GPS question

I noticed a lot of enthusiasts used GPS and I've wanted one for sometime how can I get a GPS on my computer? and how much (if a price)

I don't think you can get it on a laptop (maybe wrong), but you can definitely get it on a mobile phone, I've got it on my N900, quite good it is too.

I have a phone that does GPS, I don't need the laptop at all, but if you want to get GPS on your laptop, you have the right sort of phone and you have software that can accept a GPS signal then you need something to transfer the signal from the phone to the laptop.

GpsGate Windows + PocketPC US$49. So about £30ish?

That gives you the license for a PocketPC and a Windows computer. (you need both).

You'd need a phone that runs Windows Mobile, and has a built-in GPS to take advantage of it.

Other software may be available for other operating systems (e.g. Linux based phones such as Google Android), but I don't know the details.

Get yourself an iPhone 3GS - built in GPS plus plenty of speed apps.

btw: you do know there are docs that have linespeeds out there on the web somwhere? I want to say networkrail.co.uk has them somewhere.

You can buy bluetooth GPS thingies for about £30 - £40 off Amazon if you havnt got a GPS phone. If you stick your GPS in the window you can see Yourself fly along in Google Earth.

Most Android phones have GPS, can also use MyTracks to log speed/elevation for exporting.

I simply used a TomTom Go950.

I couldn't get a reception in a Pendo but it was fine on an ICE3 - 199mph top speed, sweet.

Ever since the successful trip on the ICE, I have been unable to use any other GPS device on a train. I think the body shell interferes with the signal as well as the OLE.

All smart phones have GPS, lots of non-smart top end phones have GPS, but the chips in them are of debatable quality and so are not always guaranteed to give you the results you want in specific circumstances.

Depends on what you expect from a GPS. I own one for my other interest (Geocaching) and a simple unit like a Garmin Etrex 'H' is ideal for my needs. You can get one of these for about £70 and it maintains satellite signas in deep woods and even ravines! So great for railway cuttings but not so good for tunnels. If its to be used for a specific purpose associated with the rail system, then I think you may need something specialised.

On the subject of GPS, is there any way you could set one up so for example if you were on a motorway as you approach a junction it would give an AWS chime to continue but a horn to leave?

This is the best deal I have seen for a Bluetooth GPS receiver, remember though you will need some software as well.

I'm lost wiothout my Garmin Oregon that got stolen :cry: at least it has sttoped me from comming home looking like I have been up to things in bushes

I think my bluetooth one is a Bluenext thing that cost me about £30, nothing special but it works but not as accrete as a Garmin

If you have a TomTom there is plenty of software available that allows you to log the raw GPS data.

I use one which takes samples in 1 second intervals. I've yet to use it on a train though.
