Care to elaborate how you can place more obstacles between a pantograph and people.
Maybe a train?

I rolled my eyes at the suggestion of a three car AC EMU being reduced to a two car EMU by removing the Pantograph coach.
Well, that's quite an embarrassing oversight on my part.
I'm guessing it would cost too much to be worthwhile to either move the pan, or take one of the driving coaches out and make one on the middle car 153 style.

Never mind. Electrification will bring you out of the dark ages up to the speeds enjoyed on the WCML and ECML for the past few years!![]()
Here is sunny Swansea we have the catenary masts in place for the depots etc as you leave the station you can view all the infrastructure , trouble is by the time they actually get the line electrified all this stuff will be in need of replacement , why spend all this money for no purpose ?
Is there a power supply to the wires? The depot wires will probably be used for checking out IEPs when they show up at Swansea, even if they get there on diesel.

A canopy with a deep valance would do this, as well as offering more protection from the rain than the modern style of canopy.
I think it is going to get quite a lot of work this weekend, I'd also expect a lot of other small jobs to get tackled too at the crossrail end.OK wires survey from my trip up to town yesterday.
Acton Main Line looks done apart from the dive under tracks.
Should be - depots have them so they can still move stock around/test electrical systems when the adjacent running lines have power off for engineering work, etc.
The energisation notice for Scours Lane to Milton sidings which was due to take effect on Saturday night has been withdrawn in the current weekly operating notice. The up main through Tilehurst Station has now been partly wired.
On the BBC Berkshire news they have just announced that the wires go live from Reading to Didcot tonight!
I think not as they are not finished, but maybe some are?

Paddington – yes the suburban platforms are wired, but P1/2 & their connections are not.
Crossrail has tracks down the ramp into the tunnel, but none through to OOC.
The North Pole depot access to Paddington in in use, I am not sure if powered up.
Acton Main Line looks done apart from the dive under tracks.
Stockley junction – 1 remaining spur is still under construction.
There are new masts & gantries in various locations replacing old head spans through to Stockley Junction, mostly around Acton & Stockley Junction.
The West Ealing bay is far from finished platform wise with just platform bases in, so no Greenford shuttle for ages.
Hayes & Harlington bay platform extension works seem to have stopped.
At West Drayton part of the branch has completed masts & fittings, I assume as a link so not to disrupt the main line if it is done later.
Stockley to Slough – all posts are up and most have the gantries & fixings attached. At 15 miles, there is a very short bit of wiring on the up relief.
At Slough, part of the Windsor branch has completed masts & fittings, I assume as the link so not to disrupt the main line when it is done later.
Slough - Maidenhead – there are a few missing masts and patchy masts complete with fixings.
From 21.5 miles to the east end of Taplow Station the Relief lines & up main are wired up.
There was previously a bit of wiring east of Maidenhead but I missed it!
The river Thames Bridge at Maidenhead and the station have no activity or work done
Maidenhead to Twyford – there are still missing piles and patchy masts, some with gantries.
Twyford to east of Reading – not a lot of work and just about half of the piles are in.
Reading station – no change for ages
Scours Lane – west
Down main = Scours Lane & west beyond Pangbourne wired
Up Main = Scours Lane & West beyond Pangbourne except the final lengths through Tilehusrt Station wired
Relief Lines = The Roebuck (Reading / West Berks boundary) west beyond Pangbourne wired.
I will keep an eye on the last gaps at Tilehurst and look west of Pangbourne later.

How is the wiring tested before being energized? Is a loco/unit towed under the catenary with its pan up or will that network rail train with the pantograph (think it was a converted HST) be used?
The NW scheme also had tests with a couple of Pendolinos making standing starts in opposite directions.
Virgin refused to sign off on it unless that happened.
Can Virgin really insist on this? Seems like Virgin telling NR what to do. Would other operators be offered so much?
Virgin/Alstom has special OHLE monitoring equipment on a couple of Pendolinos, used for data collection on the WCML.
This was to analyse issues about dewirements when it was not clear how it happened (ie caused by train or infrastructure).
Reputedly, they could tell NR more about the state of the OHLE than NR itself.
I don't think any other TOC can do that.
The 125/140mph capability of the GW wiring will also bring its own testing issues.
IEP and AT300 have a camera pointing at the pantograph. The driver can view the pan via the monitors in the cab if needed.
