Empty stock 5Z40 to run Saturday morning , 09.20 off Penzance Long Rock depot, apparently consisting of a green 57 loco plus all green GWR sleeper set. Running empty to Paddington for a photo shoot......
Interestingly times for 75mph despite FGW allowing their 57s to run at 95mph again now the bogies have all been overhauled.

I wonder how close the plain blue matches that of the Scotrail "Saltire" livery and suspect it's all vinyl for the rest of the fleet.

It's bog standard FGW blue; just the usual paintjob but without the Dynamic Lines stickers over the top. My suspicion is they'll receive plain FGW fleename vinyls as per the recent Sprinter & Turbo outshoppings.

First dark blue is definitely not the same as ScotRail Saltaire blue.

That was 57303 and entirely FGW carriages.

Is anyone able to reveal what is going on for the FGW / GWR "new livery" launch on 20th September? Or is it a closely guarded secret!

I am not even sure if there is anything taking place or if the day quoted is correct.

There is a picture showing the side of the GWR-marked sleeper at Plymouth with Night Riviera branding in English and Cornish here

Nope. I still can't say I'm impressed. The gWr sticker in the matt band just exaggerates how bland the matt band is and still doesn't give it a purpose. The next thing I find bizarre is the deliberate disconnection from First & the soon to be former First Great Western - but then receives a slightly excessive 'A First Group Company' on the silver band and 'Operated by First Group' by the sole bar. Then the Cornish translation, don't get me wrong I love the county, it's landscapes and it's history but I have to ask Why? Adding Bi Lingual notices to rolling stock operated by Arriva Trains Wales and ScotRail I can understand because there are areas of each country which still either speak Welsh or Scottish Gaelic. But Cornish? A language where 4 years ago a survey revealed that only 557 people spoke the language, with only 467 of them living in Cornwall. It just seems like they are trying to overcomplicate their already simple livery.

Note that the new Caledonian Sleeper isn't Bi Lingual despite serving a much larger Gaelic speaking areas - although it does offer information in several different languages including Gaelic.

I will say one thing for it though - It's showing up the scratches and dirt very well already. And who, thought it was a good idea to paint the 166s roof with Matt Black? Because a black roof will work wonders for a train renown for having poor air conditioning...

I like it a lot so far, but will hold judgement until I see one in the flesh. To me although the basic FGW is fine, I can't stand the gastly pink everywhere so each to their own.

If they're going to put stickers on the Caledonian Sleeper they should really be tri lingual ones. More people will speak Scots in the Glasgow/Edinburgh/Aberdeen corridor, than speak Gaelic in the Glasgow/Fort William/Inverness corridor.

Where are all the scratches and dirt on those pictures? I'm trying hard to spot them. Maybe the odd dodgy bit of vinyl.

What's the issue about the 'disconnection' between First Group and the trains it operates? Does the average passenger have a clue that GoAhead is the brains behind all manner of train and bus services across the UK - or care about it? Never mind that, as you say, First appears to be mentioned twice on the side of each coach... hardly that disconnected.

And what's all the ranting about Cornish in aid of? Does a tiny bit of writing that will presumably only be used on 20 coaches for the Night Riviera really offend you that much? Did you get this excited when BR started using 158s with cab destination displays showing place names in Welsh on journeys far into England back in the 1980s?

Painting the roofs of 166s white for years has done nothing for the temperature inside and they usually end up pretty grubby, especially above the cabs.

Plus all the 166s have been visiting Long Marston in recent months for yet more work on the air con. I've no idea what is involved, nor whether it will succeed, but they are still trying. I suppose if it doesn't then they may just opt to adopt the same air cooling kit as they plan to fit to the 165s, which I believe will be more akin to what is already used on Chiltern's 165s.

Using a Celtic language on the side of the trains , I guess, is aimed at tourism. It works well in Ireland, as well as Scotland and Wales, and many people are attracted by the romance and mystery of Celtic / Gaelic languages, including for example the Americans, who love all things Celtic...

Latest estimates are that about 2000 people have some working knowledge of Cornish. Which is nowodhow splann, if you ask me.

The point behind publicly displaying a language isn't to assuage those who already speak it, but to promote it to those who don't! It's obviously worked if we've discussed it here!

It's also about the Cornish national identity. Likewise all new Street names in Cornwall are bilingual.

If you mean the green HST then no it won't as it isn't in service yet, if you mean the partly green sleeper set then yes it will be down there on alternate days.

You are aware that is English with an accent right? There are 2 languages in Scotland. English and Scots Gaelic.

Not sure how you are getting 3 unless your taking the mick.

By your username you should know that Irish is the first language of the ROI. All government documents are Irish first, English second.

Its nothing to do with tourism.

Has anyone checked to see if the councils in Cornwall are part funding the sleeper to keep it going and a condition maybe to have Cornish branding?

Speaking of which, the two repainted HST PCs have made the journey back down to Laira today by road. Presumably they'll be receiving branding over the weekend and attached to the set before heading down to Paddington for Monday morning.

Are there enough green sleeper carriages for them to form a complete train for launch on Monday?

Presumably though a green Turbo will be at the launch too- would hardly be a stretch, if a full train is available, to have a green sleeper set with green locos there for photos

Actually the intention for Monday is to have both the green set Night Riviera, HST set and Green Turbos in Paddington station for the full launch.

Scots in not English with an Accent.
There was a question in the 2011 Census of Scots speakers.
The words used in Scots, where a lot of language comes from the Hanseatic areas, are not seen in English.

Well I am Scottish and I have never heard of it! I speak English with a Scottish accent.

The only thing close would be Ulster-Scots as spoken in parts of Northern Ireland.

But remember, people also put down Jedi as a religion in the census. Does not make it real!
