Nigel Harris from Rail Magazine tweeted a reminder about this earlier, it looks interesting. I think Michael Portillo did a show like this before but it was more European based, I only saw one episode, he travelled around Spain (his homeland), it was pretty good.

This is where iplayer comes in extremely handy although have managed to catch the first one and am watching it now.

Would I be annoyingly pedantic if I mentioned that he has just taken a journey, with the viewer expected to associate the aerial view with the train he is travelling on? Problem is, he was on a 156 and the aerial view was of a 142.

Thought its started at 7pm and switched over just before only to find the credits were just about to roll!

somehow I don't think that northern run 156s that magically transform into pacers on the move, but overall I was unimpressed by the program, mainly because it focuses more on what's along the route than the journey itself, which is rather strange because the title is "Great British Railway Journeys" not "whats near good railways"

Railway programmes are pretty specialised and this is on at peak time so naturally has to appeal to a fairly broad audience. It would have been nice to see more of the route but I found it entertaining.

It's a social and historic history as much as about the railway. How the railway's transformed society along the route, and things to see along the way. The 'Great railway journey' programme has always been the same - its designed to appeal to a wide audience as its already been pointed out.

I enjoyed it anyway!

Michael Palin's Railway Journeys were similar, it's a shame that there were only two.

Personally I'm not a fan of railway programs on mainstream TV, they are inevitably made for the general public rather then rail fans and are 'dumbed down' accordingly.

I'd rather go and see the railway in question myself, if the opportunity arose.

Was doing the same here, looking at all the continuity errors on it. Still I guess Joe Public doesn't notice.

I actually found Portillo to be quite funny, even if he wasn't trying to be. Stood out like a sore thumb. The best bit was when he was having the half pint and managed to spill some when he was taking a sip. Stupid bugger.

I wonder if they took a bribe from Northern for filming this? Theres a lot of helicopter footage of clean and shiny Northern 158s, and tonight they onlys showed the nice parts of Manchester Vic. Hmmm.

When he said he was going to Denton in last night's programme I was wondering how he would get back. Luckily for him he went to Fairfield instead...

The one at Pontefract should be good, just wondering which station it will be. Probably Monkhill if he's going to the liquorice factory.

how many trains Porto can travel on at the same time.

Saw the NECX cock-up at the end, but still when you still hear people referring to GNER and other out of date terms it doesn't surprise you.

I suppose its quite accurate now though, its Nationalised, and it runs East Coast Express trains!
