Great British Railways - First Train in New Livery

This comes back to my whole beef with it. The government shouldn't have any role on the future branding of GBR. It should be up to GBR and its senior team when it gets up and running.

Imagine back in 1986 the Department of Transport telling Chris Green what the livery and branding for services in London and SE should be.
It would be lovely to have a railway with no influence from the government, but at the end of the day the railways eat up a sizable wad of cash every year. If the government was some say in how the railways are wrong I’d argue there isn’t much way anyone can say no, unless GBR can somehow remove the need for subsidy.

If all they want is to determine how the railway they pay for looks I think we should count ourselves lucky.

Southern 377s are currently getting a repaint. 3 cars are done and now the /1 series are getting it. But it seems like a quick going over with a roller (the paint seems textured.).. im sure selhurst cannot do full on spray paint jobs)

I wonder if these will soon get the GBR repaints or wraps.

I expect in a few years regional stuff will appear. Wasnt there a time when every loco was rail blue and all coaching stock was blue and grey until the PTE things started and those DMUs got white with a blue stripe.. late 70s?
There was. Inter-city just had that on the side of coaches. I would be happy to back to the old sector liveries. NSE was ok. Not sure if Anglia would have 3 liveries as a result however

Yeah. At the end of the day, i think it's just flag waving and triumphism rather than an actual identity brand. However, since the railways change so much every decade, they probably will apply a new livery within the next few years

My hope is that when GBR is established and gets going the whole brand issue will be revisited.

Even back in BR days plain rail blue with yellow ends was only applied universally for around 15 years before BR decided the image needed brightening up and Large Logo came into being.

That's true. Hopefully when GBR is up and running they can make changes and improvements going forward so yeah we might potentially see a sectorisation approach similar to 1982 on a modern level.

Reminds me living in Beverley and getting WY Metro Pacers and 158s on a regular basis. Regional colour schemes just make the network look messy. A bit like all the different TOCs. It looks like toy town railways at a busy station.
I saw the 114 at Lancaster (they weren't common there), and got my last TWPTE Class 143 at Windermere.

In time, will the Gatwick Express become an open operator like Lumo and Hull Trains?

Reason I ask is:

Gat Ex is currently part of Govia Thamslink/Southern but Gat Ex fares on Gatwick to Victoria route are more expensive then a regular Southern fare.

I know sometimes Gat Ex liveried stock operates other routes, with this I am speaking about Gat Ex's core route only.

GTW-VIC and VIC-GTW.

Could Gat Ex split from the pack and become an open access operator, still managed by Govia?

No because a) it is a DfT specified operation, b) GoVia no longer run it and c) it would very quickly fail the ORR's revenue abstraction test.

For marketing purposes it stands out to have the service branded separately, and it provides a specific function in going from Victoria to Gatwick non-stop so would seem to make sense to split this out.

Then again if you look at the Elizabeth line, while they don't have non-stopping services to Heathrow, you do get charged for a journey to Heathrow just like you get charged more for a ticket on Gatwick Express.

Too many open access operators however and you undermine the whole point of GBR which was to have a single organisation responsible for both track and train.

I think what will happen is Gatwick Express will be left as is and when GBR fully gets fully operational the need for some flexibility in livery and marketing will be developed. There's no reason why you can't have a 'Gatwick Express' branded GBR train which includes the GBR identity but also stands out as a distinct service.

I do believe the current livery is very much an interim and will be built out into something much more comprehensive. It's being done for political reasons to get the GBR name out there and give some visual evidence of railway nationalisation (which polls well with the public) but in reality we're 1.5 to 2 years away from GBR actually operating.

Probably not, because it will struggle to pass the 'not primarily abstractive' test.

GBR won't exist for another year, at best. Once it does exist, there'll be a lot to do, and many trains (357s, SWR 158s/159s, a few Electrostar classes, possibly some Chiltern stock, etc) and stations (EWR, Cambridge South, Euston, Waterloo, etc) that will have undergone, or started to undergo repaints and refurbs and new trains being delivered, like the LNER 897s. Why wait until a busy period of reorganisation to start designing? If they waited, they could end up not having a livery until 2028 - the design process is a lot more than just sketching something down! Additionally, from a government perspective, this is a key campaign promise. The general public is not as tuned into this as we are on here. People want to see something to know that they're doing something, which is why they're flashing it on all the new and refurbed stock - 'oh, my GBR train is so nice and has AC! Thanks, Keir' - or something like that.

Additionally, you assume that the people who designed this aren't planned to move to GBR when it gets set up - a number of DfT staff, as well as DFTO and NR staff are planned to move straight into GBR. I don't think that assumption is correct.

Lets not forget the "Inter City" blue and grey livery that started appearing on express stock from around the mid 1970s. In my area, the last batch of 4-VEPs on the Southern (7854-7894?) were outshopped new in this livery and I believe suburban EPBs started receiving it in the early 1980s.

