Maybe if we dealt with it this harshley, it wouldn't be a problem on the railways?

Seems to me like an overreaction all round, by the School and by the girl and her family.

There again, Yorkie loves to follow ticketing rules to the letter, so I guess he finds this fine, as technically it is a crime.

I'd say the school was well within its right in calling the Police, though the Police definitely used disproportionate force in handcuffing the girl. I'm also surprised they didn't give her a caution for the first offence.

If the BBC article is anything to go by, I would disagree that the police should have been involved at all. All she did was scribble on a desk (using an erasable marker according to the Beeb). Now if she had been using a spray can to paint someone’s car or the side of a building then by all means call the police and arrest her, but for marking a desk with an erasable marker? We had incidents like that at my school and it never got anywhere near involving the police.

How many people can honestly say they didint scribble on their desk at least once during their school years?

To arrest someone for such an act is quite pathetic (whether the school was in the right to call the police or not is irrelevant imo). When I was at school if you did something like this and was caught you would get detention and be made to clean all the desks.

I agree it is a massive overreaction by everyone, but it does seem odd how they can sue over it.

These days kids just say "Oh my! I'm not getting done for that. Get my mate done 'cos he did it. I din't do it... Am I bovered? My Mum & Dad say I don't have to do detentions anyway so you can't keep me back." and they can't be made to clean desks either! Also "it's the cleaners job" to clear up.

Rather stereotypical of you there yorkie. Just because it's what some of us young people do, it doesn't mean all of us have done it, or did do it, or will do it, some of us are sensible.

Actually you wil find that the sort of kids who do vandalism, graffiti and other unsociable acts will quite often, generally react the way I described. Not always, but a lot would. I am surprised you include yourself (by the use of the word "us") in that, I wouldn't have thought you would be responsible for graffiti!

I would go so far as to say most of us are sensible. Well at least most of the time anyway

No, I think it's bang on the mark for 85% of the UK's current Yoofs (which is what Yorkie was on about, current Yoof). I am one of them and it is what happens. School is complete b0llocks when it comes to punishment. Teachers have very little control over pupils as there is no punishment that works! If you think detentions work to the chavs, you're wrong! Only kids with decency know how to behave even when there is nothing stopping them misbehaving. It doesn't help when your senior members of staff don't give a toss anyway.

Believe, it IS poor, very poor.

Indeed. It is the sort of reaction you'd generally get if you caught someone doing that. I base that on the sort of people who engage in such acts acting in that way, based on experience.

I'd say it's a lot less than "85%" that are like that though! (here at least, maybe more like 20%?). I could believe it may well be 85% in really bad schools though possibly. Again, it only takes a relatively small proportion to be responsible for quite a lot of incidents and it gives all young people a bad name. :|

I'm not responsible for graffiti, but I don't disagree with it, some of it is disgusting but there are a few examples that are extremely good and should be kept!

As in response 43034, schools are bad for punishment, even when I attended, my safety was completely let down by the tutors, but you cannot arrest someone for doodling on a desk it's just not right, this shows that schools are obviously not engaging with pupils, it happens all over the world in all types of school systems. Education is boring and teachers/tutors/lecturers are doing nothing to keep attention.

When pupils get bored, they get out their pens and they start drawing on anything they can find.

As for on public transport, it shows a sense of "ownership", with the 'TOX' branding's coming to mind, everyone knew how daring he was to get his name around on the land he "owned", thus showed him respect.

It comes from the branding's done by American gangs.

Okay, I read this page first before the last few posts on page 1, and saw this quote-

I have more respect for any random single celled organism than I do for him.

Immediately I thought it seemed a bit harsh, whoever Yorkie was talking about.

However, when I saw this...

the 'TOX' branding's coming to mind, everyone knew how daring he was to get his name around on the land he "owned", thus showed him respect.

I entirely concur with Yorkie.

TOX (and his followers) aren't daring, they're (insert curse) idiots. Anyone who respects him for his so called 'work" are the same.

TOX is far from being one person, it's juse been picked up by others and used everywhere.

Some graffiti I don't mind, as some of it is pretty good, but tagging is just stupid, and I have no respect whatsoever for those who do it. Especially because of some of the frankly idiotic things they'll do just to get to certain places. (Remember the kid who died in Glasgow when he fell trying to graffiti a railway bridge?)

No I don't and that is the way it should be in my opinion :|

I remember reading about some incident where a lad died and the family tried to sue the railway for not providing a good enough fence. Perhaps they should sue the Highways Agency for not fencing off all roads adequately? I'm not sure if that was the same incident or not, but people with that attitude clearly have issues.

With every new road scheme / minor alteration (eg new junction), a safety study is performed. If Engineers fail to identify points where safety fencing should be provided (eg major junctions) or the council / HA disregard the identification of sites where fencing should strongly be considered, the respective parties would easily be liable in court.
