Why the poll...? Surely this is a no-brainer.

No, absolutely not under any circumstances whatsoever. It is a criminal act. End of.

O L Leigh

what he said.

anyone who ever proclaims that graffiti is in any way connected to art should be jailed for inciting criminal damage.

No. Never. Even in controlled environment, it looks ugly.

To be fair, there are some pretty good "Graffiti artists" about. Just google "Graffiti Art" for a few examples.

However, I do not condone defacing public or private property and I in no way at all agree this stuff should ever be on or near rolling stock.

If its not yours, don't damage it.

And don't hail Banksy, it just encourages others.

On a train...somewhere!
I totally agree.

The reason for the poll was to prove to certain individuals that they are wrong and to answer one of my long standing questions.

Absolutly not! Although some of the liveries we have on the railway today are little more than corporate graffiti, with tags like First, Stagecoach etc. :)

Although not in any way condoning it, given the amount of it about, I expect TOC's are now quite proficient at dealing with criminal damage and even have figures for negating it in their budgets.

The people who must surely be most affected are preservationists, normally working in their spare time on a shoestring budget. It must be quite devastating to turn up one day and find all all the hard work destroyed.

Tbh, i think yes, in special cases.

Some of the liveries are utter crap, there's no other way of describing it, and in my opinion, i think to even have a single MU that has graffiti art on it (not midless tagging, people who do that should be shot) would actually be kinda cool, but only if it's well done.
Especially having seen some of the stuff around edinburgh on my travels. For example, there's a bridge (i forget where) on the old railway line that's now a cycle track that is covered in it, and it looks a hell of a lot better than old bricks.

However, i accept that this will never actually happen, so it's really a moot point.
Also, I agree about the preservationalists, it must be a hell of a shock to find your work damaged.

I think some of it would look really good on the sides of trains... And it makes them less boring, and adds individuality as well

100% agreed with you and O L Leigh.

I can't stand graffiti. One of THE most pointless and horrible-looking ways to use paint ever.

If I had the opportunity, I'd bump these graffiti 'artists' onto some live pieces of 3rd rail...<D

Yes, I am evil...<D
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Now if that had been done in a more traditional way, like a proper piece of art, it probably would have looked great.

It looks funky as it is, I'll admit that, but I stand by my long-standing hatred of graffiti and say that there are better ways of doing such 'art'.

But then I'm not a fan of art anyway. One of THE most pointless ways of spending money (whether painting it, commissioning an exhibition of it or buying it) I've ever seen. I mean, if someone can throw a tin of paint at a canvas and it is declared to be art...

I'm fairly sure this topic has been done to death on another thread.

Yes, you are correct.

Happened when those idiots got run down at LU at Barkibg IIRC.

most people, as here, said serves them right, but there was a backlast from the bleeding heart liberals, plus a few of the poor souls (?:))
mates signed up on this, and other, forums to try and 'justify' their actions.

Train v tresspassing graffiti vandal = no contest. Real victim here was the poor train operator!

I have voted absolutely not, as to trespass, and then graffiti is the activity of a scumbag. Fair enough, if Eurostar want to advertise their 10th birthday with 'organised graffiti', they are playing the Devil's advocate, surely that will send the wrong messages to the nice people who live around Paris Nord, Le Landy or Temple Mills, where, in the case of the former, from looking at the amount of Graffiti on the approach to Gare du Nord, it seems to be a major issue.

I must admit though, from a railway preservation point of view, there are several cases where while trains have been stored for a long time in the open air, graffiti has effectively 'protected' the otherwise rust-vunerable bodywork. A classic case of this was with the famous 'Blackpool two', the pair of cl.101 centre cars, that were in surprisingly good nick, partly put down the the bodyside graffiti!!

This can work two ways, however. The sole surviving cl.304 unit, which was under the care of the ACLG became the victim of some Crewe scumbags, who not only graffitied the unit, but also smashed windows- which was the final nail in the coffin for the class, living up to their 'Dinosaur' nickname!

i think it should defently be allowed but under "controlled circumstances". As long as its not resist or anything that can affend anyone.

Its a good way to get messages over to young people and it will jazz trains up a bit. We advertise on trains don't we. Its really another form of advertising.

i would rather see a bit graffiti on a train with a cool effect message it than an advert for half price burgers at McDonalds or specsavers.

Powerfull messages about drugs, smoking, gang wars are often shown though music video's in should be broadcasted everywhere to get the message over to people. Also some of it looks really good aswell. Someone posted a link somewhere. Follow that link and see for yourself before droping another comment on here.

I'm not voting on this. People will express themselves, that is art.........
whether it be pictures, music, images, designs, etc.

The whole point of graffiti is to 'stick two fingers up at authority'!

The only 'message' it sends is I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR OTHER PEOPLES' PROPERTY.

By the way Specsavers do NOT sell burgers!

The last part was supposed to say or specsavers glasses advert, thanks for correcting.

I still think that if its used in the right way its a good way to get a message across. Some of it looks really good.

I think you're just not creatively minded. Art is a great thing.

As for graffiti, I hate taggers and all that. But I honestly quite like some of it.
I remember on one of the bridges getting towards Newcastle there was a piece of graffiti (removed now) that was really colourful and said "Welcome to the Toon!". I really liked that.
I don't care if TOX was here or whatever, but a nice, well thought out, positive piece of graffiti can quite easily brighten my day.

Sticker bombing (mainly on the Underground) also makes me smile. When you see the advertisement posters up the escalators on the tube, there's often a couple of really well placed and witty stickers. They just make me giggle. People definately need to smile more on the tube!

Thanks Gizmogle - i'm really glad someone actually agree's with me on that. And i remember that bit of graffiti on the bridge heading into Newcastle, i passed in loads of times and really made me feel happy to be home after being in London for the day where nobody talks.

Sparying something like the picture i posted in the other comment on the side of a train or on a station would defently living things up a bit. Be a lot nicer than looking at signs, No smoking, Mind the gap, Stand behind the yellow line etc.

I like it if its done well..but no,it sucks on trains..why do they try to make everything look like south central? You dont live there, silly boys,so dont try to make it look like you do..you never will, either!

However, there used to be a really good one on Shepreth TSC box(in between the track where you go KX or Liverpool St)but I think it was only visible from KX services..it was one of a girl in a leather coat

I'm some people are sort of being realising that it looks good sometimes if its done well. I think stations, trains need to be done up a bit. Makes things more intersting to look at.

The railway would defently be better if there was some graffiti are around to look at.

As for it being anti social, if it affends people then yes it is anti social. But some of it is art like and looks good.

No, never, and whats more the vile scumbags who practice graffiti should, when caught, be whipped until they squeal like the little runts they are. If you want to paint, then go and buy some canvas from an art shop, if you think you're hard and want to stick two fingers up at authority, then join the Army and then we'll see how hard you really are!

Its not about sticking two fingures up at people or one fingure come to that, no. Its about getting messages across to people, not stupid ones like "pasty waz ere in 2008 wif da crew". Serious ones like, Drugs kill, Gang warfare is wrong, but it needs a catchy little line in order to do that.

It also allows people to do really good, modern, artistic types of drawings of people. A bit of graffiti would brighten up all trains stations.

take a look at that for example or:
