FGW blue, not in GWR green?

Because they were due a repaint, but the rebrand was dependent on FGW being awarded the direct award through to 2019.

166221 was repainted and fitted with a disabled toilet etc in Summer 2014, franchise extension was Spring 2015 with Rebrand launching September 2015.

Do you actually think most passengers give a monkey's about what strip of vinyl is stuck where? They see a dark green train instead of a dark blue train.

Will they repaint the 8 blue 166s in green?

Eventually, yes. But won't be happening any time soon.

Perhaps when the 166 fleet is fitted with 2+2 seats but when that will be is anyone's guess, since the GWR rolling stock situation for the next few years still isn't nailed down due to electrification delays.

Your clearly not the sort of person that uses high class retailers and travel then. Most people might not give a monkey's but its about presenting an image, i.e attention to detail, giving a personal service etc. Something First Group don't seem to get the hang of.

Some people might see it as being petty or silly, but British Airways actually spent a week checking every inch of the First Class cabin on a A380 when delivered for scratches etc, if GWR actually paid attention to its trains in the same way, then people might actually believe half the garble the pretend to care about in "The Renaissance of Rail"

Perhaps if you expect BA A380 first class levels of service, you'd be willing to pay similar fares, about an order of magnitude higher or so

Certainly within the sleeper repaints, the contractors are not giving us what we requested. Not just vinals but quality and even different shades..... These will take time to rectify.