I think you must have mixed me up with someone else because I can't get my head around how this relates to anything I said.

Sorry, I might've been a bit unclear. You said

in your original message. My response was to that, that the people who designed the branding could (and likely will) move into GBR when it's set up, making the point essentially moot as it's the same people. This was done internally at the DfT with some team members from DFTO. They'll transfer over to GBR, and so, it was (in a way) up to GBR. Also, a lot of GBR's starting senior team is probably already with DFTO, and they would've had to approve it.

Right, I now understand what you meant - thanks. However, I certainly don't agree with what you're saying at all.

The assumption that people will always make the same decisions irrespective of which organisation they work for is fundamentally flawed. DFTO is not Shadow GBR. It's an offshoot of the DfT, a holding company, set up to temporarily manage the state-owned operators. It seems clear to me thar the GBR livery has been a decision by government ministers. That it may be personnel in the DfT who happen to now be in DFTO who took direction to implement the brand is completely irrelevant to what those same people may be required to implement in the future should they end up working for GBR. Future GBR has yet to have a Chair and CEO appointed and they may very well take a very different view of branding. Whoever get the roles I'm sure their view will be that livery and branding is nothing to do with government ministers or civil servants.

I have it on good authority that the bold bit isn't true. The ministers may have given the brief to 'design a livery' but they did not determine the livery, and certainly didn't decide it (other than approval, I presume). It was an in house team of designers.

That may be true. That may not be true. We simply don't know yet, but even if they don't think the design work of GBR should have anything to do with civil servants, it has been. Not only do we have no good reason to assume they wouldn't do something similar, but even if they would, as I said above, we likely wouldn't start to see it until 2028. Hiring designers, getting them to start work, creating the finished products (since liveries have to be tweaked for every kind of unit or unit family), and starting to apply them would take a while. Getting started now just saves GBR some cost, and crucially, gives visibility to the public that GBR is actually happening.

And again you're claiming I said things which I didn't. I didn't say government ministers actually designed the livery. It was their decision to adopt a livery for GBR before GBR comes into being. Of course they issued the brief and approved it.

You're clutching at straws there.

We're obviously never going to agree on this issue, but I'm glad I'm far from alone with my opinion on this issue - and I don't mean among enthusiasts.

Let's leave it there.

We don't really have anything but straws to clutch at. But sure.

Now that the livery is going to start to be rolled out nationwide, seeing as some names will differ from existing operators (East Coast instead of LNER, Anglia instead of c2c), surely we’ll have to see the old logos/names starting to be removed soon enough?

Because it’s going to be very confusing to have some Azumas branded “LNER” and others branded “Great British Railways | East Coast”, for example.

It'll be very, very similar to a franchise change. The names will be stickered over very quickly (1st one or two nights) but with the livery taking a lot longer to repaint, so you'll have 'GBR | EC' stickered trains running around with the LNER colours underneath.

One of the drivers for doing it with a franchise change is there is a change of legal entity responsible for the service, with the new one wanting people to know who they are, and the old one wanting people to know they're not in charge any more. None of this is the case with a change from GBR Greater Anglia to GBR Anglia or the like.

As for confusion, it'll be no more confusing for passengers with some trains with one paint job and others with another than it is the NSE unit running around on South Eastern, or any of the multitude of special / promotional liveries carried by other stock.

That's always fun to look at. I do wonder when this will happen though, as people have suggested that the Azumas will start to be done this month (apparently?) but that would be a very quick change to happen so soon. Alternatively, why not Anglia? The 357s are undergoing repaints and this is a name change that's pretty needed across the Anglia region.

I know they aren’t everyone’s favourite company here, but LNER have established a strong brand image with the generic public. Surely that isn’t all going to be thrown in the bin so soon?

They’d have to stop their ‘distinctive’ advertising for a start, and we just be left with the advert for “the train” with the grand daughter and gran.

I’m still thinking they will go full GBR and then at some stage back track a bit back to different brands when they realise the railway is different things for different people. Your long distance LNER leisure customer is not the same as your south east weekday commuter.

Here's an "out there" thought: they could have a brand for long distance, one for south east commuters, and one for all other shorter distance routes.

They could be called "Intercity", "Network SouthEast" and "Regional Railways", each with their own livery and brand identity.

Oh wait.......

True, but they're not a million miles away from leisure customers using GWR, XC or AWC - do they really all need separate branding, mascots and marketing teams?

Theres every chance Heidi Alexander and Peter Hendy wont be at the DFT come the end of Summer if we get a change of PM so its all still quite fluid at the moment.

Not sure it matters that much.. i think its overstated, as with GWR. I doubt 'its an LNER train' is a fact in peoples decision to buy a rail ticket, (infact u could argue they are so uncomfortable it might work againat them).

GBR is the governments new toy, i really get the joined up way of thinking, its needed. Id be much more supportive of the Intercity brand returning.
