Hmm...an absolute howler tonight, describing the SS Great Britain as 'the first steam powered ship in the world', which is entirely wrong. 
I can't say I thought much of the editing around Bristol either - cutting from an image of the sign 'Bristol Temple Meads' to an information screen with the next train advertised as heading for Bristol... :roll:
Nice to see shots of the HST streaking through the countryside though. Looks a lot better (more 'trainish') than those silly two-carriage things he was travelling on last week!

You're absolutely correct with it looking more 'trainish' as the silly two carriage thing is not a train, merely a 'multiple unit'

Nobody has mentioned it yet, but surely I'm not the only person to have noticed that his trip from Settle to Garsdale started and ended with Leander as the motive power, but appeared to change to Scots Guardsman for part of it. Must have been a REALLY interesting 20 minutes. Easy mistake to make, of course ... if you ignore the addition of blinkers ... and the change of colour ...!
Also, has anyone else noticed the wonderful insincerity he frequently displays when trying food? His voice says how wonderful it is, but his facial expression is saying 'this is disgusting' on just about every occasion.
I hope the beeb doesn't waste any more of my licence tax on this obnoxious individual.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't this be the fine ship Turbinia? Now at Newcastle's Discovery Museum and also a pub on the Fossway.
Turbinia was the first ship to use steam turbines rather than reciprocal engines that had been used upto then, she wasn't the first steamship however.

Latest, and different, editing blunder on last night's episode. MP was boarding a train at Totnes to head west, but the HST 'arrived' in the up direction on the down platform line at Totnes with tail lights on the front !!!!

Yeah, I noticed the backwards HST! Today, it changed from an HST to 150 to Voyager interior, on supposedly the same train! But it was a great episode anyway.
Well I can understand that railway enthusiasts may be upset about the editing which is not the fault of Michael Portillo! but the comments about the trip to Settle to Garsdale, the majority of viewers are aware that the journey is broken, so it does not mean the same train may be used all the time, is it not possible that he may have caught the Leander for the final leg of the journey?
As regards the comment of insincerity I think this may reflect personal feelings of the poster, as hundreds on general TV forums have stated the exact opposite.
The programme has been widely received by TV viewers and highly praised, I have introduced some 12 friends/colleagues to the show, and they said initially put off watching it with the title, feeling it may be more for train "anoraks" perhaps Bradshaw Tour and Journeys by train may have been better, but once think is clear after watching it once they are glued! and all praise the superb way it is handled with sincerity by Micheal Portillo.
BBC lets have more of Michael and this type of programme!

How have you arrived at your opinion?
I consider he has presented the program very well and have enjoyed each one. Whoever came up with the idea and persuaded the BBC to finance it, thanks very much.

It's good,but it sometimes swings out of the railways. Other people may like this, but I think it's annoying.

Another good one today, on arrival at Truero, HST exterior, 153 interior showing inside of doorway, exterior of 150 pulling up, the interior of HST showing Portillo getting out.
To me this seems very confusing but I guess most people wont notice the discrepancies.
I wonder how much the total amount of money the BBC paid for his tickets!

Very little considering Talkback Thames made the series.
The trip from Settle to Garsdale was announced as a single 20 minute journey, so my comment stands.
Regarding his insincerity, when you take a bite of food, do you screw your face up if you think it's nice, because that is what Portaloo does on almost every occasion? I merely comment on what I see.
The scenery is invariably nice though.

The train spotter was being awkward and a treat though. Deserved it!
I loved it when he corrected him by saying train photographer not trainspotter, micheal did say some awkward things to the frieght enthusiast he was talking to.

Well, tonight takes the biscuit - just as we're supposed to be watching a train on Peak Rail, heading for Rowsley with an 0-6-0 'Austerity' saddle tank at the front, we get a shot of 'King Edward I'!
I wonder if some "train" viewers even relax watching the programme, many seem far too busy in finding fault if many of the thousands who are enjoying it could read some of the petty remarks they would be the ones to laugh.
It is not a programme concentrating on trains, it is Bradshaw's Reviews and find my any programme on TV or even in books that may not have some errors

But due to the title of the programme you gonna think its a program for enthusiasts so they could at least do some of the editing correctly. Isnt it easier to film one train rather than several different ones?

I - and the rest of us on here, I'm sure - can both enjoy myself and notice the errors in editing, you know.
Besides, it is 'Great British Railway Journeys' after all. And when he's talking about the beauty of the Peak District, it's perhaps a bit much to suddenly cut to an image of a train running through Devon, as the 'King' was (unless I'm very much mistaken!) last night.
